THE FERRIS STATE SERIES: The Saints and Bulldogs will play for the eighth and ninth times when the two teams meet in Big Rapids this weekend and Ferris State has the upper hand in the series. The Bulldogs swept the Saints in Canton to open the 2011-12 campaign, 4-2 and 5-1 and lead the all-time series 6-1-0. The lone Saint win was a 5-4 victory in the Catamount Classic at Vermont in 2008. Ferris State is 3-0-0 on home ice against the Saints, sweeping a series in 2009-10 4-2 and 3-0.

SLU AND THE WCHA: The Ferris State series are the only games on the Saint schedule this season against the WCHA and the first against a WCHA team since a 2010 home series against Michigan Tech. Ferris State is in its first season in the new WCHA after the demise of the CCHA at the end of last season. Ferris State joins former CCHA members Bowling Green, Lake Superior State, Northern Michigan and Alaska, Alabama Huntsville (independent last year) and former WCHA members Alaska Anchorage, Bemidji State, Michigan Tech and Minnesota State to make up the new WCHA.

BROTHER ACTS: The arrival of gives the Saints a brother act in the lineup for the ninth straight season and bodes well for older brother Greg. Brothers George and Gunnar Hughes played together for the Saints in 2012-13 and 2011-12, Sean and Kyle Flanagan and Pat and Matt Raley were teammates in 2010-11, Derek and Jared Keller played together from 2007-08 to 2009-10, and Mark and Paul Wallmann played for the Saints from 2004-05 to 2006-07. Other brother acts who have played together for the Saints have included the Lappins...Pete and Tim from 1984-85 to 1988-89 and Mike and Chris in 1990-91 and 1991-92, the Harneys, Jake and Justin from 1996-00, the Muir twins, Mike and Sean from 1998-02, plus Eric and Martin Lacroix in the 1990s, Bill and Mike Gerrie and Dean and Dick Popiel in the . The good news for Greg Carey? In five of the brother pairings since 1987, one has been an All America...giving him a good chance to repeat. Pete Lappin was a two-time All America, Mike Lappin earned All America as a senior as did Justin Harney, Sean Flanagan and George Hughes. FIRST ONE: While Greg Carey now has 68 career goals, Saturday’s empty netter against Maine was the first empty net goal of his collegiate career...and matches the of empty net goals scored in each of the last two seasons by the Saints. Kyle Essery scored one against Cornell last season and Gunnar Hughes had one in February of 2012 as the Saints scored just one ENG in each of those campaigns. They scored four in the 2010-11 campaign with Carey getting an assist on Aaron Bogosian’s empty netter against Sacred Heart.

NHL CONNECTIONS: Former Saint Rich Peverley (Boston Bruins) and Brandon Bollig () were the only Saints playing in the NHL last season with a number of players playing in the AHL, ECHL or other professional leagues. A host of former players hold significant positions in the NHL. Former goaltender Jacques Martin was the head coach of the Canadiens and is currently an assistant at Pittsburgh. Ex-defenseman Randy Sexton, former GM at Ottawa and Florida, is now with Pittsburgh in player development.. , who has a long history of management success in the NHL, was in charge of the search for Martin’s replacement as GM in Florida, is the Panthers’ Alternate Governor and is a member of the NHL Hall of Fame. Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero is a former Saint captain. Murray Cawker is Director of Hockey Operations for the Florida Panthers, Paul Castron is Director of Amateur Scouting for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Eric LaCroix is Director of Hockey Operations for the , Mike Barnett is Director of US Scouting for the and is a former Pheonix Coyotes GM, Mike Mudd is president of the Worcester Sharks, Mark Leach is a scout for the Detroit Red Wings, and Mark Bonneau is a vice president with the . Teddy Dent is the coach of the Chicago’s top minor league club in Rockford. Former Saint player Jamie Baker, who had a 10-year NHL career, is the color commentator and SLU graduate Dan Rousanowsky is the play-by-play announcer for the San Jose Sharks. Mike Madill retired as a player last year and was named coach of the Las Vegas team in the ECHL. Peverley, now in Dallas, became the first Saint to have his name en- graved on the Stlanley Cup as a playing member of the championship team when the Bruins won the cup in June. He attended Ursuline High School and played , helping his team to a state championship. 7 • Gavin Bayreuther • Fr. • Defenseman • 6-1 • 195 • Canaan, NH • Fargo (USHL): A defenseman who was named to the USHL All Rookie team while playing for the Fargo Force, Gavin Bayreuther scored nine goals and had 24 assists while helping his team to the Western Conference championship. He earned All New England first team honors in both hockey and lacrosse while playing for the Holderness School in 2012 and also played soccer for Holderness. He is the son of John and Jessica Bayreuther. 2013-14: Gavin had a goal in each of the Maine games and assisted on the game winner in game one. Kevin was a four-year regular for the Saints and played in 102 career games, he was part of the 1982 team which made the Saints’ first ECAC playoff appearance in eight years. Alex scored 43 points in 57 games for the Surrey Eagles in the British Columbia Hockey League prior to joining the Saints The MVP at Choate-Rosemary Hall in 2009, he had 20 goals and 23 assists for Surrey. 2012- 13: Made his collegiate debut at Western Michigan...he scored his first collegiate point with an assist at Northeastern...he was injured in the Colgate game returned to action against Vermont. 10 • Greg Carey • Sr. • Forward • 5-11 • 195 • Hamilton, ON • Burlington (OJHL) Greg Carey set the OJHL goal scoring record playing for the in junior hockey with 72 goals in 48 games. He also had 42 assists for 114 points and finished the year with a plus-59 plus/minus rating. He had 27 power play goals, four shorthanders and seven game winning goals. The son of Alan and Debra Carey, he was team captain for the Cougars and was a member of Team Canada East and the CCHL All Star Team. He is a graduate of St. Thomas More Secondary School. 2010-11: Carey had one of the out- standing rookie seasons in program history as he was the first Saint freshman to lead the team in scoring since Paul Castron in 1982 and had the second best freshman goal total with 23, the most for a rookie since Brandon Dietrich had 20 in 1998-99 and second only to Neale Langill’s 28 in 1951-52. Carey was named to the ECAC All Rookie Team, was the Saint team Rookie of the Year and earned ECAC Rookie of the Week honors six times. He had multiple point games 10 times and multiple goal games eight times. He scored his first collegiate goal as part of a hat trick against Western Michigan on Oct. 23 at Appleton Arena. He had a four-point night with two goals and two assists in a 6-0 win at Michigan Tech and had five goals and an assist in the playoffs. He scored 10 power play goals and had three game winning goals. He was fourth nationally in points per game bya rookie at 1.00 and was tied for second in rookie goal scoring nationally. 2011-12:Carey shared the scoring lead for the Saints as a sophomore and will head into his junior season with 77 points, the most since Brandon Dietrich put up 80 in his two seasons from 1998-2000. Carey led the team in goals and was second in assists and had five power play goals and three game winners. He also assisted on two game winning goals. He scored the winner at Princeton, against Yale in overtime at Yale and Quinnipiac at home. Of his 15 goals, 12 came from January on and he had four two-goal games. He was named ECAC Player of the Week Feb. 14 after scoring three goals and assisting on two others in a sweep of Quinnipac and Princeton. He ended the year on a eight-game scoring streak and had a five-game streak in December and January. He scored in 23 of 36 including nine of his last 10. 2012-13: The first junior to earn All America honors since Pete Lappin and Hank Lam- mens in 1997 and the first junior in program history to be a Hobey Baker Award finalist, Greg Carey led the nation in goals scored with 28 and in power play goals with 14. He joins a select group of players who have led the team in scoring in three straight seasons and will bid to become the first four-time scoring leader in program history. He was a first-team All ECAC selection after scoring 28 goals and 23 assists for 51 points including a league leading 30 points in 22 games on 18 goals and 12 assists. He scored six game winning goals. He heads into his senior season with 66 career goals, just five out of the top ten in program history. He was named ECAC and national Player of the Month for the month of February 2013. 2013-14: Had a five point weekend in the sweep of Maine, scoring two and assisting on two in Saturday’s 5-2 win. He also assisted on the first official goal of the season. Earned ECAC Player of the Week for the second time in his career. His empty net goal to end game two was the first of his career. He was a high honors graduate at Advanced Technology Academy and played for the Boston Junior Bruins on an Empire JHL championship team prior to his season with Camrose. The son of Brian and Lynn McMullan, he intends to major in economics and Spanish. He is the first player in program history from Las Vegas. 2012-13: Made his collegiate debut in game two of the Western Michigan series and has played in 14 games as a rookie. A graduate of Taft and the hockey team MVP in 2011, he also played lacrosse in prep school. The son of Kevin and Elaine McGovern he intends to major in economics. His father played collegiate hockey against the Saints at Concordia in Montreal. 2012-13: The Saint team Rookie of the Year, Sean played in all 38 games, recording eight assists in 2012-13. He scored his first career point in a 5-2 win at Northeastern and assisted on a pair of game-winning goals including the winner in the RIT game which was the 1000th win in program history. He also had an assist in a 2-1 win at nationally top-ranked Quinnipiac in February. 2013-14: Played in both games in the Maine series. He had 14 goals and six assists and was captain of the Indiana Ice. The son of Woodruff and Wanda Hudson, he attended Milton Academy and was part of the 2011 New England Championship team. He will start his collegiate career with the 2013-14 season and will have four years of eligibility. He scored 69 points in 46 games between Hamilton and Toronto in the OHL in his final season of junior hockey with 33 goals and 36 assists. 17 • Drew Smolcynski • Fr. • Forward • 5-8 • 173 • Hatfield, PA• Chicago (USHL)A teammate of Woody Hudson on both the Chica- go Steel and Indiana Ice, Drew Smolcynski combined for 20 goals and 25 assists between the two teams a year ago. An assitant cap- tain for the Ice, he scored 15 goals and had 28 points in 44 games in Indianapolis. He had seven power play goals, three shorthanders and two game winners in 65 games. Drew played soccer and golf and earned rookie of the year honors in hockey at the Gunnery. The son of Andrwe and Patricia Smolcynski, he was an honor roll student throughout high school.

He also played lacrosse in high school, helping his team to a state title. 2011-12: Patrick had a solid rookie season for the Saints, playing in 35 of 36 games and finishing his first collegiate season with six goals and five assists for 11 points. MAINE SERIES PRODUCES AWARDS: For the second straight season a sweep of Maine has delivered ECAC Goaltender of the Week and ECAC Player of the Week awards for the Saints. Last year Kyle Flanagan was the Player of the Week and Matt Weninger was the Goaltender of the Week after a 5-0, 5-1 series sweep in Orono. Greg Carey earned Player of the Week after a two goal, three assist weekend, and Weninger was again Goaltender of the Week, stopping 58 of 61 shots in the 3-1 and 5-2 wins. 19 • Jeremy Wick •Sr. • Forward • 5-10 • 185 • Grand Valley, ON/Georgetown (OJHL) A 40-goal scorer for the Jr. A team, Jeremy Wick is an outstanding athlete who was also MVP of his high school football and rugby teams. He had 78 points on 40 goals and 38 assists for a Georgetown team which finished third in the OJHL. He was an alternate captain for the Raiders. The son of Tony and Sylvia Wick, he graduated from Westside Secondary School. 2010-11: A hard-hitting wing, Jeremy Wick played in 34 games for the Saints as a rookie and scored two goals and assisted on three others. He scored his first collegiate goal in a 3-0 home win over Cornell and scored his first collegiate game winner in a 4-1 win over Colgate the next night. He scored his first career playoff point in game two at Princeton, setting up the game winner in a 3-2 win. 2011-12: Jeremy played in 32 games for the Saints as a sophomore and scored a goal with five assists. The goal was part of a comeback from three down at Brown to win 5-3. He assisted on the game winning goal in a 4-3 win over Minnesota State. 2012-13: Jeremy had a career year for the Saints as a junior and was named the Saint Most Improved Player at the end of the season. Named an assistant captain partway through the year, he scored 14 goals and assisted on 14 others, both career highs and had six power play goals and three game winners. He scored 11 goals and had 21 points in 22 league games. He scored the game winner in overtime at Westertn Michigan, had the winner in a 3-2 win at Princeton and in game one of the playoffs against Colgate.. He had assist on the game winners at Maine, at Dartmouth and against Harvard. 23 • Riley Austin • Sr. • Defenseman • 6-2 • 205 • Bobcaygeon, ON/Lindsay (OJHL) A solid physical defenseman, Riley Austin scored 11 goals and had 31 assists for 42 points for the Lindsay Muskiesin his final junior season. He was the Defenseman of the Year for the Muskies and played in the CCHL/CJHL All Star game. The son of Steve and Sheree Austin, Riley was Muskies Rookie of the Year in 2008-09. He attended Fenelon Falls Secondary School and was an honor student. He also played football and was rookie of the year in 2005-06 and offensively MVP in 2006-07.2010-11: Riley played in 14 games for the Saints as a rookie, scoring his first collegiate goal in a 5-2 win at Sacred Heart. He was credited with his first collegiate assist in a 3-3 tie with Western Michigan and had an assist in a 3-2 home upset of second-ranked Yale in February. 2011-12: Riley played in 30 of 36 for the Saints as a sophomore and had two goals and five assists for seven points. One of his two goals came on the power play as he scored the Saints’ lone goal at Harvard. He also had a goal in a 6-6 tie with Merrimack at the Ledyard Bank Classic. He assisted on the game winning goal in a 2-1 win at Vermont. 2012-13: Riley played in 35 of 38 for the Saints in his junior season, finishing the year with two goals and two assists including one game winner. He was unable to play for the Big Green due to injury and played for the Tri-City Storm of the USHL last season. He scored 22 goals and had 32 assists in 42 games and was plus-10 in the plus/minus ratings for the Storm. He attended Governor’s Academy where he also played lacrosse and football. He is the son of Robert and Mary Ward. 2013-14: Brian Ward had an impressive debut for the Saints, scoring a goal in each game including the game-winner in Saturday’s 5-2 victory. 25 • Chris Martin • Jr. • Forward • 6-1 • 198 • Ottawa, ONT • Indiana (USHL) Chris Martin joined the Saint program after playing junior hockey for the Indiana Ice in the USHL, helping his team to a third place finish in the Eastern Division. He scored 12 goals and had 11 assists and was plus-five in 53 games, scoring three power play goals and two short handed goals along with a game winner. He had six goals and four assists in 40 games with the Ice in 2009-10. A physical player with good speed and a hard shot, he has the ability to play either forward or defense. 2011-12: The Saint nominee for ECAC Rookie of the Year, Chris Martin finished his first collegiate season with 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points, good for third on the team in scoring. He had three power play goals among his 10 and had a pair of assists on game-winning goals, the home win over Quinnipiac and a home win against Princeton. He had nine power play points with three goals and six assists and tied for second overall among all ECAC rookies in scoring.He was ECAC Rookie of the Week Nov. 22 after scoring two goals against Harvard. 2012-13: While he did not quite reach his rookie season scoring totals, Chris Martin had a solid sophomore season for the Saints with seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points in 38 games. He was playoffs MVP in 2008-09 for Georgetown. The son of Rick and Yvonne Essery, Kyle graduated from Loyola Catholic Secondary School and ran track and field and cross country in addition to playing . 2010-11: Kyle was one of four Saint players to appear in all 40 games in the 2010-11 sea- son and was one of the heroes of a first-round playoff series victory at Princeton, scoring the game-winning goal in both game two and three wins. He finished his rookie season with six goals and two assists and was also and outstanding two-way player. He was effective in the faceoff circle and had two power play goals. 2011-12: Essery played in every game for the Saints for a second straight season and finished his sophomore campaign with seven goals and five assists. An outstanding penalty killer and strong on faceoffs, four of Essery’s five goals came on the power play and he had two game winners. He was among the team leaders with 35 blocked shots. He scored game winners against Michigan Tech and Brown and assisted on the game winner at Dartmouth which gave the Saints first-round home ice. 2012-13: The Saint captain for the 2013-14 season, Kyle Essery has played in every game in his first three years in the program. He scored seven goals and had four assists as a junior, matching his sophomore goal output. He was among the league leaders in short- handed points with three on two goals and an assist. His shorthanders came at Yale and against RIT. He scored the game winning goal in the 4-3 win over RIT which was the 1,000th win in program history. He also assisted on the game winner in a 4-2 playoff win over Colgate. 2013-14: Kyle turned in two solid efforts in the Maine series and was outstanding on the penalty kill as the Saints held Maine to one goal in nine tries. Gunnar, a 6-1, 200 pound forward, had 15 goals and 11 assists for 26 points in 57 games for the Blackhawks, scoring five shorthanded goals and a pair of game winners. He was the Rookie of the Year for the Blackhawks.Gunnar attended the Salisbury School and intends to major in economics at St. Lawrence. 2011-12: Gunnar had a solid rookie campaign for the Saints, playing in 34 of 36 games and scoring four goals to go with six assists. Two of his four goals were game winners...the home victory over Harvard and in game one against Minnesota State. The Harvard goal was his first colleigate goal. He played in 32 straight after sitting out the second weekend of the year. He had a trio of two point games.2012-13: An assis- tant captain for the Saints as a junior, Gunnar is coming off a strong sophomore season in which he was the sixth leading scorer with 23 points on seven goals and 16 assists. He scored two game winners and assisted on three others and had two power play goals and three assists. The Saints were 6-1-0 in the seven games in which he scored a goal and he scored points in 19 of 38 appearances. 2013-14: Gunnar earned his first point of the season with an assist on Brian Ward’s game winner in game two, stealing the puck along the side board and hitting Ward in stride. The son of Brian and Andrea Hills, his father was a two-time All America and Hobey Baker Award finalist at Bowling Green and is now the associate head coach at RIT.

29 • Kyle MacDonald • So • Goaltender • 6-0 • 175 • Hanover, MA • Bay State (EJHL) The Boston Herald Goalie of the Year and a three-time Catholic Conference All Star while playing at Xaverian Brothers High School, Kyle MacDonald also played junior hockey for the Bay State Breakers in the EJHL. While he was limited to five games by injury in his final junior season, compiling a 2.59 goals against average and a .919 save percentage, he had a 2.63 goals against average, a .927 save percentage and went 10-7-1 in 20 games in 2010-11 for the Breakers. He led his high school team to three Super 8 appear- ances, the first in school history, was was captain of the Eastern Massachusetts champion baseball team as a senior. He is the son of Andy and Mary Beth MacDonald. 2012-13: Kyle MacDonald played in three games in a backup role as a rookie and will push for more playing time in his sophomore season. He had a 4.45 goals againstt average in 40:13 of ice time and had a .769 save percent- age. He was 12-9 in 24 appearances for Springfield in 2011-12 with a 2.75 goals against average. He was a 2013 NAHL Top Prospect invittee. THe son of Erica Parks, he was a honors student in high school. 34 • Matt Weninger • Sr. • Goaltender • 6-0 • 175 • Lethbridge, AL/Flin Flon (SJHL) The goaltender for the first place SJHL North Division Flin Flon Bombers, Matt Weninger was the Bombers’ MVP and a three star winner in 2009-10. He was the Kindersley Kippers 2007-08 Rookie of the Year and played in the SJHL All Star game. He compiled a 29-14-2 record last season with a 2.39 goals against average and a .925 save percentage. The son of Mark and Wendy Weninger, Matt also played baseball in high school. His cousins David and Todd both tended goal for Michigan Tech University and David played professionally for the Wilkes-Barre-Scranton Penguins in the AHL. 2010-11: Matt Weninger had an outstanding rookie season for the Saints, compiling a 2.65 goals against average with a .913 save percentage. He made 37 saves in his first collegiate appearance, a 1-1 tie at Minnesota State. He earned his first win with 29 saves in a 3-0 win over Cornell at Appleton Arena and established a career high for saves with 48 in a 2-1 win at Princeton which clinched a Saint victory in the opening round of the playoffs. He had 32 saves in a 2-1 win at then second-ranked New Hampshire and recorded his second shutout of the season with a 6-0 win at Michigan Tech. The Saints scored two goals or less in 18 of his 28 starts. He was ECAC Goaltender of the Week twice and ECAC Rookie of the Week twice. 2011-12: Matt Weninger was the go-to guy for the Saints in goal as a sophomore as he started 32 of 36 games and 21 of 22 ECAC league contests. He was a team captain, named to the Team East Canada Jr. All Star Game, the Team Canada Selects and was selected for the OPHL All Star game. He was team MVP after scoring 25 goals with 55 assists in 48 games and finishing the year with a plus-33 plus/minus rating. The son of Thomas and Donna Baker, he attended Bayview Glen School and was an honor student all four years, winning the Waterloo University Math Competition. He was also high school baseball MVP. 2010-11: Justin Baker had a strong rookie season for the Saints as a defenseman, playing in 36 of 40 games. He scored two goals and assisted on 10 others for a dozen points. He scored his first collegiate points in a 3-0 home win over Cornell, getting both his first collegiate goal and first collegiate assist in that game. He scored his first career post-season point in game one of the Princeton series. 2011-12: Justin had a strong fin- ish to his sophomore season with all three of his goals and three assists all coming in the month of Feburary as the Saints won six of eight for the month. He scored his first goal of the year in a 4-3 win over Quinnipiac. He also scored goals against Colgate and Cornell in a home split. He had the game winner against Colgate and assisted on the game winner against Clarkson at Lake Placid. 2012-13: Justin was in the top ten overall in the ECAC in assists with 21, third in power play points with 18 and tied for fourth in scoring among ECAC defenders in a big junior season.
