A series of rambunctious Rheingold ads left Mayor Michael Bloomberg publicly bristling in April. The campaign, called “Take Back New York,” mocks controversial ordinances like the indoor smoking ban and the prohibition on dancing in bars without cabaret licenses. In April, Bloomberg, responding to the Rheingold attack ads, told an Associated Press reporter that Rheingold “walked out on the city 20 years ago,” and fired about 4,000 workers “almost overnight.” Several times Wednesday, Bendheim disassociated his company from the one that left Brooklyn. He noted that a “large, non-brewery corporation” bought Rheingold from the Liebmans in 1963 and they were the ones who shut it down 13 years later. As for the recent ads, he said he is “not looking to be a protestor,” but to give his customers a voice. Markowitz was more direct. “I got to tell you, we’re not some straight-laced folk here,” the borough president chimed in. “We say fughedaboudit.” One Brooklyn brewer was happy to hear he has a new neighbor. “I think it’s great,” said Steve Hindy, president of Brooklyn Brewery, a Williamsburg-based regional brewer. “The more of us out there promoting local beer, the better.” Which is to say that New York is a tough beer market to enter. In Brooklyn Brewery’s 16 years, Hindy said at least 10 start-ups, like the Park Slope Brewery, have tried and died. “They’ve revived a great old name in New York brewing,” Hindy said of Rheingold. “But they’re still facing, as we do, very tough competitors.” Those competitors include the same ones that knocked out Rhein- gold the first time. And there are new powerhouses like Interbrew, the Belgian company that imports Stella Artois. Hindy’s advice to Rheingold? “Unrelenting hard work.” “WHAT?” If this is your first response ... you’re not alone. This is how approximately 28 million Americans who experience hearing loss respond.
