New members of the institute are Michel M. Ter-Pogossian, Ph.D., and Samuel A. Wells Jr., M.D. Ter- Pogossian is professor of radiology at the School of Medicine and director of radiation sciences for Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology. Wells is Bixby Professor and chairman of the De- partment of Surgery at the medical school. He is also chief of surgery at Barnes and Children's Hospitals in the Washington University Medical Center. The two are among 40 new members elected to the institute in recognition of their contributions to health and medicine or related fields. As members of the institute, which was established in 1970, Wells and Ter-Pogossian will help examine health policy issues and advise the federal government. -

Romare Bearden
Let’s Create A Collage An abstract mixed-media project inspired by the work of Romare Bearden What is COLLAGE and DÉCHIRAGE? Collage is a technique where a piece of art is created by assemblying different images and shapes and adding them in layers to a piece of paper, canvas, or object. A collage might include images or headlines from a magazine or news- paper, photos, color papers, fabric, items found in nature, and/or other objects. Déchirage, which means “to tear” in French, is an artistic style that distresses paper to create a 3D patchwork. Déchirage is a form of décollage (which is the opposite of collage) because the art is created by cutting, tearing away, or otherwise removing pieces of the original image. Although Bearden was a remarkably fair-skinned black American, he was also what Albert Murray had called an Omni-American--part frontiersman, part Cherokee, part Southerner, part urbane Harlemite, and part blues-idiom hero. Right now, it is almost impossible to go into a bookstore and not come across a book with Romare Bearden’s art on its cover. We make two assumptions when encountering this phenomenon: that the contents of the book have something to do with the “black experience”: and that the publisher wants to be absolutely sure we know this. These assumptions expose an underlying problem in the literature on Bearden: the common reduction of his work to just a record of the black experience. -
Download Audience Attitudes About Engaging with Pittsburgh's Arts Sector During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic
A MESSAGE FROM Mitch Swain, CEO When the coronavirus pandemic first shuttered the arts and culture industry, the primary question that lingered in the minds of arts leaders was how to safely reopen as soon as possible. This question quickly became our guiding light as we stumbled through the pandemic. That’s why the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council joined WolfBrown to implement its COVID-19 Audience Outlook Monitor in Pittsburgh to illuminate exactly how we can safely welcome audiences back to museums, performances, art camps, and maker workshops. Since September 2020, our Pittsburgh cohort of organizations sent the Audience Outlook Monitor survey to their constituents to track opinions, attitudes, and expectations for safe reopening and COVID-19. We quickly found that arts audiences trusted area arts organizations for safety and healthy updates more than the government. What’s more – audiences were ready to come back to our facilities when it was safe to do so at higher rates than before the pandemic. I hope our community takes comfort in these findings and finds them useful in their own reopening protocols, despite the turmoil that we have all experienced in the last year and a half. Despite the isolation and uncertainty that came with the pandemic, this survey project allowed our sector to operate outside our normal silos and collaborate to find joint solutions to issues we were all facing. -

Students studying visual arts at Chatham choose between two concentrations: In the studio arts concentration, students are introduced to fundamental hands-on skills, processes, theory, history, and culture from foundation classes to contemporary visual theory and advanced studio practices such as ceramics, sculpture, painting, drawing, and printmaking. The art history concentration immerses students in trends and traditions of major art movements across the globe. Students analyze a wide range of art forms, from painting, sculpture, and architecture to photography, film, video, and electronic media, always grounded in its historical, theoretical, and cultural contexts. WHAT DO GRADUATES GO ON TO DO? Graduates of our studio arts concentration possess skills, foundations, and theoretical direction to navigate the creative industry in pursuit of such jobs as master printer, art handler, curator, museum professional, art registrar, art critic, or entrepreneur. Additionally, students within the studio arts concentration are prepared for graduate programs, artist residencies, and exhibition opportunities. Chatham students have entered competitive graduate programs in art history, museum studies, and arts management, and worked as curators, educators, and in institutional advancement for internationally-recognized museums. Others have launched careers directly after graduating as curators and grant writers, managers for artists’ studios, or founders of community-oriented art organizations. Visual Arts Our visual arts program combines the advantages of a small school with the perks of being in a city with a vibrant arts scene, including traditional museums and experimental spaces. By majoring in visual arts, you will enjoy working in small, intimate classes with a dynamic faculty that is well recognized in the local, national, and international community, learning how to care for, research, critically analyze, and create works of art.
