HOUSE JOURNAL of the ONE HUNDRED SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY of the STATE OF TENNESSEE TUESDAY, JANUARY 11, 2011 FIRST ORGANIZATIONAL DAY The House of Representatives of the One Hundred Seventh General Assembly of the State of Tennessee was called to order at twelve o’clock noon by Kent Williams, Speaker of the One Hundred Sixth General Assembly, in accordance with Article II, Sections 3 and 8 of the Constitution of the State of Tennessee. The Speaker invited family and friends of the members-elect into the Chamber. The proceedings were opened with prayer by Representative K. Brooks. Representative Ragan led the House in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Representative Ragan introduced the musical group, Cordis Voce, who performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “Tennessee Waltz.” COMMUNICATION November 18, 2010 Honorable Sidney Chism Chair, Shelby County Commission Shelby County Board of Commissioners Suite 450, 160 North Main Street Memphis, Tennessee 38103 Dear Chairman Chism: This is to confirm that a vacancy exists in the House District 98 seat of the Tennessee House of Representatives. This vacancy was created by the untimely death of Representative (Representative-elect) Ulysses Jones, Jr., which occurred on November 9, 2010. As you are aware, Representative Jones was re-elected to the House District 98 seat on November 2, 2010. The results from that election were certified by the Shelby County Election Commission on November 17, 2010. 1 TUESDAY, JANUARY 11, 2011 – FIRST ORGANIZATIONAL DAY I attended services “Celebrating the Life and Legacy of the Honorable Ulysses Jones, Jr.” in Memphis on Monday, November 15, 2010 to pay my respects to Representative Jones and offer my condolences to his family. I am enclosing a copy of the program Celebrating His Life and Legacy from the November 15, 2010 services. I would ask that you provide this letter to the Shelby County Commission so the Commission may consider action to fill the vacancy. Thank you for your attention to this matter. The results from that election were certified on November 17, 2010 by the Shelby County Election Commission. Representative Ulysses Jones, Jr. suffered an untimely death on November 9, 2010. A letter was sent to the Honorable Sidney Chism, Chairman of the Shelby County Board of Commissioners, on November 18, 2010, confirming the vacancy in the Ninety-eighth Representative District. The letter will be entered into the Journal demonstrating the vacancy in this District. At this point, no action has been taken to fill the vacancy Ninety-ninth Representative District--Ron Lollar The Speaker asked the Clerk if any petitions had been filed relative to the election. The Clerk announced no petitions had been filed. OATHS OF OFFICE OF REPRESENTATIVES-ELECT The Representatives-elect stood and were administered the Oath of Office by the Honorable Gary R.
