Nonetheless, the early Miocene fossil record of low-latitude vertebrates is scarce; hence, crocodylians remain poorly known in the region. The Castillo Formation, located in the northwest of Venezuela, preserves an interesting vertebrate fauna with a well-constrained late early Miocene age. Previous work dealing with crocodylians of this formation only recorded three taxa: the gavialoid Siquisiquesuchus venezuelensis and Gryposuchus sp. and indeterminate alligatoroid remains. New cranial and mandibular material recently recovered from the Castillo Formation allows us to document four previously unrecognised alligatoroid forms: Purussaurus sp., Caiman sp., an indeterminate caimanine and an indeterminate alligatoroid. With six taxa, the crocodylian assemblage reveals a previously undocumented relatively high taxonomic diversity in the early Miocene. The Castillo crocodylians show a broad range of morphological disparity and body sizes ranging from small (2.5 m–62 kg) to large (7.5 m–1600 kg) taxa. Thus, crocodylian niche partition, as well as the abundance and variety of resources and environmental heterogeneity of aquatic ecosystems in South America, were already established by at least the early Miocene.

Carrillo*,** *Paläontologisches Institut und Museum, Universität Zürich, Karl-Schmid-Strasse 4, CH-8006 Zurich ([email protected]) **Museum of Zoology, University of Cambridge, Downing St, CB2 3EJ Cambridge UK South America (SA) was isolated during most of the Cenozoic and was home to a highly endemic fauna, which include caviomorph rodents, xenarthrans (sloths, anteaters and armadillos) and South American native ungulates (SANUs), among others. SANUs are a conspicuous faunal element in the continent fossil record and exhibit a high taxonomic diversity and large morphological disparity. However, the phylogenetic relationships of this group with other placentals is not fully resolved. The isolation of SA ceased during the late Neogene after the formation of the Isthmus of Panama and the establishment of a land connection with North America (NA). As result, one of the greatest biological experiments of biota exchange at a continental scale took place, the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI). The Neotropical fossil record is essential to better understand the diversity patterns and mammal evolution in SA. However, there is a fossil sampling bias in the continent, and is little what we know from the tropics when compared with the temperate faunas. This obscures our understanding of the GABI and the palaeobiogeography of the endemic groups in the continent. In this contribution I study the palaeobiology and phylogenetic relationships of an exceptionally complete SANU representative, and present new findings from northern SA and its implications for the GABI.

The objective of this contribution is to make taxonomical, chorologi- cal, stratigraphic, and biogeographical considerations of the sloths Scelidotheriinae from the late Cenozoic with emphasis on the Argentinean records. The subfamily Scelidotheriinae is recorded during the middle Miocene to early Holocene in South America, more precisely in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Resumen: Los perezosos Scelidotheriinae (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Mylodontidae) representan un clado suda- mericano que, a pesar de tener una distribución geográfica muy amplia, no participaron del Gran Intercambio Biótico Americano (GIBA). El objetivo de esta contribución es realizar consideraciones taxonómicas, corológi- cas, estratigráficas y biogeográficas de los Scelidotheriinae del Cenozoico tardío con énfasis en los registros de Argentina. El material recolectado por pobladores del lugar incluía un gran diente de caimán (Purussaurus), restos de tortugas (Podocnemididae?) y matamata (Chelus), y un fragmento de maxilar de Hilarcotherium sp. (Mammalia, Astrapotheria), conocido previamente por los hallazgos de la especie tipo Hilarcotherium castanedaii (Vallejo- Pareja, et al., 2015) en los estratos del Grupo Honda (Formación La Victoria) en el municipio de Purificación, Tolima, y de Hilarcotherium miyou (Carrillo, et al., 2018) de la Formación Castilletes, al sureste de la península de La Guajira.
