Mahogany poachers and habitat loss in the 1970s brought this species to near extinction in South Florida. Bottom: fuzzywuzzy airplant (Tillandsia pruinosa), a tropical epiphyte that grows in several conservation areas in and around the Big Cypress Swamp. This and other rare epiphytes are threatened by poaching, hydrological change, and exotic pest plant invasions. Funding for Rare Plants of South Florida was provided by The Elizabeth Ordway Dunn Foundation, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and the Steve Arrowsmith Fund. Nemastylis floridana Small Celestial Lily South Florida Status: Critically imperiled. One occurrence in five conservation areas (Dupuis Reserve, J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area, Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area, Royal Palm Beach Pines Natural Area, & Pal-Mar). Taxonomy: Monocotyledon; Iridaceae. Habit: Perennial terrestrial herb. Distribution: Endemic to Florida. Wunderlin (1998) reports it as occasional in Florida from Flagler County south to Broward County.

The Matecumbe Historical Trust Corp. Is a 501(C) 3 Non-Profit Organization Dedicated to the Education, History, and Preservation of the Florida Keys
The Matecumbe Historical Trust Corp. is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to the education, history, and preservation of the Florida Keys. Our founder, Mr. Irving Eyster, has been our local Keys historian for over 60 years - collecting artifacts, memorabilia, and photos. He is an archaeologist, historian, and a professor. The Matecumbe Historical Trust is committed to the creation of the definitive anthropological and historical museum of the Florida Keys. The museum will preserve the unique history of the Keys, and it will become the pre-eminent repository of artifacts as well as a venue for academic symposia and research about the Keys and related subjects worldwide. It will house Mr. Eyster’s vast collection of artifacts, photographs, historical articles, and memorabilia. It will be enhanced by individual items and collections donated or loaned from others who have directly contacted us to express their most sincere interest. It will be a significant educational center for residents and tourists. Some of the themes to be included in the permanent collection will be: Geologic, Prehistoric, Explorations, Shipwrecks, Wreckers, Settlers, Pirates, Lighthouse, Military Presence, Spanish Connection, Flagler Railway, Fishing, Hurricanes, Post Hurricane, Overseas Highway, Tourism, and Commercial. This Trust has worked extensively for the past several years photographing, cataloging and laying out the exhibits of the permanent collections as well as the layout of each individual exhibit. Florida Keys Challenge January 15-22, 2020 Trip Highlights: Florida Sea Base, Long Key State Park, Curry Hammock State Park, Bahia Honda State Park Start: Florida Sea Base MM 73.8 Paddling Distance: 29 – 63 miles over seven days Shuttle: Departs from Camp Wesumkee at 1PM on January 15th, 2020 MM 34 Paddlers will have a pre-trip shuttle. You will park your car at the trip’s ending point by 1PM on January 15th. After boats are loaded on trailers, you’ll be shuttled to the trip’s launching point at Florida Sea Base. Those vehicles will be waiting for you at trip’s end. Registration Deadline: January 1st or when trip capacity of 50 paddlers is reached Trip Fee: $799 per paddler. Includes camping, meals, maps, t-shirt, water bottle and goodie bag and evening entertainment. The Meal Plan. Meals will be provided by professional caterers or local civic groups. Expect hearty, hot fare for breakfast and dinner. On-water lunch stops will include ample portions of fruit, chips, cookies, granola bars, PB&J sandwiches, and water. Islamorada, Village of Islands, Florida REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR AREA KNOWN AS “THE FILLS” IN ISLAMORADA, FLORIDA (RFP 21-01) Issue Date: January 5, 2021 Islamorada, Village of Islands (the “Village”), will receive formal proposals from qualified consultants to create a Master Plan for the area called “The Fills”, per the lease agreement between the Village and the State of Florida Department of Transportation (“FDOT”), and the lease agreement with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection until 3:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on February 11, 2021.
