Angie Abdou Lethbridge Herald Author Stage 2:00-2:45 Book Signing: 3:00-3:45 Angie Abdou is the author of five novels, including, most recently,In Case I Go, a finalist in the fiction category of the Banff Mountain Book Award, as well as named a best book of 2017 on lists by CBC Books and Rogers Writers’ Trust. The Bone Cage was a CBC Canada Reads finalist, defended by NHL star Georges Laraque, and was awarded the 2011–12 MacEwan Book of the Year shortly after. Her novel Between was named a Best of 2014 book by PRISM Magazine, 49th Shelf, and The Vancouver Sun. Angie is Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Athabasca University. Photo by Wilkie Kevan Home Ice: Reflections of a Reluctant Hockey Mom The author of the Canada Reads–nominated The Bone Cage tackles the ups and downs of amateur hockey, from a mother’s point of view. Over 570,000 people are registered in Hockey Canada and over 600,000 in Hockey USA. It’s a national obsession. But what does that really mean when your child wants to play on a team? As a former varsity athlete and university instructor teaching sport literature, novelist Angie Abdou is no stranger to sport obsession, but she finds herself conflicted when faced with the reality of the struggles, joys, and strains of having a child in amateur hockey. In Home Ice, with equal parts humour and anguish, Abdou charts a full season SPONSORED BY of life as an Atom-level hockey mom, from summer hockey camp to the end-of-season tournament.

S.K. Ali Teen Zone Stage 2:00-2:45 Book Signing: 3:00-3:45 S. K. Ali is the author of the 2018 Morris award finalist,Saints and Misfits. Her debut novel won critical acclaim for its groundbreaking portrayal of an unapologetic Muslim-American teen’s life. She has a degree in Creative Writing and has written about Muslim life for various media, including the Toronto Star and NBC News. She lives in Toronto with her family and a very vocal cat named Yeti. Her second novel, Marvels and Oddities, a story about finding love in the time of Islamophobia, will be published in 2019 by Simon & Schuster.

Saints and Misfits Saints and Misfits is a “timely and authentic” (School Photo by Andrea Stenson Library Journal, starred review) debut novel that feels like a modern day My So-Called Life…starring a Muslim teen. There are three kinds of people in my world: 1. Saints, those special people moving the world forward. Sometimes you glaze over them. Or, at least, I do. They’re in your face so much, you can’t see them, like how you can’t see your nose. 2. Misfits, people who don’t belong. Like me—the way I don’t fit into Dad’s brand-new family or in the leftover one composed of Mom and my older brother, Mama’s-Boy-Muhammad. 3. Monsters. Well, monsters wearing saint masks, like in Flannery O’Connor’s stories. Like the monster at my mosque. People think he’s holy, untouchable, but nobody has seen under the mask. Except me. Pauline Dakin Lethbridge Herald Author Stage 12:00-12:45 Book Signing: 1:00-1:45 Pauline Dakin is an assistant professor at the University of King’s College School of Journalism in Halifax. A journalist who has worked in radio, television, and print, she was also a senior producer for CBC Nova Scotia, host of CBC Radio’s Atlantic Voice, and a long-time health reporter for CBC National News. She has received many national journalism awards, including a citation of merit from The Michener Awards. She lives in Halifax. Run, Hide, Repeat: A Memoir of a Fugitive Childhood An unforgettable family tale of deception and betrayal, love and forgiveness Photo by Alexandra Conway 2017 Pauline Dakin spent her childhood on the run. Without warning, her mother twice uprooted her and her brother, moving thousands of miles away from family and friends. Disturbing events interrupt their outwardly normal life: break- ins, car thefts, even physical attacks on a family friend. Many years later, her mother finally revealed they’d been running from the Mafia and were receiving protection from a covert anti-organized crime task force. But the truth was even more bizarre. Gradually, Dakin’s fears give way to suspicion. She puts her journalistic training to work and discovers that the Mafia threat was actually an elaborate web of lies. As she revisits her past, Dakin uncovers the human capacity for betrayal and deception, and the power of love to forgive. SPONSORED BY SPONSORED BY

Victoria-Margaret is the crown princess of the empire, a direct descendent of Victoria I, the queen who changed the course of history. The imperial tradition of genetically arranged matchmaking will soon guide Margaret into a politically advantageous marriage. But before she does her duty, she’ll have one summer of freedom and privacy in a far corner of empire. Posing as a commoner in Toronto, she meets Helena Marcus, daughter of one of the empire’s greatest placement geneticists, and August Callaghan, the heir to a powerful shipping firm currently besieged by American pirates. In a summer of high-society debutante balls, politically charged tea parties, and romantic country dances, Margaret, Helena, and August discover they share an extraordinary bond and maybe a one-in-a-million chance to have what they want and to change the world in the process. Roy MacGregor Kids’ Zone Stage 1:00-1:45 Book Signing: 2:00-2:45 Roy MacGregor, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012, has been described by the Washington Post as “the closest thing there is to a poet laureate of Canadian hockey.” He is the author of the internationally successful Screech Owls hockey mystery series for young readers, which has sold more than two million copies and is also published in French, Chinese, Swedish, Finnish, and Czech. It is the most successful hockey series in history – second only to Anne of Green Gables as a book series for young readers – and, for two seasons, was a live-action hit on YTV. MacGregor has twice won the ACTRA Award for best television screenwriting.

The Ice Chips and the Haunted Hurricane: Ice Chips Series Book 2 The second title in a new chapter-book series by acclaimed author and Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Roy MacGregor and his daughter, journalist Kerry MacGregor, follows a ragtag hockey team that travels through time to witness key moments in the development of the game and some of its star players. The team’s second adventure has them travelling to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the middle of a storm, as a young Sidney Crosby teaches the Ice Chips about perseverance and creativity—showing them that you don’t need fancy equipment to train hard.

Martin Parnell Lethbridge Herald Author Stage 4:00-4:45 Book Signing: 3:00-3:45 Martin Parnell started his “Quests for Kids” initiative in 2010 after a 25-year career in the mining industry. Over the next five years he completed 10 “Quests.” These included running 250 marathons in one year, setting five Guinness World Records and summiting Mount Kilimanjaro in 21 hours. By the end of 2014, over $1.3-million had been raised for the humanitarian organization Right To Play and 27,000 children had been given the gift of hope. Martin is a professional speaker and the author of Running to the Edge (RMB, 2016) and Marathon Quest – Revised & Updated (RMB, 2018). Martin Parnell lives in Cochrane, Alberta. www.martinparnell.com Photo by Sarah Oughton 2013 The Secret Marathon In 2016, Martin Parnell went on a journey that many believed was madness: running a marathon in Afghanistan in a quest to fight for women’s rights and gender equality. Of course, this was not the first time he had been called crazy. In 2010 he had run 250 marathons in one year and in 2013 he had climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 21 hours. These two endeavours raised $1.3-million for the humanitarian organization Right To Play and had given the gift of hope to over 27,000 children around the world. It was while recovering from a life-threatening and rare blood clot on his brain that Martin had read about Zainab, the first woman to run a marathon in Afghanistan. He was so inspired by her story that he decided that if he was able to recover from his illness he would ask to run with her at the next “Marathon of Afghanistan” in support of rights for girls and women.

In The Secret Marathon, readers will be transported to a country of beauty, SPONSORED BY hardship and complexity, sharing in the despair, resilience and friendliness of the Afghan people as they strive for freedom and equality for themselves and their fellow citizens. Written by 10 y/o Harrison and his dad. A hilarious book about heroic mice living in the sewers under NY Wall Street where they are taught the ancient ways of the Chi Energy Force by Grandmaster. What began as a project to develop Harrison's writing skills when he was 8, the book is something like Ninja Turtles meets Star Wars but with Captain Underpants style humour. The characters and stories in the book will entertain young readers with fun adventure tales while subtly teaching them about the real world. Children will enjoy the humorous action adventure and new vocabulary while parents will appreciate the available learning opportunities and wide range of ideas and topics covered.
