Johnny Cash Returns to ‘Stamping Ovation’ Legendary Singer is Second Inductee into Multi-Year Music Icons Series NASHVILLE — John Carter Cash, Rosanne Cash, Larry Gatlin, Jamey Johnson, The Oak Ridge Boys, The Roys, Marty Stuart, Randy Travis and other entertainers paid tribute to Johnny Cash as he was inducted today into the Postal Service’s Music Icons Forever stamp series at the Grand Ole Opry’s Ryman Auditorium. “With his gravelly baritone and spare percussive guitar, Johnny Cash had a distinctive musical sound — a blend of country, rock ’n’ roll and folk — that he used to explore issues that many other popular musicians of his generation wouldn’t touch,” said U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors member Dennis Toner. “His songs tackled sin and redemption, good and evil, selfishness, loneliness, temptation, love, loss and death. And Johnny explored these themes with a stark realism that was very different from other popular music of that time.” “It is an amazing blessing that my father, Johnny Cash be honored with this stamp. Dad was a hardworking man, a man of dignity. As much as anything else he was a proud American, always supporting his family, fans and country. I can think of no better way to pay due respect to his legacy than through the release of this stamp,” said singer-songwriter, producer John Carter Cash, Johnny Cash’s son.

  • 1987 a Gift of Music Kennedy Center Honors
Alexandria Harmonizers 70th Anniversary Throwback Thursdays No. 21 – 1987 A Gift of Music Kennedy Center Honors Gala Performances In the year following our first international championship, we received many invitations to perform on shows around the area. This was a welcome surprise for the chapter and we would realize only later that it represented a predictable trend associated directly with that singular contest achievement. In late 1987 the Harmonizers were invited to participate in the Kennedy Center Honors Gala by Ray Charles, the Director of the Ray Charles Singers (not the soul singer), who was responsible for the vocal music used during the gala. Charles felt it would be appropriate to feature barbershop harmony in a tribute to Perry Como who was once a barber and had sung in a barbershop quartet. The plan developed for us to sing a pure barbershop song, “When You Were Sweet Sixteen,” and excerpts from several Como songs. We recorded the music on Friday for we would “lip-sync” during the performance. Walter Cronkite introduced us as the “Alexandria Harmonizers, Champion Barbershop Singers.” At this point, only Vaudeville appeared, after which large vertical panels behind them started moving, revealing one part of the chorus after another. As the final panel moved away, disclosing all 100 men, Nancy Reagan reportedly leaned forward with a big smile and said “Wow!” There were admiring comments as we went off stage: Rosemary Clooney: “I loved your sound”; Jimmy Stewart: “That was really great!”; Lucille Ball: “I adore your sound”; Angela Lansbury: “That was sensational! You really got ‘em.” At show’s end, the Harmonizers came singing down the aisles and joined the dramatic finale.

Unsung Hero: “Blue Lou” Marini Saxophones, Flutes, Clarinet, Arranger, Composer, Educator, Producer “Lou has a lot to say, and all should listen.” ! —Bob Hensley, L.A. review Often referred to as an “unsung jazz hero,” platinum recording artist, Lou Marini, Jr. is the seasoned soul and adept multi-instrumentalist, arranger, composer, educator, and producer credited with inspiring the origins of a fan-following cult across multiple genres of music. Making a name for himself as a sideman in various high profile groups, any top New York jazz musician will tell you heʼs “one of the absolute best jazz musicians.” The New York based Marini is famed for his chameleon-like adaptability to imagine and perform inventive ideas in jazz, rock, blues and classical music. Describing Louʼs performances, the New York Times said, “(heʼs) the focal point of the group… (who) gives the band most of its colors and shadings, and provides it with a strongly melodic lead voice.” Five time Grammy Award winning arranger / composer Bob Belden had this to say about one of the time-honored contributions from Lou Marini, Jr., “This composition and arrangement reflects Louʼs ability to create exciting, new music that embraces rock and the most advanced ideas of jazz music.” The statement helps illustrate Mariniʼs ability to inspire and traverse multiple music disciplines. Highly Sought Sideman Popular since the early 1970s, Lou Marini, Jr. continues to be one of the most sought-after sidemen and session musicians on the New York scene. Due in part to his incredible skill and talent of the highest calibre, Marini masters many styles and instruments.

Administration of Barack H. Obama, 2009 Remarks at the Kennedy Center Honors Reception December 6, 2009 The President. Thank you. On behalf of Michelle and myself, welcome to the White House. Child in audience. Thank you. The President. Thank you. [Laughter] This is a season of joy, tradition, and celebration. Child in audience. Yay! The President. Yes! [Laughter] And today it is our great joy to continue a White House holiday tradition, a celebration of performers who have transformed the arts in America, our extraordinary Kennedy Center Honorees. We are joined by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Members of Congress, and members of the Kennedy family. I see sprinkled through the crowd some pretty fancy company as well. You've got the Queen of Soul; you've got Martin Scorsese, he knows a little bit about filmmaking; and my spectacular First Lady is here as well. I especially want to thank the man who created these honors more than three decades ago and who has produced them ever since—and whom I was proud to name as cochair of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities—George Stevens, Jr.—George. And I want to also thank Stephen Schwarzman and the Kennedy Center trustees, as well as President Michael Kaiser and all those who sustain President Kennedy's vision of a "great stage" celebrating "the best coming from this country and abroad." These performers are indeed the best. They are also living reminders of a simple truth— and I'm going to steal a line from Michelle here—the arts are not somehow apart from our national life, the arts are at the heart of our national life.
