Wednesday, March 2 BLM / Ironwood National Monument – Volunteer Work Hike Level C Work Hike Hike Leader: Gary Borax, [email protected], 240-2559 Depart from the Highlands at 6:45am and from Dove Mountain Park at 7:00am – Approx Return: 3:00pm We will meet up with other Volunteers at the Marana Airport at 7:30am or at Pump Station and Avra Valley Roads at 7:45am. We will be picking up a large dumped trash deposit as well as scattered trash about a quarter mile east off of Pump Station Road where we will park. It should be noted that in order to Volunteer for BLM Work Projects, you need to have a “2015 Volunteer Service Agreement – Natural & Cultural Resources” Form completed and on file with BLM prior to the work day. Friday March 4 Bog Springs, Kent Springs Loop with Major Deviations Madera Canyon Level B+, 5.5 miles, 2200’ elevation gain Hike Contact: Richard Muzzy 520 284 2627 or [email protected] Depart 7:00 AM Estimated time of return 4:00 PM The Bog Springs Kent Springs Loop is an enchanting hike of 5.4 miles with a 2000’ elevation gain while hiking up and down over 3 miles on steep rocky old jeep roads. On this revised hike we will only be hiking .5 miles on a jeep road, but our elevation gain will be an additional 200’. When we reach Kent Spring we hike .5 miles up the Four Spring Trail. This is where we gain the extra 200’. We will then leave the Four Spring Trail and follow a route for .4 miles down to Rogers Rock, where we will have lunch. To do this variation of the hike we will leave a car at the Baldy / Super Trail TH before we hike. Car Pool Fee is $5.00 and bring lunch, snacks and plenty of water. and/or Friday, March 4 Rogers Rock via the Supertrail ... meet the above group for lunch Level C, under 5 miles, about 1100’ of elevation Hike Contact: Gary Borax [email protected] 240-2559 Depart DM Park at 8:00 am, estimated time of return 4:00 pm This shorter, easier trek to Rogers Rock offers nice hiking plus venturing off trail to Rogers Rock, a great spot to view the Green Valley area ... and maybe hear or see an Elegant Trogan. Car Pool fee is $5.00 plus bring lunch, snacks and plenty of water. SUNDAY, MARCH 6 Make sure you remember the SUMMIT HUT HIKER APPRECIATION NIGHT, - from 5 to 7 pm. Thursday, March 10 Rincon Mountains - Douglas Springs Trail to Bridal Wreath Falls Level B, 5.8 miles, 1050 elevation change Hike Contact: Pete Andersen, [email protected], 425-308-7854 Depart DM Park @ 7:00 AM, Return around 3:00 PM Trailhead: End of Speedway (no restrooms) The Douglas Springs Trail is one of two long routes giving access to the west side of the Rincon Mountains from Tucson - the other is the Tanque Verde Ridge Trail. Beginning in the lowland mesquite thick forest with cacti and ocotillos, the trail soon climbs up small canyons, through open grasslands, and into mid-elevation oak-pinon-juniper woodlands, providing a variety of scenery and birdlife. We will be hiking 3 miles up the trail to Bridal Wreath Falls with an option of hiking another 0.6 miles to Ernie’s Falls at the park boundary. Bring water, snacks and lunch. Carpool fee is $3.00 Friday, March 11 Hike a private Hiking Trail in the Tortolitas adjacent to Wild Burro Canyon Pace: Moderate - Level C+ Hike, 2.25 miles, Hike Contact: Gary Borax, [email protected], 240-2559 / Grace Duffy Depart from Dove Mountain Park at 8:00am - Est time of return 1:00pm This is a hike on a private hiking trail. At the start of the hike we will pass within a few feet of a very large Crested Saguaro. The last time Gary hiked the trail, 5+ years ago the Crested Saguaro was large and healthy, but you never know. We will have lunch at the top of the loop overlooking the Alamo Spring Trail and Wild Burro Canyon. Since the trail was rebuilt last year, it should be in excellent shape. We can only take the first 12 hikers that sign-up. If you want to hike the "Canyon View Pass" Loop, you better sign-up ASAP. Bring water, snacks and lunch Saturday, March 12 Hike the Monument Please read through the hike descriptions below to see which hike best fits your ability. To sign up for any of these hikes – simply send an email message to [email protected] or call and leave a message at 520-628-2092. The number of participants of each hike is limited, sign up early! Please specify which hike you would like to sign up for, the number of people you are bringing, and whether or not you have a high-clearance vehicle and are willing to drive to the hike starting point. Please remember to dress in layers, appropriate for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, hat, and sunscreen, bring water, snacks, lunch, and your camera. There are no restrooms or other facilities. Roads are not maintained. All hikes will meet up at the Marana Airport on Avra Valley Road at 8:00 am on Saturday, March 12th. We expect to be done hiking no later than 2 pm and to return to the airport by 3 pm. The Marana Airport is located 5 miles West of I-10 and the Avra Valley Road exit. 1. Hike to Walcott Saddle and circumnavigate Walcott Peak (by Ragged Top) Adventure Hike – moderate to difficult – cross country/no trail with loose and uneven footing – 3+ miles with a 600ʹ accumulated elevation gain. High clearance vehicles recommended. Hike leaders are Gary Borax and Jim Phillips. When you look at Ragged Top from the east, the Peak immediately south of Ragged Top is Walcott Peak and it’s connected to Ragged Top via Walcott Saddle. The BLM requests that hikers refrain from hiking above Walcott Saddle and summiting Ragged Top from January 1 through April 30 during the Bighorn Sheep lambing season. On this hike we will hike up to Walcott Saddle from the base of Ragged Top. We will continue on down from the Saddle as we circle Walcott Peak. On this trek you will see that Walcott Peak is surrounded via a series of smaller lower peaks. Last year on this hike we had several Big Horn sheep and lambs make an appearance! 2. Waterman Mountains Elephant Trees - This hike covers about 3.5 miles round trip, walking on loose rocks in steep terrain. Accumulated elevation gain is about 650 ft. High-clearance vehicles are required. Drew Milsom (U of A) is leading this hike accompanied by Jim Avramis (Friends of Ironwood Forest). Moderate to slightly difficult hike following old steep mining road in the Waterman Mountains to find E.T. (Elephant Trees) and other botanical fun. There are lots of great plants to discuss along the way, as well as opportunities to view the unique geology of the mountains. 3. Nature Hike at base of Ragged Top – Ries Lindley will be leading this hike. Easy paced 3 mile (or so) hike along the norther bajada of Ragged Top. Join Ries, a fabulous naturalist and botanist for this easy paced hike while exploring the wonders of the Ironwood Forest. Botanical discussions will be featured as part of this family-oriented nature hike. Worth repeating: Please specify which hike you would like to sign up for, the number of people you are bringing, and whether or not you have a high-clearance vehicle and are willing to drive to the hike starting point. All hikes will meet up at the Marana Airport on Avra Valley Road at 8:00 am on Saturday, March 12th. We expect to be done hiking no later than 2 pm and to return to the airport by 3 pm.
