Welcome It’s fall! While golden elm trees and autumn leaves surround us, so does the spirit of learning, reading and books! Come and experience one of Southern Alberta’s largest outdoor festivals woven around amazing author readings, live music performances, a bustling marketplace and fun activities for the whole family. This is the 8th year that the Lethbridge Public Library is hosting The Word On The Street festival. The Lethbridge Public Library acknowledges that we are gathered on the lands of the Blackfoot people of the Canadian Plains and pays respect to the Blackfoot people past, present and future while recognizing and respecting their cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship to the land. The City of Lethbridge is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. Accessibility Information Accessible, all-gender bathrooms are available inside the library in the Children’s Department and upper south wing. All outdoor festival bathrooms are all-gender single use. The sensory story time basket will be available in the Children’s Department for story time programs in Kids’ Corner. If you wish to borrow the wiggle cushions, lap pads, or noise-cancelling headphones for use in the outdoor Kids’ Zone tent, please ask at the Children’s Department desk. Live closed captioning (CART) and sign language interpretation will be available for some events. Please check the website and schedule for details and updates. If you would like to request sign language interpretation for a particular author or event, let us know at [email protected] and we’ll do our best to accommodate. Festival Happenings CVS Midwest Tape Kids’ Corner (Inside the Library) 11:15am - Frontier College Literacy Activities Aimed at all ages, the Reading Tent has physical and non-physical activities based on reading and writing. Possible activities include making your own recycled journal, literacy obstacle course, and story writing. Select a free book to take home! 1:00pm - Nikka Yuko Presents: Storytime with Tad and Tomo Come listen to Tad Mitsui tell children Japanese folk stories such as Peach Boy and Tama the station master cat. Tad will be joined by our own Nikka Yuko greeting neko mascot Tomo. 3:00pm - Pride Fest Presents: Drag Storytime for Everyone Celebrate diversity and have a super fun time with Drag Storytime, presented in partnership with Lethbridge Pride Fest! Meet our glamorous drag queen and kings in the Kids’ Corner of the Children’s Department, where they’ll be sharing stories, rhymes, and songs. All families and friends are welcome to join us for this fabulous celebration. Our special guests will be Molly Dooker, King Hunk, and Killa Watt. Scavenger Hunt – All day Stop by the information booth in the marketplace to take part in the Global News Lethbridge Scavenger Hunt. Find all the clues before the evening news to get a prize! Suitable for all ages; prizes for adults, kids, and teens. A picture is worth a thousand words. Take a snapshot of the festival and tweet or Instagram it with the tag #WOTSyql and be entered in for an extra prize draw! Open House in Read On – All day Read On is a library treasure that not many people know about! The Read On program offers adult literacy services at the Lethbridge Public Library and will be having an open house inside the Library at this year’s Festival. Make sure to visit them by the children’s department and learn what services they can offer you and how you can become a part of Read On! Special Presentations 4:00pm – Kids’ Zone Stage: Rocky Mountain Book Award Presentation Join the members of this Alberta-wide children’s readers’ choice awards to present the medal to Faith Erin Hicks, 2018 award winner, and hear Faith speak about her new book The Divided Earth. Special presentation by the students of the Dr. Hamman School Mountaineers. 4:00pm – Teen Zone Stage: Teen Writing Contest Winners Students in grades 7-12 have submitted their best short stories to a committee of volunteer judges to be critiqued on the entertainment value and writing quality of their work. The top 3 contestants will be reading on the Teen Stage at 4:00pm and a winner will be announced! Meet CKXU DJ’s, staff and Board of Directors members while exploring the LPL Vinyl Revival Program. Hear directly from CKXU volunteers about their involvement in CKXU, all while dipping into the LPL’s custom currated vinyl collection as you enjoy a cup of “Power The Tower” punch from CKXU 1:00 Ask An Expert: Scriptwriting Join our panel of experts to hear more about their experiences writing for stage and screen. 2:00 Hand Lettering Workshop Learn the basic strokes of brush lettering and explore how putting them together forms first letters then words. Transform your handwriting into beautiful art! 3:00 Ask An Expert: Editing and Publishing Our panel of editors and industry professionals are here to share their advice on editing and submitting your work. 4:00 Writing Critiques Give your writing a boost with a short on-the-spot critique from an established author or editor! Our volunteers will provide fifteen minutes of critique and advice for one page of writing. Sign up on festival day at the Information Booth, starting at 11:00. Spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Centre for Oral History and Tradition Storytelling Booth Our storytelling booth at Word on the Street is an interactive and fun opportunity for children to briefly interview a mother, father or legal guardian and have their interview e-mailed to them. Oral historians will be on site to help guide children do one-on-one, family history interviews. This is a great activity to ignite your child's interest in their family history and the past! What is Oral History? Oral history is the collection of historical information through interviews with people who have personal knowledge of past events. What is the COHT? The Centre for Oral History & Tradition (COHT), located at the University of Lethbridge, seeks to further excellence in the practice of oral history in our academic community and in southern Alberta. The COHT helps to identify, establish and assist community oral history projects undertaken in southern Alberta.
