Some of that work is being done here in Southwest Virginia, thanks to a connection with Dolly: Virginia Tech had a stake in the entity that cloned her. While the company that cloned Dolly no longer exists, in the years since she was cloned, related research has continued in our area, with the Blacksburg-based company Revivicor, which spun off from the company that created Dolly, developing tech- nology for cloning and genetically modifying pigs. During my visit to the farm where the genetically- modified cloned pigs are kept, which is located in the Ninth District, I saw that the pigs do not look different from any other pig. They are treated well, almost like pets. Unlike normal pigs, however, they potentially hold new advances in biological engineering for health purposes. For example, they potentially offer a new source for organs that can be transplanted to the people in need of them. These special pigs' organs have similarities to ours that could make them suitable for transplanting, providing a new source of organs for people waiting on them. People with diabetes may also stand to benefit from this research, as certain cells from these genetically- modified pigs could be transplanted into a human pan- creas to increase insulin production for those who need it. Cloning genetically-modified pigs offer more than just a new source of organs for transplant. Scientists are working on ways to use cloned pigs to help people overcome particular food allergies. The alpha-gal allergy has become more prevalent in the southeastern United States in recent years; one estimate suggests that up to 30 percent of people in the region have it. It is spread by Lone Star tick bites, which introduce alpha-gal molecules into the body. Who's going to win it? There have been some really super games, the Final Eight games were a basketball fan's delight. Who's the best? Don't know. I will take UVa and Michigan State to play in the final, but a roll is a roll, and Texas Tech and Auburn are playing off the charts. Take nothing for granted. Now pick a winner. I don't know that I can. Virginia is smooth, a veteran, polished team. Michigan State is slam bam, in your face, physical and tough. I honestly don't know, but we should root for the home state.

Cannoy's Words: I have yet to meet Tyler Cannoy, Pulaski County's new boys head basketball coach, but I look forward to it. I am already impressed. I've researched him a bit, and one simple statement he makes on his website really does impress me. "You will never be who you want to be if you keep blaming everyone else for who you are now. Quit Talking.'' In other words, shut up, go to work, and get better! I like it. I like it a lot.

Holter's Words: It was a surprise last week when Salem head coach Steve Magenbauer retired. His replace- ment is Don Holter. I do not know him personally either, but I also like his words. When asked what he felt his job was by a Roanoke Times reporter, he responded this way. Following Magenbauer is going to be diffi- cult and you can tell he knows it. The NCAA held a teleconfer- ence Monday afternoon on which the head coaches of Final Four team -- Bennett, Auburn's Bruce Pearl, Michigan State's Tom Izzo and Texas Tech's Chris Beard - Latest VEC Job Openings each had a 20-minute segment. Of the four, only Izzo has been to the Final Four as a head coach. Bennett, however, was a volun- teer manager on the Wisconsin team that reached the Final Four in 2000. The Badgers' head coach that season, of course, was his father, Dick Bennett, who remains revered in the profes- sion. Two father-son combinations have guided teams to the Final Four: the Bennetts, at Wisconsin and UVA; and John Thompson and John Thompson III, each of whom did so at Georgetown. A former head coach at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Pearl said Monday that "one of the very first videotapes I ever bought was [one on] Dick Bennett's man-to-man defense, and believe it or not, it was about pressuring the ball at the nine or putting in the box, keeping it in the box, sending everything to the baseline. "And then many years later, he completely turned that around and created the Pack Line defense, sending it middle, get- ting into gaps, not extending catches quite as much. It was a complete and total reversal. I adopted his first tape, and in many ways still keep some of those same principles. I would say Dick Bennett taught me, through clinics and tapes, a lot of how we try to guard even still to this day." This is the Cavaliers' 10th sea- son under Tony Bennett, and his program has become synony- mous with the Pack Line. Virginia has allowed an average of 55.4 points per game this sea- son. In Auburn, the 'Hoos will face an opponent that, led by guards Bryce Brown and Jared Harper, averages 80.2 points per game. "We don't see the Pack Line as much in the SEC as they do in the ACC," Pearl said, "so I know it will be a real challenge for us. Sometimes we play against teams that do a lot of switching, take away the 3-ball, and you've just got to find other ways to be able to score." In the NCAA tournament, Michigan State has been a neme- sis for the Cavaliers, beating them in the Sweet Sixteen in 2014 and in the second round a year later. Izzo said Monday that he's delighted about Virginia's success this postseason. "I don't know if you cheer for people -- I guess you do in cer- tain ways -- but Tony's been one Page B6 - The Patriot - Friday, April 5, 2019 Pulaski Elementary PTO sponsors science fair

By LINDA WILLIAMS The Patriot Valley Harvest Ministries in Dublin has been making chocolate Easter eggs for 22 years. "We started in a member of our administrative staff's kitchen with 3 people, but this year 65 church members and staff were here to make eggs in the church kitchen," said Shelia Willis, administrator at VHM. "Many of our members take vacation days from work to make these eggs," added Willis. VHM made, dipped, decorated and wrapped 5,234 eggs this year. It takes approximately two days in the kitchen to make the eggs from start to finish. There were 130 (2.4 lb.) jars of peanut butter and 130 (8 lbs. bags) of sugar used in making the eggs. Proceeds from the Easter Egg Sale will go to various ministries in the church and helps support community outreach programs throughout the year. If you would like to purchase one or more eggs the cost is $2.50 each. They are available in many Dublin and Pulaski businesses. If business- es are sold out, just call the VHM church office at 674-4728. They will be glad to help you.
