Knowledge has no light but that shed on the world by redemption: all else is reconstruction, more technique. Perspectives must be fashioned that displace and estrange the world, reveal it to be with its rifts and crevices as indigent and distorted as it will appear one day in the messianic light. To gain such perspectives without velleity or violence, entirely from felt contact with its objects – this alone is the task of thought. It is the simplest of all things, because the situation calls imperatively for such knowledge, indeed because consummate negativity, once squarely faced, delineates the mirror image of its opposite. But it is also the utterly impossible thing, because it presupposes a standpoint removed, even though by a hair’s breadth, from the scope of existence, whereas we well know that any possible knowledge must not only first be wrested from what is, if it shall hold good, but is also marked, for this very reason, by the same disproportion and indigence which it seeks to escape. The more passionately thought denies its conditionality for the sake of the unconditional, the more unconsciously, and so calamitously, it is delivered up to the world. Even its own impossibility it must at last comprehend for the sake of the possible. But beside the demand thus placed on thought, the question of reality or unreality of redemption itself hardly matters. My son, Heyter who invariably leaves me in awe when I witness the meaning of creativity… The Power of the Divine in all of its magnificence and subtleness. ii Preface Occupational Therapy is the art and science of the use of daily activities in order to treat or prevent sickness and thus learning necessary skills, or to compensate for the loss thereof, as required for successful personal independence, work, play and recreation (Information brochure, School for Allied Health Professions, UFS, 2003). A very competent and experienced practitioner in occupational therapy asked me recently what made me choose to go into the field of occupational therapy. While it is certainly an important but difficult decision to make at the age of 18, I recall that I knew I wanted to go into the ‘helping business’. While studying to be a medical practitioner seemed the obvious and most prestigious choice, it was too expensive. (I will return to the aspect of prestige during the course of my theoretical analysis). Subsequently, psychology seemed to be the next best option. Nevertheless, in my mind’s eye, it appeared that I would have difficulty sitting passively, ‘only listening to people’s problems’. Thus, I heard from one of my classmates that her sister was studying occupational therapy. Until now, I cannot remember how she defined it, but I do remember her ‘definition’ included working with sick/ill people and being creative in the process.

Although Marxist scholars only include race as an outcome of or afterthought to capitalism, there have been attempts to add race to the field of social reproduction theory. The problem of whiteness still haunts workers' struggles in that white Marxists tend to believe that a primary focus on race draws attention away from class analysis and class unity. By beginning their analysis with their focus on achieving middle class status, reproductionists miss a depth of knowledge on the larger force of achieving whiteness on working-class whites. Reproductionists argue that the working class exists because it allows the middle class to be regenerated. A similar argument can be made for race, namely, that it is a social construction and not a biological reality.

    Cultural, Ethnic Differences and Educational Achievement of African Heritage Students: Towards Employing a Culturally Sensitive Curriculum in K-12 Classrooms: A Literature Review Patrice Juliet Pinder January 2008 1 Abstract For a long time, researchers have reported on the low academic performances of Black Americans in comparison to other minorities and non-minorities. During this time, there have been debates over the causes of the differences in education achievement between the various sub groups (i.e. ethnic subgroups) of students studied. The purpose of this review of literature paper (i.e. a combination of theoretical and research studies reviewed) is to discuss major reasons for the differences in education achievement levels between students of African heritage (i.e. African American students –involuntary immigrants to the USA and foreign born Afro –Caribbean and Africans who immigrated to the USA – voluntary immigrants), such as: cultural influences and levels of parental involvement. The study concludes with a call for the employment of more culturally sensitive curriculums to enhance the K-12 learning setting for ethnically diverse learners. Using qualitative data, the study shows that, while most of these students went on to college, the strategies they used and the attitudes they developed towards going to college differed across gender. This research exposes the importance of looking at the construction of academic success as a product of the intersection of race, class, and gender. The social relationships in the homes and communities of these young people transmit a specific set of messages that are unique to their gender and are in response to the anticipated roles they will face in the African-American home. African American adolescents grapple with the additional task of developing a racial/ethnic identity in an American social milieu that is often polarized along racial lines (Monteith & Spicer, 2000; Winant, 1998) and is replete with negative racial stereotypes (Hudley & Graham, 2001). Undoubtedly, African American iden- tity has been shaped by a history of oppression and marginalization in American society that dates from the 1600s, with the arrival of the first Africans in this country (Bogle, 1994). For example, scur- rilous depictions of incompetence, laziness, and aggression (e.g., Devine & Elliott, 1995) have their genesis in this country’s his- torical attempts to rationalize slavery and state-sanctioned racial terrorism. Box 8813, Waco, TX 76714 Although most African Americans are aware of the importance of educa- tion, many still continue to suffer from poor school achievement. School failure, high rates of educational dropout, low college enrollment, over- representation in special education classes, and low standardized test scores reflect a pervasive problem of educational underachievement among African Americans. Our work with African American males reveals a positive relationship between cultural mistrust and oppositional cultural attitudes and an inverse relationship with outcome expectations, outcome value, and academic achievement.

If adolescents’ rejection of dominant achievement ideologies is inspired by their social background, then social inequalities may work to exacerbate educational stratification. Although the low aspirations and academic disengagement of low income or working class children are frequent worries, these concerns also extend to gender, racial, and residential groups. Not only might race, gender and residency be related to adolescents’ educational beliefs, their intersection may embody multiple risks to the academic experiences of African American males in particular, especially since their racial and gender dispositions toward education are cultivated, in part, by their observance of similarly impacted neighbors. Copyright and re-use policy See http://shura.shu.ac.uk/information.html Sheffield Hallam University Research Archive http://shura.shu.ac.uk Abstract Drawing upon data generated by 303 young male footballers employed in 21 professional clubs in England and Wales, this paper explores some key aspects of players’ masculinities, identities and engagement with education. Although many players described their educational experiences in largely negative terms, some aspired towards average-ness, or middling, which are often central to working-class identifications with education. Other players found education ‘easy’, engaged in effortless achievement and had begun to internalize elements of the neo-liberal achievement ideology. The propensity for players to engage in copying and pasting from the work of others, and to regard their courses as being almost impossible to fail, were consistent with neo-liberal ideologies of credentialism and performativity. The findings suggest that a more nuanced understanding of young footballers’ education is warranted, and their aspirations and experiences can at least be partly understood as responses to the prevailing neoliberal learning environments which they inhabit.
