Analysis of Talk Shows Between Obama and Trump Administrations by Jack Norcross — 69 An Analysis of the Political Affiliations and Professions of Sunday Talk Show Guests Between the Obama and Trump Administrations Jack Norcross Journalism Elon University Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements in an undergraduate senior capstone course in communications Abstract The Sunday morning talk shows have long been a platform for high-quality journalism and analysis of the week’s top political headlines. This research will compare guests between the first two years of Barack Obama’s presidency and the first two years of Donald Trump’s presidency. A quantitative content analysis of television transcripts was used to identify changes in both the political affiliations and profession of the guests who appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” CBS’s “Face the Nation,” ABC’s “This Week” and “Fox News Sunday” between the two administrations. Findings indicated that the dominant political viewpoint of guests differed by show during the Obama administration, while all shows hosted more Republicans than Democrats during the Trump administration. Furthermore, U.S. Senators and TV/Radio journalists were cumulatively the most frequent guests on the programs. I. Introduction Sunday morning political talk shows have been around since 1947, when NBC’s “Meet the Press” brought on politicians and newsmakers to be questioned by members of the press. The show’s format would evolve over the next 70 years, and give rise to fellow Sunday morning competitors including ABC’s “This Week,” CBS’s “Face the Nation” and “Fox News Sunday.” Since the mid-twentieth century, the overall media landscape significantly changed with the rise of cable news, social media and the consumption of online content.

The agreement incorporates many of Clear Channel Radio’s most prominent news/talk stations, including those in Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix and Atlanta. • Tools of the Persuasion Trade
Tools of the persuasion trade I admit it. I have been a Fox News devotee for a long time. I have watched the channel ebb and flow over the years as some of its key personalities have bitten the dust and moved on (some by choice and some, involuntarily). One of those is Mr. Bill O'Reilly whose departure left perhaps THE biggest gaping hole in their lineup. Fortunately, it was filled by the courageous and often very humorous Tucker Carlson who is perhaps the most important man in the Fox stable of personalities. Over the years we've seen the departure of Ed Henry, Erik Bolling, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Bob Beckel, Shepard Smith and Megyn Kelly, to name but a few. Some have gone on to bigger and better things while others have simply faded into the media wallpaper. One person who has remained at Fox is Chris Wallace, host of the Sunday morning program of the same name. I was a fan of his father's interviewing style (the famous Mike Wallace) for many years. There was no doubt that Mike Wallace was a Democrat, but he was a fearless interviewer. His son's political stripe was not always so apparent. It has become so over the past four years as he has made no bones about his dislike of Donald Trump and his embrace of Democrat politics. His performance as moderator of the Trump/Biden debate of a few months ago, sealed it for me. There was no doubt left in my mind…Wallace had 'defected' to the other side as his moderatorship clearly showed.

  • Remarks by Chris Wallace Accepting the Media Institute's 2018 Freedom of Speech Award October 24, 2018
Remarks by Chris Wallace Accepting The Media Institute’s 2018 Freedom of Speech Award October 24, 2018 First of all – I want to thank The Media Institute for this award and the important work you do. Your efforts these last 40 years to support free speech and a free press have never been more important. I want to thank my colleague Brit Hume for your kind introduction. Brit – you read it just the way I wrote it. We all know how evenings like this tend to go these days. The person getting the award tells you what a threat President Trump poses to a free press – how dangerous his comments are about – “fake news is the enemy of the American people.” And if the person getting the award is anywhere near the center – he also warns his colleagues to stay in their lane – and not get drawn into arguments with the President – not to become advocates. I know – because I have given speeches like that. I will get there in a few minutes. But first – I want to talk about the good news – how fortunate those of us who work in this business are – in what we do for a living. I want to remind you why we got into journalism in the first place – the excitement of learning something important – and then getting the chance to share it with everyone else. My first job – if you can call it that – was in 1964 – at the Republican Convention in San Francisco. I was Walter Cronkite’s “go-fer” – go for coffee, go for pencils.
