Former Clarion greats Wade Schalles (1971-74) and Kurt Angle (1988-92) were two of only fifteen collegiate wrestlers named to the All-Time team. The team had four members from Iowa, three from Oklahoma State, two each from Clarion and Iowa State, and one each from Fresno State, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Pitt-Johnstown. Schalles, a native of Hollidaysburg, wrestled at Clarion from 1971-74. He had an unbeliev- able career record of 153-5-1, won NCAA Division I Titles in 1972 at 150-pounds and 1973 at 158-pounds. His top seasons were 40-0-1 in 1974, 39-1 in 1972 and 37-0 in 1973. Wade held the NCAA record for most career pins (106) and also won NCAA College Division titles in 1972 and 73, and was voted the “Outstanding Wrestler” at both tournaments in 1972. Angle, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa. (Mt. Lebanon High), had a storied career at Clarion from 1988-92. He was 116-10-2 and was a two time NCAA Division I Heavyweight Champion in 1990 and 1992, plus placed second at nationals in 1991. He is one of only four wrestlers in EWL history to win 4 individual titles (1988, 90, 91, 92) and three PSAC crowns (90, 91, 92). He was EWL “Wrestler of the Year” in 1990 and 92 and PSAC “Wrestler of the Year” three times (90, 91, 92). He is also remembered for winning the World Championship in 1995 and Olympic Gold in Atlanta, Georgia in 1996. Watching the duo get their awards was former Clarion head coach Bob Bubb (1967-92). “When I was up on that stage, I was looking down at coach Bubb and he was all smiles. You could see it in his eyes that this brought him a lot of joy. It made it special for me to be here for him, much more than for me myself.” Said Kurt Angle, “ I was happy for coach (Bubb), for all of his hard work paid off in Wade and I being honored. It was nice for him and Clarion, and proved we could produce champions. Coach Bubb means everything to me.” Bubb, who had an overall record of 322-121-4 said, “As I stood and watched the ceremony I was thinking how wonderful it would have been to have all the Clarion wrestling fans here to enjoy this moment,” noted a very proud Bubb. “So many people have helped and done so much for Clarion to achieve this type of success. I told them both that I couldn’t have been prouder of them as people and wrestlers.” KURT ANGLE, COACH BOB BUBB, WADE SCHALLES AT 75 TH ANNIVERSARY CEREMONY.
