Spencer Llywydd / President Mrs Sally R. Evans, B.V.Sc., M.R.C.V.S. Islywydd / Vice President Mrs Grace Lees Website: www.Caerwys-Show.org.uk 1 A Message from the President Although it came as a pleasant surprise when I was invited to take on the role of the 2017 Caerwys Agricultural Show President, I was and am very grateful for this huge honour. I first attended the Show in 1994, shortly after joining what was then Sergeant and Oliver Veterinary Practice in Caerwys. My attendance then was in the capacity of on-call duty vet for the Show or taking part in the fun dog show with my two rescued dogs. I have been an avid supporter of this Show ever since. In whatever role I attend, I notice the variety on the field year on year gets better and better. This is testament to the effort and continued hard work of very many people. Although not a member of the Show committee, I am acutely aware that the preparation for this event is dependent on a multitude of volunteers, not only on the day, but throughout the year. It is wonderful to see the fruits of this hard work. May I say an enormous, personal thank-you to all who give up their time to enable this event to take place and make it the landmark success that it is today. Each year, as the second Saturday in June gets closer, breaths are held, fingers are crossed and prayers are said, for what is perhaps almost as important as all the preparations – the weather!! May it be kind to us again. Finally, it is a privilege to be the 2017 President, and I would like to wish everyone a very enjoyable day on Saturday 10th June. Every success and best wishes to all. I would like to pay tribute to the founder members for their inspiration and enterprise in launching the show back in the nineteen seventies. I would like to thank all the past and present members of the Show Committee for all their hard work, commitment and dedication along the way. Not forgetting all our old friends who are very sadly no longer with us. The contribution of all our other staunch supporters from near and far; who have worked tirelessly and contributed in so many different way over the last forty years in order to keep the show going, especially during the more challenging times, is also very much appreciated. That includes all our volunteer helpers for their invaluable labour, the stall holders, entertainers, exhibitors, judges, stewards and the charitable organisations who work, in conjunction with the committee, to stage the show. Staging the show also involves a major financial outlay that would be totally impossible without the generous support of all our many sponsors, for which we are extremely grateful. • Women and Crime in Sixteenth-Century Wales
Women and Crime in Sixteenth-Century Wales Elizabeth Anne Howard A dissertation submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of History, Archaeology and Religion Cardiff University 2020 i Summary This thesis is the first full-length study of women and crime in sixteenth-century Wales. After the Acts of Union of 1536 and 1543, Wales fell under English legal jurisdiction. As such, Wales provides a key setting through which to question how a new system of criminal law could be developed and implemented. The sixteenth- century, however, has been somewhat neglected by historians of crime, as has the location of Wales. This study addresses this gap in research by utilising the detailed depositional evidence from the Welsh Great Sessions c.1542 to 1590. Further, this thesis draws especially on evidence from Montgomeryshire and Flintshire due to the richness of the surviving source material in these counties’ gaol files, and the fact that these two counties were part of the same Great Sessions circuit. Compared to the history of Welsh crime, the study of gender and crime has been much more vibrant. This thesis builds on previous research in this field by placing women’s experience as perpetrators and victims of crime at the forefront of the investigation. Throughout, I examine the three main categories of offence that women experienced – theft, homicide, and witchcraft – and question how a woman’s gender affected her treatment before the law. Indeed, the central arguments of these chapters expose the differences between criminal accusations made against women in their original formats and how these allegations could be modified and changed throughout the legal process.
