The festival presents 12 films representing a cross-section of important cinematic works overlooked by audiences, critics and distributors. The films are screened in the 1,500-seat Virginia Theatre, a restored movie palace built in the 1920s. A portion of the festival’s income goes toward on-going renovations at the theatre. The festival brings together the films’ producers, writers, actors and directors to help showcase their work. A film- maker or scholar introduces each film, and each screening is followed by a substantive on-stage Q&A discussion among filmmakers, critics and the audience. In addition to the screenings, the festival hosts a number of academic panel discussions featuring filmmaker guests, scholars and students. The mission of Roger Ebert’s Film Festival is to praise films, genres and formats that have been overlooked. -

‘Tortured’ reasoning for snubbing ‘Zero’? By Christy Lemire January 16, 2013 A few weeks ago, “Zero Dark Thirty” seemed well on its way to capturing the Academy Award for best picture. It was winning early critic awards and gaining the kind of momentum a movie needs to win Hollywood’s biggest prize. Much was made about the authenticity of the film by director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal, who used insider access to tell the sweeping, meticulously detailed story of the decade-long search for Osama bin Laden. Then last week, “Zero Dark Thirty” won five Academy Award nominations, including for best picture, and this past weekend, it was No. 1 at the domestic box office with a gross of nearly $25 million. Yet what may be the film’s biggest challenge in the pursuit of Oscar glory is playing out from Hollywood to Washington as debate mounts over the film’s accuracy in its depiction of what some regard as torture and whether the movie itself endorses the use of torture. Lawmakers are also investigating whether the CIA gave Ms. Bigelow and Mr. Boal false information as to whether enhanced-interrogation tactics led directly to the 2011 capture and killing of the al Qaeda leader in Pakistan. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences failed to nominate Ms. Bigelow for director, and on Sunday night, “Zero Dark Thirty” received only one Golden Globe award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — for best actress Jessica Chastain’s portrayal of a driven CIA operative. Could congressional scrutiny over such an emotionally charged issue as alleged torture be affecting the film’s awards momentum? Will the bicoastal backlash ultimately prevent the film from winning the best picture award when the Oscars are presented on Feb. -

POPULISM IN A DIVIDED AMERICA Stephen Richardson “It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states. We are, and always will be, the United States of America.” — Former President Barack Obama’s 2008 Victory Speech Former President Barack Obama most likely did not foresee how ironic this quote would become when he took the stage in Chicago after his historic 2008 election. Americans are now more divided and polarized than he could have imagined. Cultural divisions and political partisanship have been reaching fever-pitch, as a wave of populism has swept through Europe and the United States, fanning fears of demagoguery. With Brexit in the United Kingdom, and President Trump’s shocking victory in the US, many mainstream observers fear that fascism is both spreading through and threatening liberal democracies.1 1 Sheri Berman, “Populism is not Fascism: But it Could Be a Harbinger.” Foreign Affairs, December, 2016, 39. paideia Fascism is profoundly different than populism, and attempts to claim that recent events equate to fascism are exaggerated and incorrect. -

Think about how much the entertainment industry has changed since the Press Club introduced these awards in 2008. Arnold Schwarzenegger was our governor, not a Terminator. Netflix sent you DVDs in the mail. The iPhone was one year old. Fast forward to today and the explosion of technology and content that is changing our lives and keeping journalists busy across the globe. Entertainment journalism has changed as well, with all of us taking a much harder look at how societal issues influence Hollywood, from workplace equality and diversity to coverage of political events, the impact of social media and U.S.-China rela- tions. Your Press Club has thrived amid all this. Participation is way up, with more Chris Palmeri than 600 dues-paying members. The National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards have grown and changed as well. Tonight we’re in a ballroom in the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, but in 2008 the awards took place in the Steve Allen Theater, the Press Club’s old home in East Hollywood. That building has since been torn down. Our first event in 2008 featured a cocktail party with no host and only 111 entries in the competition. -

Mannella Queen’s University Smith School of Business Within the modern era, personal ideology and political affiliation, in particular, have become absolutely integral components of social identity. In-group bias, and out-group prejudice based on political stance are currently more palpable than biases regarding race, religion, and other facets of personal identity (Iyengar and Westwood, 2015). It simply goes unquestioned that the bipartisan values one holds serve as an all- encompassing test of character and must be subject to incessant scrutiny and questioning, with little nuance or restraint (Peterson et al., 2017). Moreover, close personal relations across party lines have become a rarity, with people increasingly disassociating themselves from those of whom support non-partisan groups (Huber and Malhotra, 2017; Iyengar, Konitzer, and Tedin, 2018; Iyengar and Westwood, 2015; Westwood et al., 2017; Peterson et al., 2017). Rather than working to solve issues collectively, the pressures to either wholly reject or accept ideas have become overwhelming, causing people to be avoidant and exceedingly distrustful of oppositional figures (Rowson, 2020). Suffice it to say, the parameters for amiable discourse are slimming, even though the issues we universally face are nonetheless worsening. There is no singular cause for this growing polarization; it is truly a multivalent problem. However, exogenous forces such as social media do play a significant role. Recently, a movement known as "The Intellectual Dark-Web" has taken the academic sphere within these virtual networks by storm. Furthermore, this group has indoctrinated millions of users in the last decade, effectively strengthening the already divided population. -
