    Kyudo - the Way of the Bow

    Kyudo - the Way of the Bow Centuries ago in Japan, archery was regarded as the highest discipline of the Samurai warrior. Then, as the bow lost its significance as a weapon of war, and under the influence of Buddhism, Shinto, Daoism and Confucianism, Japanese archery evolved into Kyudo, the "Way of the Bow", a powerful and highly refined contemplative practice. Kyudo, as taught by Kanjuro Shibata XX, is not a competitive sport and marksmanship is regarded as relatively unimportant. According to Shibata Sensei, a master of the Heki Ryu Bishu Chikurin-ha school of Kyudo, the ultimate goal of Kyudo is to polish the mind - the same as in sitting meditation. "One is not polishing one's shooting style or technique, but the mind. The dignity of shooting is the important point. In preparing young wrestlers (16-17 years of age) the design often follows a relatively well-developed system of training for adult masters of sport. In general, the youthful body is characterized by a high intensity cardio-respiratory and blood systems during physical stress. So far, no data on the impact of intense competitive activity on the dynamics of individual aspects of preparedness of young wrestlers is available. Our objective was to study the impact of competitive activity on the functional training state in young wrestlers. Keywords: Competitions, Rules, Female Wrestling, Factor Analysis, Technique Wrestlers, training, weight management. INTRODUCTION Wrestling is unique among athletics. It is considered to be one of the most physically demanding sports among high school and college athletics. Wrestling was one of the most favored events in the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece. The first organized national wrestling tournament took place in New York City in 1888. From the Athens Games in 1896, until today, the wrestling events are also an important part of the modern Olympic Games. The International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA) originated in 1912 in Antwerp, Belgium. The 1st NCAA Wrestling Championships were also held in 1912, in Ames, Iowa. USA Wrestling, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, became the national governing body of amateur wrestling in 1983.

We seem to be prone to creating myths; stories about ourselves, our pasts and our world that attempt to explain how we got here and how we should behave. We hear them so often that we come to believe they are true. Sometimes they are helpful and enable us to act more like our heroes, but many times they are not. Often our myths directly contradict our immediate knowledge and experience. Yet we just as often take actions based on those myths despite all evidence to the contrary. Doctors are not only the creators of myths but also the unwitting believers in unchallenged myths that guide our everyday practice of medicine. In the past few years a movement called Evidence-Based Medicine has arisen to try to combat these myths or what is known as standard practice. But believe it or not, not all physicians believe that evidence is the best basis for medicine! This talk will address many of the most common myths in medical practice today. Beliefs regarding aging, diet, weight loss, exercise, disease prevention, healing, depression and other mental states, pregnancy and even the common cold will be examined as to their origin, why we hold onto them so closely, and what the evidence is that either supports or more commonly refutes them. An actress who identifies herself as Jane Doe has sued the Internet Movie Database Web site, and its parent company, Amazon, for revealing her actual age. I’m not making that up. Here’s the actual complaint, which was filed in a federal court in Seattle. In case you haven’t used it, IMDB is a Web site that has detailed information on any movie ever made. I personally love it. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve watched a movie on TV and wondered who the actor was in some small role, and where I’d seen him before. IMDB has all that information. But I digress. According to the complaint, Jane Doe is of Asian descent, and her given name is difficult for Americans to spell and pronounce. She has for that reason used a stage name throughout her career. She is also very careful not to provide personal information, including her true age. According to the complaint, “[i]n the entertainment industry, youth is king. If one is perceived to be “over-the-hill” i.e., approaching 40, it is nearly impossible for an up-and-coming actress, such as plaintiff, to get work.” IMDB also offers a service called IMDbPro, which offers “industry insider” information to paying customers. Ms. Doe signed up for the service and in so doing, provided her name, birth date and other personal information.
