MEC and Tshemba Foundation's Godfrey Phillips addressing the guests. Eye-care problem resolved at Tintswalo Hospital

Yoliswa Hlatshwayo

ACORNHOEK - The Tshemba Foundation has brought hope to residents after refurbishing and donating optometry equipment to Tintswalo Hospital. The eye clinic and cataract theatre will now be able to reduce massive backlog to improve the lives of community members. The Tshemba Foundation’s medical volunteer programme is designed to connect medical professionals with knowledge, skills, experience and a deep desire to give back with rural communities in need. Tshemba Foundation recruits local and international healthcare professionals to provide life-saving medical care to the local community with the goal of upskilling and training the local hospital staff and putting systems and procedures in place that help hospitals like Tintswalo provide quality healthcare for more patients. During the handover held on 20 October, Godfrey Phillips, the foundation’s co- founder, said they are committed to helping the community as it was always their vision to make a diff erence. By the end of the 2018/19 fi nancial year, the province was having a documented backlog of 6 703 patients waiting for cataract surgery. The contributory factors to the high numbers of the backlogs, amongst others, was the lack of Ophthalmologists and Cataract Surgeons to conduct cataract surgery and equipment. “We accept the donated eye care unit with equipment that will be used to conduct cataract surgeries, and I am pleased to hear that Tshemba Foundation has also committed in recruiting eye care specialists who will then come over now and assist with operations as well. Not all is lost after all,” concluded Manzini. Some of the donated equipment. MEC Sasekani Manzini undergoes an eye test at the clinic.
