District Council of Robe NEW RESIDENT KIT MAYOR'S WELCOME WELCOME TO ROBE

Thank you for choosing Robe as a place to reside, relax in and enjoy!

Apart from being visually stunning, we are also well known for our community strength and generosity of spirit. This is the land of the Boandik people which they called ‘Wingar’. We respect their spiritual connection with this country and acknowledge their deep feelings of attachment and relationship with this land. Our Council, which represents our community at all levels, strives to continue to build a stronger and more cohesive community.

That saying about 'Don’t look back, you’re not going that way', is true for the Elected Members of the District Council of Robe.

The things we value include: • Looking towards the future needs of Robe • Preserving all that makes Robe so special • Contributing to community plans and outcomes • Ensuring open and transparent communication across the community • Respecting our differences • Being aware of the needs of our whole community • Being responsible, compassionate and logical in our dealings as Elected Members • Being connected and available to our community

It is the 'feel of Robe' that draws and keeps our people here. We all value the natural beauty of our area and recognise how lucky we are to have so many heritage buildings which add so much to our town's character. We are passionate about understanding and looking after our coastline and environs.

Robe has seen European settlers and thousands of Chinese people passing through on their way to the goldfields of Victoria. It has seen many tragic shipwrecks and loads of wool leaving its wharf bound for London. It has seen awful storms, balmy days, has been home to many and a holiday destination to many more. The only constant has been change since it was settled in 1846.

All of this has left today's Robe with a rich history which we all embrace and in which we all play a part. There is much to do here. There are many and varied groups in which to be involved. Councils website can help you get connected and make a start on your Robe journey. If you are not technically minded, drop into the Robe Library and Visitor Information Centre for great face-to-face service. Or alternatively, contact any of the local Elected Members who will be able to point you in the right direction.Welcome to the District Council of Robe and we look forward to seeing you enjoy and contribute to our part of the world.

TRANSMUTATION (REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE) LOCATION 14 Flint Street, Robe Contact Brad Scott 0414 730 106 Residents are encouraged to deliver all clean plastic waste but specifically number 3 and 6 plastics that are not recycled by roadside recovery means. YOUR PROPERTY LAND VALUES All land within the Council area, except for land specifically exempt (e.g. crown land), is rateable. The District Council of Robe has previously resolved to use capital value as the basis for valuing land within the Council area. Council considers that this method of valuing land provides the fairest method of distributing the rate burden across all ratepayers.

Any ratepayer dissatisfied with a property valuation may object to the Valuer-General in writing within 60 days of receiving notice of the valuation. The address of the Valuer-General is; Office of the Valuer-General, GPO Box 1354, 5001, email: [email protected] The Council has no role in this process. It is important to note that the lodgement of an objection does not change the due date for payment of rates.

RATES Rate revenue is generated by the broad application of fundamental principles of taxation (fairness and equity, simplicity, ability to pay and efficiency) with a view to achieving an equitable rate burden amongst ratepayers. Rates are due in installments on 1 September, 1 December, 1 March and 1 June. A new notice is sent out for each instalment. You can also opt to receive rates notices via email. Want to understand the rating system and what council rates pay for? Visit www.lga.sa gov.au.

WASTE CONTROL SYSTEMS The construction, installation or alteration of a septic tank system (waste control system) requires approval under the provisions of the Public and Environmental Health (Waste Control) Regulations. No work in relation to the construction, installation or alteration of a waste control system can occur until approval by the relevant authority has been granted.

The District Council of Robe provides a full approval and inspection service of all installations and alterations. This requires all plumbing contractors to advise Council of any work that they are undertaking in our area. Plumbing work can only be carried out by licensed operators and this includes owner/builders. Septic Tanks in the township are desludged on a four yearly cycle. You will be notified when this work is to take place with a letter. You are required to expose your septic tank lid, so that council’s contractor can gain access.
