These working cyclists are often Latino or Asian male immigrants who are situated within intersectional and interlocking systems of global migration and capital flows, intense time pressures by restaurants and customers, precarious tip-based livelihoods, an e-bike ban and broken windows policing, and unsafe streets designed for drivers.

Amy Weinstein, Artistic Director of Studentslive Passport to Broadway

Letter from Amy Weinstein, Artistic Director of StudentsLive Passport to Broadway: It is very nice to meet you and thank you for taking a moment to read about the very unique mission and purpose of this Brooklyn College Musical Theater Intensive. I am so pleased to be able to bring my professional background, long held respect and contacts in the theater community on Broadway, across the country and world, and expertise in theater history, methods and philosophies of theater education to help inspire and increase your skill sets at every level and instill confidence in your own unique talents. I believe that the best theater studies should prepare students for all kinds of careers that will enrich and transform the human experience in a rich, incandescent, diverse and highly multi-disciplinary environment. These last eighteen years have been a powerful experience for myself and my creative and production team travelling to 7 countries and hosting seven more here direct on Broadway in New York City with our Passport to Broadway Program. The thousands of serious aspiring students involved in this rigorous process grew beyond our wildest imagination with a passion and dedication for learning and performing this very challenging art form in almost impossible short windows of time; What would normally require a Broadway professional at least 6 to 8 weeks of rehearsals is taught and learned eloquently in 10 short days with our exceptional Broadway Artists faculty and students. They made the virtually impossible, possible. And that is a testament to both their talents and hard work, as well as the collaboration and individual expression great Musical Theater evokes.

Synopsis In William H. Macy’s moving directorial debut RUDDERLESS, Billy Crudup plays Sam, a former high-profile advertising executive whose life is torn apart by the sudden death of his son. Living off the grid on a docked sailboat, he wastes away his days while drowning his pain in alcohol. When Sam discovers a box filled with his son's demo tapes and lyrics, his own child’s musical talent is a revelation for him, a grieving father who felt he’d been absent from his son’s life. Communing with his deceased son’s dashed dreams, Sam learns each song and eventually musters the will to perform one at a local bar.

Hollywood, Bike Messengers, and the New Economy Jeffrey L. Kidder Northern Illinois University, USA Abstract The sociological study of popular cinema provides an analytic entry point for exploring how economic realities are given meaning through cultural products. In this paper, I compare how two Hollywood movies about bike messengers, Quicksilver and Premium Rush, position their main characters in relationship to the new economy. Both films provide commentaries on work and social class, but, as products of unique socio-historical periods, I argue that their commentaries differ significantly. Produced in the 1980s, Quicksilver uses messengering as a form of middle class redemption, allowing the protagonist to return to the world of capitalist finance. By contrast, as a product of the Great Recession, Premium Rush offers a utopian vision of self-determination for low-wage service workers at the same time that it reifies the uncertainty, unpredictability, and riskiness that increasingly characterize American labor. I also show that both films converge in their portrayal of women and working class blacks. Keywords bike messengers, culture, film, Hollywood, occupations, new economy, precarious work, sociology Introduction “There will always be animal reserves and Indian reservations to hide the fact that they are dead, and that we are all Indians” – Baudrillard (1976 [1993]: 19) Premium Rush, directed by David Koepp, is a wide distribution Hollywood movie released in the late summer of 2012. It is about a New York City bike messenger embroiled in a corrupt police detective’s scheme to steal a small fortune. Many critics responded favorably to the film—even if they found the plot uninspired, if not silly.
