Wrap U P in Culture N I P U CULTURE WRAP FRI 20 SEP CULTURENIGHT.IE KILDARE 2019 This year Culture Night Kildare celebrates its 10th anniversary! It’s a great achievement for Kildare County Council and above all for the groups, venues, artists and organisations that have contributed, through the last decade, to make Culture Night an annual opportunity to explore the rich cultural resources in our county. Since the beginning, local communities have been the heart and soul of Kildare Culture Night and we would like to celebrate this through three very special, community projects to get you ready for a night of wonder, fun and discoveries. Our Local Ambassador, Margaret Becker, has been immersed in the arts scene in Kildare for many years, as stained - glass artist and printmaker and founder of the Leinster Printmaking Studio in Clane in 1998. On Friday 20th September she invites you to celebrate culture; with over 70 FREE events to Wrap You Up In Culture! SPECIAL COMMUNITY PROJECTS In Ardclough Village a number of local groups will come WELCOME together in the weeks prior to Culture Night to develop a showcase of the talents and skills the village has to offer. Facilitated and supported by Ardclough Community Council, Ardclough Drama Group, Ardclough Youth Theatre, Ardclough GAA Club and St. Annes Choir will create a window display and an after mass “pop up” performance that will introduce you to The Culture Night programme. Culture Night Photo Booth. Realised by members of McAuley Place and artist Cathy O’Brien in the weeks prior to Culture Night, a special Photo Booth will travel from venue to venue on the night, to get you in the picture and make you part of this fantastic night. With ceramic as the primary medium, artist Marta Golubowska and members of Irish Wheelchair Association Athy will promote inclusiveness and equality through art. The exhibition displayed in Athy Library for Culture Night will give you a glimpse of what you can expect on the night. CLOCHA RINCE KILCOCK EVENT LOCATIONS 1. CLOCHA RINCE 5 2. KILCOCK 5 3. • Portfolio of Straffan
Straffan Portfolio ENTENTE FLORALE 2016 Straffan Straffan village is situated in north east Kildare at a particularly low lying point of the Liffey Valley, along the River Liffey and river Morrell. The village name is the anglicised form of the original Irish, Teach Srafáin, which translates as “Church of St. Srafán”, a saint of the early Irish church who resided in the area at the end of the 7th century. The second Irish name of the town, Cluaníní, means “little meadows.” The current form of the village is linked to the Anglo-Norman invasion of the 12th century. Norman leader, Strongbow, granted Straffan to Maurice Fitzgerald, ancestor of the Earls of Desmond and of Kildare. A fortress and stronghold was built in conjunction with the granting of land, as was common practice at the time. Today, Straffan village has a population of over 600 people, with an additional 1700 inhabitants living in the surrounding hinterland. Only 30km from Dublin, Straffan is situated close to the larger towns of Celbridge, Maynooth, Clane and Naas. On the roads entering Straffan you are met with hedgerows, tree lined corridors or stone walls before arriving in a beautifully maintained, village, centred on a pair of crossroads, on which are situated Roman Catholic and Church of Ireland churches. 13th century Barberstown Castle and The K Club, on the grounds of Straffan estate are two luxury accommodation options in the village with historical significance. In recent years, the K Club has also become synonymous with golf in Ireland, hosting the 2006 Ryder Cup, the European Open from 1991 – 2007 and the Irish Open in May 2016.

  • Arthur's Way Heritage Trail
HERITAGE TRAIL Arthur’s Way is a heritage trail across northeast County Kildare that follows in the footsteps of Arthur Guinness. In just 16 km, it links many of the historic sites associated with Ireland’s most famous brewers – the Guinness family. Visitors are invited to explore Celbridge - where Arthur spent his childhood, Leixlip - the site of his first brewery and Oughterard graveyard - Arthur’s final resting place near his ancestral home. The trail rises gently from the confluence of the Liffey and Rye rivers at Leixlip to the Palladian Castletown House estate and onto Celbridge. It then departs the Liffey Valley to join the Grand Canal at Hazelhatch. The grassy towpaths guide visitors past beautiful flora and fauna and the enchanting Lyons Estate. At Ardclough, the route finally turns for Oughterard which offers spectacular views over Kildare, Dublin and the Province of Leinster. R o yaal l C a MAAYNOOTHYNOOTH nnala l R .
