The trial and the events surrounding it are seen through the eyes of Finch's six-year-old daughter Scout. While Robinson's trial gives the film its momentum, Scout's ever-strengthening bond with older brother Jem, her friendship with precocious young Dill Harris, the life lessons she learns from her father in response to such life-and-death crises as a rampaging mad dog, and especially Scout's reactions to, and relationship with, Boo Radley (Robert Duvall in his movie debut), the recluse who turns out to be her salvation when she is attacked by a venomous bigot. Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews in her screen debut) answers the children's ad by floating down from the sky, held aloft by an umbrella. She immediately endears herself to the children. Then Mary Poppins, the children, and Mary’s chimney sweep friend Burt (Dick Van Dyke) go on fabulous adventures together. Mr. Banks is pleased that his children are behaving better, but he's not happy with their fantastic stories. When he endeavors to teach his children about the real world by taking them to the bank, a series of disasters ensues, culminating in the loss of his job. Of course, Mary Poppins uses her magic and charm to make everything right in the end. August 15 Back to the Future 2, Rated PG; 108 minutes; 1989 In this sequel to the exciting original Back to the Future film, the crazy inventor Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) whisks Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and his girlfriend off to the future year of 2015 to prevent a series of events that would ruin the McFly name for posterity. The group foils the bullies of the future, but when they go back to their own time the old bully Biff steals a sports almanac that Marty brought with him from the future and bets his way to power. This begins a time-traveling swirl to make the head spin. Marty must pull the pieces of events back together as he jumps between three generations of intertwined time travel. August 22 The Lego Movie, Rated PG; 101 minutes; 2014 After a case of mistaken identity, a lowly Lego figure (Chris Pratt) joins a group of heroes intent on battling an evil force. Will Arnett co-stars as the voice of Batman in this fun and adventurous Warner Bros. picture that the whole family can enjoy. Elizabeth Banks, Morgan Freeman, Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, and Alison Brie head up the rest of the voice cast. .

(August 2012) Evleen Michelle Nasir, B.A., Texas A&M University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Kirsten Pullen There is a discursive formation of incapability that surrounds senior women’s sexuality. Senior women are incapable of reproduction, mastering their bodies, or arousing sexual desire in themselves or others. The senior actresses’ I explore in the case studies below insert their performances of self and their everyday lives into the large and complicated discourse of sex, producing a counter-narrative to sexually inactive senior women. Their performances actively embody their sexuality outside the frame of a character. This thesis examines how senior actresses’ performances of sexuality extend a discourse of sexuality imposed on older woman by mass media. These women are the public face of senior women’s sexual agency.

Fey's reputation as a feminist—indeed, as Hollywood's Token Feminist, as some journalists have wryly pointed out—heavily inflects the character she plays, the "bossy" Liz Lemon, whose idealistic feminism is a mainstay of her characterization and of the show's comedy. Fey's comedy has always focused on gender, beginning with her work on Saturday Night Live (SNL) where she became that show's first female head writer in 1999. A year later she moved from behind the scenes to appear in the "Weekend Update" sketches, attracting national attention as a gifted comic with a penchant for zeroing in on women's issues. Fey's connection to feminist politics escalated when she returned to SNL for guest appearances during the presidential campaign of 2008, first in a sketch protesting the sexist media treatment of Hillary Clinton, and more forcefully, in her stunning imitations of vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, which launched Fey into national politics and prominence. Digital dialectics: the paradox of cinema in a studio without walls Scott McQuire There’s a scene in Forrest Gump (Robert Zemeckis, Paramount Pictures; USA, 1994) which encapsulates the novel potential of the digital threshold. The scene itself is nothing spectacular. It involves neither exploding spaceships, marauding dinosaurs, nor even the apocalyptic destruction of a postmodern cityscape. Rather, it depends entirely on what has been made invisible within the image. The scene, in which actor Gary Sinise is shown in hospital after having his legs blown off in battle, is noteworthy partly because of the way that director Robert Zemeckis handles it. Sinise has been clearly established as a full-bodied character in earlier scenes. When we first see him in hospital, he is seated on a bed with the stumps of his legs resting at its edge. The assumption made by most spectators, whether consciously or unconsciously, is that the shot is tricked up; that Sinise’s legs are hidden beneath the bed, concealed by a hole cut through the mattress. The film is a Red Chillies co-production with director Rohit Shetty’s Rohit Shetty Productions. Shetty and Khan teamed for 2013 hit “Chennai Express” that collected $62 million worldwide. The passing nar- rative also reveals the constitutive role of melancholy and nostalgia both in creat- ing cyborg cinema and in undermining its subversive potential.
