FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SCARSDALE FORUM SPEAKERS SERIES RETURNS THIS FALL SCARSDALE NATIVE PETER GROSZ TO DISCUSS “POLITICAL COMEDY IN THE CURRENT AGE” SCARSDALE, NY (10/23/17) -- Television writer, actor and comedian Peter Grosz will discuss “Political Comedy in the Current Age” in the next installment of the Scarsdale Forum Sunday Speakers Series, on Sunday, October 29, 2017. All members of the public are welcome to attend this event, which will be held at the Scarsdale Woman’s Club, 37 Drake Road, Scarsdale, NY. at 3:00 pm. There is no charge for attending. Grosz grew up in Scarsdale, and attended Heathcote Elementary, Scarsdale Middle School and Scarsdale High School. He moved to Chicago to study at Northwestern, which is where he began his improv training, first at iO Chicago and then at Second City, where he wrote and performed in four reviews on the ETC stage. Grosz has appeared in films such as Stranger Than Fiction, Slow Learners, Aardvark and Rough Night, and TV shows including Key and Peele, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Inside Amy Schumer, and Vinyl, with a recurring role on Veep. He wrote for Late Night With Seth Meyers, received two Emmys for his writing on The Colbert Report, and currently is an executive producer and plays Mike Pence on The President Show. He is a regular panelist on NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me and appears in a long-running commercial campaign for Sonic Drive-In. Scarsdale Forum The Scarsdale Forum is a 501(c)(3) civic organization dedicated to discussion and analysis of all issues relevant to Scarsdale residents. Since 1904, the Forum has contributed meaningfully to Village affairs through its written reports, public speaker events, and committee discussions. This paper aims to investigate American TV programs, The President Show and Saturday Night Live‘s The Presidential Debate, by employing humor theory seen from Van Dijk‘s critical discourse analysis. The dialogues used by the impersonators are analyzed to figure out the elements of funny features, comedy, and parody. Hence, the purpose of this study is to answer whether or not the discourse mechanism can build humor in The President Show and Saturday Night Live‘s The Presidential Debate. The data apply ten Comedy Central‘s YouTube videos and four Saturday Night Live‘s YouTube videos. The data comprises of political and power discourse. The analysis concludes that both shows utilize some aggressive strategies to criticize Trump‘s character, such as metaphor to represent policies, contrast to illustrate positive self-representation, and hyperbole to demonstrate racism.
