For this purpose, the ripe fruits were collected from the northern regions of Pakistan. The major nutritional components (moisture, ash, lipids, proteins, fibres, car- bohydrates, and total sugar) were found to be in the suitable range along with good computed energy. Total dry weight, pH, and titratable acidity (percent citric acid) were (17.60±1.94)–(21.97±2.34) mg/100 g, (3.20±0.07)–(4.78±0.15), and (0.84±0.40)%–(2.00±0.08)%, respectively. Low riboflavin (vitamin B2) and niacin (vitamin B3) contents were recorded in all the fruits, while ascorbic acid (vitamin C) was in the range from (15.20±1.25) to (17.03±1.71) mg/100 g fresh weight (FW). -

Box 3708, Nepal *Author for Correspondence ABSTRACT A tree belonging to Ziziphus (Rhamnaceae) from Timal region of Kavrepalanchok district, Central Nepal is illustrated and described as a new species Ziziphus budhensis KR. Bhattarai & Pathak, a narrow endemic from central Nepal. This species did not match with the Ziziphus species reported from this region. Although the new species is similar to Z. montana W.W.Sm. from Yunan, China with trinerved leaves lacking conspicuous secondary veins, it differs tree habit, shape and size of leaves, length of peduncle, carpel, and shape and size of fruits and seeds as well as distribution range. Detailed taxonomic description, illustration, photographs, ecology and its economic and religious value are discussed. Keywords: Ziziphus, Rhamnaceae, Timal, New Species, Endemic, Nepal INTRODUCTION Ziziphus has about 100 species reported from warm-temperate and subtropical regions throughout the world (Mabberley 2008), among them 17 species are from India (Bhandari and Bhansali, 2000), 12 species from China (Zao, 2007), seven species from Bhutan (Grierson and Long, 1991) and six species are already reported from Nepal (NHPL, 2011). The unidentified species belongs to genus Ziziphus and family Rhamnaceae. Due to its economical importance local people from the Timal region of Kavreplanchok district brought material to the National Herbarium and Plant Laboratories (KATH) for identification. -

An ethnobotanical survey of rural areas of Bilaspur district was carried out to enumerate the species di- versity and traditional uses of family Moraceae. The district Bilaspur lies between 31° 12' 30" and 31° 35' 45" North latitudes and between 76° 23' 45" and 76° 55' 40" East longitudes in the Shivalik hills of the Himalayas next to Punjab plains in the basin of river satluj. In present study 22 species belonging to 4 genera of the family, Moraceae have been recorded in district Bilaspur. Genus Ficus has represented by 15 species, Morus by 4, Artocarpus by 2 and Broussonetia by one species. As per ethnobotanical uses 15 species edible, 12 fodder, 8 timber, 8 medicinal, 5 ornamental/avenue and 3 sacred plants have been documented. Each plant species has been pro- vided with information on botanical names, common names, habit, availability status, parts used and ethnobotanical uses. Ficus religiosa and F. benghalensis are considered as sacred plants and no one can cut them for their individual interest. This study also indicates that the district Bilaspur has rich floral diversity and inhab- itants still rely on plants for their livelihood. -

The benefi - cial role of endophytic organisms has dramatically documented world- wide in recent years. Endophytes promote plant growth and yield, remove contaminants from soil, and provide soil nutrients via phosphate solubili- zation/nitrogen fi xation. The capacity of endophytes on abundant produc- tion of bioactive compounds against array of phytopathogens makes them a suitable platform for biocontrol explorations. Endophytes have unique interaction with their host plants and play an important role in induced systemic resistance or biological control of phytopathogens. This trait also benefi ts in promoting plant growth either directly or indirectly. Plant growth promotion and biocontrol are the two sturdy areas for sustainable agriculture where endophytes are the key players with their broad range of benefi cial activities. The coexistence of endophytes and plants has been exploited recently in both of these arenas which are explored in this chapter. The extract was then dried and subjected to phyto-chemical screening that showed the presence of alkaloid, steroid, terpene, glycoside and saponin in different solvent extracts. The extract was then used to explore the anti bacterial activity and it was found to be effective against Proteus vulgaris, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Herein, green synthesis of silver nanoparticles was performed using the aqueous solution of Ziziphus mauritiana leaves extract (ZM-LE) as a bio-reducing agent. The as-obtained silver nanoparticles were characterized by using UV-Vis spectroscopy, XRD (X-ray diffraction), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), and FT-IR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy). In addition, the effects of the concentrations of the leaves extract, silver nitrate, and the temperature on the preparation of nanoparticles were also investigated. In order to determine the nature of secondary metabolites present in leaves extract, a preliminary investigation of phytoconstituents was carried out using different methods including Folin-Ciocalteu and AlCl3 methods.
