Half is good, the other half is GREATBy Kid KyotoCase Files 5 begins with some standard Judge Dredd fare, a series of stories introducing the bizarre crimes of Mega City One such as Body Sharking where loan sharks freeze a borrower's relatives as collateral. These stories are fun but nothing special. But then things get very good. First we get a return engagement for Judge Death drawn by Brian Bolland. And then after a few more filler stories we get into the one-two punch of Block Mania and Apocalypse War.Block Mania starts lightly, in the overcrowded towers of Mega City One even a dropped ice cream cone can set off a shooting war. But it grows more serious as Block Mania spreads across the city. Then, with the city in chaos, Mega City's communist rival East Meg launches a war.Apocalypse War is a deadly serious and very dark story. Cities are nuked, civilians die of radiation sickness, collaborators are shot and the death count is in the ten digits! It's an abrupt change of pace but it works, thanks in a large part to the great art from Dredd's co-creator Carlos Ezquerra. It's the best of the early Dredd epics and holds up well today. For $20 you get a collection of good to great Dredd stories, it's a hard deal to top.11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Great starter for Dredd newcomersBy NZIf you are wondering where to start for Judge Dredd, this is probably the one of the best collection of stories. The first quarter or so of stories is a good example of the "standalone" or quick stories that Dredd has a lot of. They are pretty good- but the action really starts with "Block Mania" and "Apocalypse War" story arcs, which essentially act as one long storyline. The action is quick and the dialogue crisp, a real page turner once you get to this part of the book. The book itself is a fairly decent paperback. It holds together well and the paper, while not the best quality, is reasonable for the amount you pay for this book. The art is all in the original black and white that Dredd was published in back in those days, so if that's a turn off for you for what ever reason, keep that in mind. At the price is offering for this collection, it's a real steal.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The first half of the book is very good. The art is beautifulBy H. TuThis is apparently where Judge Dredd Newbies should start because this is what you expect from Judge Dredd in the Movies. The first half of the book is very good. The art is beautiful, and the stories are small little 'case files' that tell you about Mega City One. However, the book becomes 'ridiculous' when you get to the Apocalypse story arc. It's a bit much, and veers heavily away from what you have been reading so far if you started at Vol 05 like I did. In addition, the art changes dramatically for the worst. Anyways it's certainly worth the purchase to get introduced to Judge Dredd, but it's not flawless. 4/5.

THE LAW AT WAR!Judge Dredd rides into action in this fifth volume collecting together some of his most exciting cases. Arch-nemesis Judge Death rises from the grave once again in 'Judge Death Lives', citizen is pitted against citizen in 'Block Mania' and the apocalypse comes to Mega-City One in the all-time classic Dredd epic, 'The Apocalypse War'.Featuring art by such comic legends as Carlos Ezquerra (), Brian Bolland (: The Killing Joke) and Mike McMahon (The Last American) and written by John Wagner (A History of Violence) and Alan Grant (Lobo) this tome is a worthy addition to any Thrill-seeker's library!

About the AuthorJohn Wagner is, to many fans, the very heart of 2000 AD. Involved from the earliest days of the “Galaxy's Greatest Comic”, he co-created Judge Dredd, as well as a host of other series, including the critically- acclaimed Button Man. Incredibly prolific throughout his career, and writing under a diversity of pen names—often in concert with Alan Grant, with whom he devised and developed 2000 AD's sister comic, the Judge Dredd Megazine—Wagner has worked extensively beyond 2000 AD, originating, writing many American standards, including Batman, The Punisher, Lobo, and Star Wars bounty hunter Boba Fett. His graphic novel A History of Violence was made into a hit film. With over 300 2000 AD stories to his name Alan Grant’s prolific creative record speaks for itself. Grant is well-known to Batman fans following a lengthy run on various incarnations of the title. More recently he has adapted Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novels Kidnapped and his television work includes scripts for the BBC.
