We provide an overview of the reserve along with sighting locales, a list of 185 birds with their resident status and abundance, and a list of the available bird habitats. Photographs of habitats and some of the bird species are included. -

INTRODUCTION UC-Stallcup TEXT.indd 1 1/23/14 11:30 AM This contribution to the California Natural History Guide Series of the University of California Press follows a long tradi- tion of books that explain, explore, and celebrate the natural riches of California and beyond. Our intent is to tell beginning birders, or curious naturalists, the how, what, when, where, and why of birding. Because birds are so mobile, some individuals of most spe- cies can wander far from their natal homes and appear any- where. Here we have tried to include only those species most likely to be seen along the coast, from Big Sur to the Oregon border. This is not a field guide to bird identification, but a field guide to the birds themselves. Birding is a word that encompasses many concepts. For some, the activity of searching for and observing birds is a clear window into the natural world, an affirmation of its beauty and its peacefulness. To others, birding is a delightful diversion from the hectic or perhaps boring daily routine of the mod- ern world— providing calm amid the chaos. Birds are nature’s ambassadors, connecting us through their ancient lineage to evolution’s astonishing creativity and offering us some guid- ance, through our study of their habitat needs, in our steward- ship of the Earth. Some people have found the wonders of birds to be the perfect antidote to sadness or loneliness, or a path to comradeship with kindred spirits; others consider the complex- ities of identification or behavior an intellectual challenge. -

The holes they excavate in dead trees, poles and fence posts are used by bluebirds, wrens, chickadees and titmice to name but a few. It is important for many bird and animal species that we leave dead trees whenever it's safe to do so! Falkland Islands Circumnavigation – A South Atlantic bird & wildlife spectacle Falkland Islands There is no other groups of islands in the entire Atlantic Ocean which allows fairly easy access to such a diversity of spectacular bird species under such a mild climate and with such a variety of marine mammals thrown in. The Falkland Islands are known to most people today more for their recent political history than their natural history. And even to many nature lovers, the Falklands are often seen as secondary compared to the neighbouring Antarctica and South Georgia. This voyage aims to set the record straight: The Falkland Islands are worth every minute of a two-week circumnavigation, and they will provide us with a long string of wonderful encounters with penguins (4-5 species), albatrosses, cormorants, ducks and geese, raptors, shore birds, song birds and more – as well as seals and sea lions, whales and dolphins. We will see a variety of the islands’ unique landscapes of rolling hills, stone runs, rugged shorelines, pristine white beaches and lush giant kelp beds. We will see the endemic bird species and several near-endemic ones as well, and we intend to visit the southern hemisphere’s largest albatross colony on Steeple Jason. There will be time enough to allow for prolonged visits to the most magnificent of the sites during the best of the weather conditions. Holliman Biology Department Birmingham-Southern College Birmingham, AL 35204 ABSTRACT: The habitat and distribution of the clapper rail Rallus longirostris saturatus in salt and brackish-mixed marshes of Alabama is described. A total of 4,490 hectares of habitat is mapped. Smaller units of vti'getation are characterized in selected study areas. A comparison of these plant communities and call, count data is shown for each locality. Concentrations of clapper rails generally occurrecj in those habitats with the higher percentage of Spartina alterniflora. A census techni que utilizing taped calls is described. Trapping procedures are given for drift fences and funnel traps. -

The bird died later that day. It had begun definitiveprebasic body molt, but not flightfeather molt. Necropsy indicated that the birdwas a female,probably in her secondcalendar year. Johnson and Thompson identifiedthe birdas a Long-billedMurrelet, Brachyramphus perdix, on the basisof plumageand measurements;it is the firstspecimen of thisspecies for Washington state. My beads INSIDE are becoming to me and my coat is very black. I Calendar raise my children in a hole in a tree. My young like to live there. They feed upon grasshoppers of Events and flies. I live with my children. My red breast is becoming to me. I shout every summer and the people like to hear me. They all know my voice. I do not eat much pitch but I like acorns." So goes the description of Lewis’s woodpeckers as described in an old Apache folk tale. The Anglo-Saxon world first learned about these interesting woodpeckers from a report The Bird School sent back from the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Project Merriweather Lewis first described them in May 1806 when he found them what is now the vicinity Seabirding Trips of Kamiah, Idaho on the Clearwater River. His discovery led to the bird being named for him. More recently, scientists discovered fossil Santa Cruz evidence of Lewis’s woodpeckers in the La Brea Tar Pits, dating their presence in the area back to Birds at least the Pleistocene Era and showing that these birds were once resident in Southern California. It is believed that their habitat at that time was coastal live oak. Lewis’s Woodpeckers are the fourth largest North American woodpecker and are closely related to the more familiar Acorn Woodpecker. A beautiful bird, the Lewis’s is on a list of concern Birder's by the International Union for the Conservation Notebook of Nature (IUCN) as their numbers seem to be declining. -

Warheit Abstract.-Ecologists attempt to explain species diversitywithin Recent seabird communities in termsof Recent oceanographic and ecological phenomena. However, many of the principal ocean- ographic processes that are thoughtto structureRecent seabird systemsare functionsof geological processes operating at many temporal and spatial scales. For example, major oceanic currents,such as the North Pacific Gyre, are functionsof the relative positions of continentsand Antarcticgla- ciation,whereas regional air masses,submarine topography, and coastline shape affectlocal processes such as upwelling. I hypothesize that the long-termdevelopment of these abiotic processes has influencedthe relative diversityand communitycomposition of North Pacific seabirds. To explore this hypothesis,I divided the historyof North Pacific seabirds into seven intervalsof time. Using published descriptions,I summarized the tectonicand oceanographic events that occurred during each of these time intervals,and related changes in species diversityto changes in the physical environment.Over the past 95 years,at least 94 species of fossil seabirds have been described from marine deposits of the North Pacific. The Status and Occurrence of Black Phoebe (Sayornis nigricans) in British Columbia. By Rick Toochin. Introduction and Distribution The Black Phoebe (Sayornis nigricans) is a small passerine belonging to the tyrant-flycatcher family. The Black Phoebe occurs as a year-round resident throughout most of its range; however, its northern populations are partially migratory (Wahl et al. 2005). It is a species found throughout the year from southwestern Oregon south, through California including the Baja Peninsula (excluding the central regions of the Peninsula), east through Arizona, New Mexico, southern Colorado, west Texas, south through Mexico, Central America to Panama (excluding El Salvador) and in South America from the coastal mountains of Venezuela, through Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, to western Bolivia and northwestern Argentina (Sibley 2000, Howell and Webb 2010, Hoyo et al. 2006). In the past couple of decades the Black Phoebe has been slowly expanding its known range northward into northern Oregon and southern Washington where it is still considered a very rare visitor, but with records increasing every year (Wahl et al. 2005, WBRC 2012). The Black Phoebe has been recorded from Idaho, Nevada, Utah, southern Oklahoma and Florida (Sibley 2000). The Black Phoebe is an accidental visitor to south-central Alaska (Gibson et al. 2013). In British Columbia this species is considered a casual visitor but Provincial records, like those of Washington State, are on the rise and the status of this species in British Columbia could change in the near future. Identification and Similar Species The Black Phoebe has a huge range that encompasses two continents.
