Krishnan, born and brought up in Urakam, Cherpu Panchayath, , acknowledging his unparalleled enthusiastic contributions to scientific research, chemical education, teaching of high school students, college students, and teachers studying for their Master’s degree, enriching K-6 children and their parents with hands-on science activities, enhancing moulding of master teachers by offering enrichment courses, and communicating the wonders of science to the public through his “Magic of Chemistry” demonstration shows for more than four decades. The celebration, “Garimâ Pranathi” or “Saluting the Greatness of a Teacher” is sheduled for Saturday, 17th January, 2015 at Kausthubham Auditorium, Thrissur. Dr. Krishnan has received more than forty five awards, mostly in the United States. Of these, it is our pleasure to note that Dr. Krishnan was the first Indian to receive 4 National Awards of USA. Dr. Krishnan’s contributions were recognized in 1984 by the United States Government, which confered on him its highest teaching award, the “Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching” from Ronald Reagan, the then President of the United States. Dr. Krishnan’s main focus on teaching is to inspire students of all age groups through motivational talks and intellectually challenging demonstrations to kindle curiosity and nurture enthusiasm for excellence in learning. Dr. Krishnan’s approach to communicating science to the public was through his “Magic of Chemistry” demonstration shows. The New York State Regents Chemistry syllabus which Dr. Krishnan helped to develop in the late seventies is currently active. Dr. Krishnan’s publications include 70 or more research publications in peer reviewed international journals, several book chapters, and two children’s hands-on science activities books. We are planning to bestow Dr. Krishnan a public award, “Brihaspathi” for his great contributions to science, and science education for the whole spectrum of public by serving as a High School Teacher, University Professor, and Communicator of Science to the public. The planned activities are in order 1) an educational seminar with men of eminence, 2) an exploration into the teaching and research career of Dr. Krishnan, 3) honouring the Stalwart, 4) a felicitation session, and 5) an entertainment ensemble. We request with pleasure your august presence, hearty co-operation, and prayers for the successful completion of this “education with fun” programme. With regards and respect, On behalf of Dr. C. V. Dr. Chirakkal V. Krishnan Chirakkal V. Krishnan, the third child among five of Chirakkal Variyam Parvathy Varasyar and Kizhakke Wariam Krishna Warrier, was born at Urakam, Cherpu Panchayath, Thrissur District, Kerala in 1937. While studying at C. N. N. Boys High School, Cherpu, he was also fulfilling temple associated duties of his family at Urakam Ammathiruvadi Temple and Kidakulangara Sree Krishna Temple. He studied Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics for Intermediate at St. Thomas College, Thrissur and B. Sc. degree course in Chemistry at Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur. He passed with First Class in High School and both the Colleges. He was the “valedictorian” from his high school. While working as a Scientist at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre after completing one year as a first batch trainee of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Training School, he completed his Master of Science and Ph. D. in Physical Chemistry from Bombay University. He was the recipient of Ratanji Ranchhodji Desai Gold Medal for the best Ph. D. thesis. In 1967 he left for Stony Brook University, New York, for higher studies. In New York, as a teacher at East Islip High School and in various capacities such as Adjunct Associate Professor, Professor, and Director of Chemical Education Resource Centre at Stony Brook University he taught Chemistry for 32 years for high school students, undergraduates, and teachers studying for their Master’s Degree. Throughout this period, he had the good fortune to carry out basic research at Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Stony Brook Technology and Applied Research Centre (as Senior Research Scientist) in four major fields that include aqueous solution thermodynamics, photochemistry related to solar energy, biological spatiotemporal oscillations, and biomedical applications related to cancer. During the last few years he had collaborative research programs at Garnett McKeen Laboratory (as Vice President for Research) and at Amala Cancer Research Centre at Thrissur on mitochondrial energy production and radiation protection effects of certain metal complexes. Dr. Krishnan has shown his mettle in the field of research by having 70 or more research publications in peer reviewed international journals, several book chapters, and two science books for children. Dr. Krishnan was the first Indian to receive 4 United States National Awards. His contributions were recognized in 1984 by the United States government, which conferred on him its highest teaching award, the “Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching” from Ronald Reagan, then President of the United States. The citation said he was being so honoured for “embodying excellence in teaching, for devotion to the learning needs of students, and for upholding the high standards that exemplify American education at its finest.” He earned it at the age of 47, a comparatively young age in academic terms for such an honor. Dr. Krishnan’s three other National Awards include: the 1989 “National Catalyst Award” for being the best chemistry teacher in the United States and Canada, the 1984 American Chemical Society “Nichols Foundation Chemistry Teacher Award” for inspiring chemistry teaching, and “The American Teacher Award,” sponsored by the Walt Disney Company, given to outstanding teachers in1992. The Chemistry syllabus followed in the schools of New York State for the last three decades and a half was formulated by a 3 member panel of experts including Dr. Krishnan. His own methodology “Magic of Chemistry” staged in more than 800 venues across United States has made learning science enjoyable and be appreciated by thousands of students, teachers, and the general public. Dr. Krishnan has founded a charitable facility, “Sopaanam”, or “Stepping Stone to Divinity” by way of education in Cherpu, spending money from his own savings from teaching career and through very modest living. The motto of this institution is “Education through Fun”. A Chemistry lab, a Physics lab, a Computer lab, a Professional Library, and an Indoor Games facility are parts of the set-up here. Apart from this, there are provisions for teaching of Kerala art-forms, music and dance, different languages, health awareness campaigns, medical camps, yoga, and literary activities. All these activities are provided free to students and the public. Dr. Krishnan, science educator par excellence, continues to serve both the countries, and the United States with equal passion and fervor. tUm. s_©-an≥, Fkv. lkntbm : tÃmWn {_q°v bqWn-th-gvkn-‰n-bnse sIankv{Sn s{]m^-k¿, AtX bqWn-th-gvkn-‰n-bnse Kth-jW hn`mKw sshkv {]kn-U‚v, Kth-jW {][m\n, ck-X-{¥-hn-`m-K-Ønse A≤y-£≥, \yqtbm¿°nse {_q°v slh¨ \mj-W¬ em_-d-´-dn-bpsS h‡m-hv, hnhn[ imkv{X {]kn-≤o-I-c-W-ß-fnse ]{Xm-[-n]-k-anXn AwKw, \mt\m sa‰o-cn-b-ens\ Ipdn®pw t]mfn-a-dn-s\-Ip-dn®pw 500 ¬ A[nIw {]kn-≤o-I-c-W-߃ \S-Øn-bn-´p≠v Cu ssN\ kztZ-in.
