I am so saddened by the loss of our beloved Queen of Soul, Aretha. She has always been my favorite and the greatest singer I’ve ever heard. Following a disappointing series of albums, Franklin was ready to add some ’80s flair to her reper- toire. First up: a scene-stealing cameo in 1980’s The Blues Broth- ers. Then, in 1982, after signing to Arista Records, she landed a No. 1 R&B album (her 10th) with Jump to It. THE AGE OF ARETHA DATES BACK TO MARCH 25, 1942, THE DAY FRANKLIN was born in Memphis. The fourth of five children—her mother, Barbara Siggers, was a gospel singer who died when Aretha was only 10; her father, C.L. Franklin, was a traveling preacher who settled down to become the socially progressive minister of Detroit’s New Bethel Baptist Church—Franklin displayed her prodigious talents from a young age. She was only 14 when she recorded her first album, 1956’s Songs of Faith, at her father’s church. After touring with her dad’s close friend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., she longed to follow in the footsteps of Sam Cooke and transition from gospel to secular pop. Franklin signed to Columbia Records in 1960; that same year, she scored her first Hot R&B hit with “Today I Sing the Blues.”

GENRE REVIEW BY Pop Larry Fitzmaurice @lfitzmaurice

OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS, ARIANA Grande has demonstrated that she is an on-the-rise pop star with an impressive and canny sense of taste.
