Unusually, the high-profile national hunt trainer Tony Martin has a talent on the flat in J P McManus= Clonard Street (Archipenko), and he takes up the challenge in a contest that the Irish have won twice in the last six years. KEENELAND NOVEMBER Nov. 6-14 10 a.m.

Out On a High Note... Friday=s Book 2 finale was drawing to a close when representatives of Japan=s Shimokobe Farm/ Heatherway Inc. struck out back for Sheikh=s Serenade (Unbridled=s Song), who fetched a session-topping $550,000. A daughter of the GI Breeders= Cup Sprint heroine Desert Stormer (Storm Cat) and a half to the dam of the recent GI Breeders= Cup Filly & Mare Sprint runner-up Better Lucky (Ghostzapper), Sheikh=s Serenade was offered by Warrendale Sales as Hip 1230. The 8-year-old sold in foal to Hunter Simms Hat Trick (Jpn). AShe exceeded our expectations--we thought she=d be in the $200,000 to $300,000 range,@ said Warrendale partner Hunter Simms. ABut with Better Lucky running second in the Breeders= Cup, that helped out. And she=s a really pretty physical and had a lot of appeal at the barn; she handled herself well. It looks like she=s off to Japan, now.@ Warrendale sold Sheikh Serenade on behalf of Live Oak Stud, who purchase Desert Stormer for $3.6 million at the 2002 Keeneland January Sale. Sheikh's Serenade marks the fifth six-figure mare, and the most expensive, that Warrendale has sold for Charlotte Weber=s operation at November. Earlier, Warrendale sold Private Jet (Smart Strike), a full-sister to Lookin At Lucky, for $340,000; and a pair of mares who made $250,000: the SW & GSP Namaste=s Wish (Pulpit); and Speightstown=s full-sister Gone Purrfect (Gone West). AWe=re selling 20 in all for Live Oak,@ said Simms, who said it was all just part of some routine culling. AThey have a lot of fillies from their families, plus some of the mares they are selling are in foal to their own stallions, and they=re just trying to get them out there to other people a little bit.@ Simms added, AThey offer some of those middle-aged mares and keep the bloodlines going with the younger mares. Last year, we sold Zoftig for them, and she brought $1.1 million at 16.@ Simms joined the chorus of those who thought the market=s been very strong for mares. AA lot of the mares we=ve had have exceeded our expectations,@ he said. AFor a mare in foal to Hat Trick--who I think stands for $15,000--to bring $550,000, that=s pretty good. And I think it will continue. As people get knocked out of Books 1 and 2, hopefully there will be overflow into the other books.A TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 11/8/14 • PAGE 5 of 16 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

FIRST-EVER JOCKEY HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN AT NYRA The New York Racing Association has reached an agreement with the Jockey=s Guild to extend formal health care coverage to New York Thoroughbred jockeys, NYRA announced yesterday. The program has been approved by the New York State Gaming Commission and will begin later this month. As recommended by the New York Task Force on Jockey Health and Safety, a dedicated funding stream was set aside for the program, which is expected to cover 50-75 current and former jockeys. Jockeys must have ridden in at least 250 races at Aqueduct, Belmont or Saratoga during the prior year, or 150 races at Finger Lakes. Certain disabled or retired jockeys will also be covered and jockeys meeting these requirements will be eligible for reimbursements for their 2014 health expenses. In 2015 and beyond, jockeys will purchase and be reimbursed for health insurance purchased on the exchange operated in New York under the new national health care program. New York now joins Delaware, California, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey offering financial assistance toward jockey health insurance. "The New York Racing Association is proud to assist in facilitating health insurance options for New York jockeys," stated Christopher Kay, Chief Executive Officer and President of the New York Racing ROOD & RIDDLE WIN GALBREATH AWARD Association. Rood continued, AThere were a lot of investors in breeding stock who wanted to keep their horses in Kentucky, so all the service providers---farms, vets, farriers---benefitted from this growth. We knew that Hagyard, Davidson, and McGee was a long-established practice group in the area, but felt there was certainly room for another such practice, so we decided to go forward in 1986, despite the signs of a downturn in the industry. It was a risk, but one we thought would pay off."
