forward to welcoming you to the 145th synod of our diocese which will be held on Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9! Our annual synod is a time to gather as a diocesan family for the building up of our Church through the discernment we will undertake, the decisions we will make, the sharing we will do, the relationships we will strengthen, and the prayers we will offer to God. This year's synod theme is drawn from psalm 96, "Sing to the Lord a new song." Chosen by Bishop Susan Bell, it reflects a diocesan focus on renewal and our work towards a new mission action plan. In addition to a charge by our own bishop, we are delighted to welcome the Right Reverend Bill Cliff, Bishop of Brandon, as our featured speaker. There will also be some canon changes to consider, ministry stories and highlights to share, a budget to approve, an important presentation by the Mission Action Plan leadership committee and enriching worship to nourish us and root us in the Gospel of Jesus. I’m so grateful to both the agenda committee and the worship planning group for their outstanding work! On the first day of synod, registration will take place in the foyer of the Lincoln Alexander Center, beginning at 8:00 am. There you will be warmly welcomed and receive your nametag, voting card, and any other information required for your participation at synod. Lunch is included on both days. If you haven’t already, please be sure to call Mary Anne Grant at 905-527-1316 extension 380 by Thursday October 24 with any dietary restrictions. Also, don’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle. The Lincoln Alexander Centre (located at 160 King Street East in Hamilton) is a new venue for our synod; at this site you will enjoy excellent sight lines, professional sound and audio, and cushioned chairs with fold-out writing tables. We will also have space for displays from our partners in ministry. All this, and we expect the per delegate cost of synod should be comparable, if not less, to previous two-day synods. Lastly, thank you for serving as a member of synod! Whether this is your first or fifteenth synod, I hope you will find it to be a spiritually invigorating and rewarding experience! I am really looking forward to working with you and supporting this important governance function in the life of our diocese. My family and I are most grateful to all of you who offered prayerful, loving and moral support to us. In a pastoral letter to the cler- gy and people of York-Simcoe, I wrote that my recent illness was a life-altering experience for me. When we face such challenges in our lives, we tend to view life in a very different light than before. I am learning to pay very close attention to the signs and FIRST LIGHT signals that I receive from my Youth at St. Joseph of Nazareth, Bramalea, practice lighting the Advent wreath. A candle will be lit each week during Advent, followed by the lighting of the middle body. I encourage others to do candle on Christmas Eve. Advent starts on Dec. 1. PHOTO BY MICHAEL HUDSON the same.     The Synod of the Diocese of Niagara Anglican Church of Canada The Anglican Diocese of Niagara pleased with Court decision May 5th, 2008 Hamilton, Ontario The Anglican Church of Canada’s Diocese of Niagara today responded to the decision of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Madam Justice Jane A. Milanetti found that three Anglican parishes, St. Hilda’s in Oakville and St. George’s in Lowville, and The Church of the Good Shepherd, St. Catharine’s should be shared by both the departing congregants and the members loyal to The Diocese of Niagara. The Diocese was pleased in the decision, and is now anxious to move forward. Spokesperson for the Diocese, Archdeacon Michael D. Patterson, stated: “We are obviously very pleased with the decision, Madame Justice Milanetti accepted our proposal for sharing and joint administration as a logical interim solution. We feel that we were completely justified in resorting to the courts after negotiations failed. We can now provide ministry for loyal members of the Diocese and move forward to safeguard the physical heritage of the Churches, which were built by and have served generations of Anglicans.” Members of the Diocese indicated that they are still anxious to pursue constructive dialogue with those in the Church who have taken a different view throughout this matter. Said Patterson, “There has always been room for a range of views within the Church. We seek unity, not uniformity. We wish to ensure dialogue continues in the hopes that the resolution of this matter will be acceptable to all.” Patterson further addressed the issue of ministering to all those in the affected parishes, “We will continue to minister to the whole faith community, to ensure that no one is abandoned, even those who may have taken a different view throughout this matter.

    ANGLICAN JOURNAL Inspiring the faithful since 1875 vol. 139 no. 7 september 2013 Remember the Sabbath September seems to be all about gearing up for back to school, back to work, back to the rat race after the fleeting reprieve of summer holidays (if you had any). The promise that computers and labour-saving technology would mean more leisure time for everyone now seems laughable in the face of statistics that clearly show most people are working harder and longer than ever. In the midst of that busyness, and the stress that comes with it, the Journal poses the question, have we forgotten Sabbath? “Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy. For six days you shall labour and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work” is the fourth commandment (Ex. 20:8–10a), but what does it mean in a society that can shop, work and chatter online 24/7?
