Karen Fox March 2019 viii 1 THE CULTURAL JOURNEYS OF DICTIONARIES OF BIOGRAPHY KAREN FOX Fifty years after the publication of the first volume of the Australian Dictionary of Biography, in mid-2016 participants from around the English-speaking world gathered in Canberra for the conference ‘“True Biographies of Nations”? Exploring the Cultural Journeys of Dictionaries of National Biography’.1 Organised by the National Centre of Biography at The Australian National University (ANU) and supported by the National Library of Australia (NLA), the conference provided a rare opportunity for those involved in the production of dictionaries of national biography to come together, along with archivists, librarians, fellow researchers, and members of the public, to reflect on the purpose and place of national biographies in the twenty-first century. The aim was to explore the cultural journeys taken by dictionaries of national biography, to consider the challenges and opportunities facing such projects today, and to gauge the extent of their development into truly national biographies. Thematically and institutionally the 2016 gathering was the sequel to an earlier conference on national biographies, organised by the Humanities Research Centre and the Australian Dictionary of Biography at ANU, and the NLA, and held in Canberra in 1995. Biographical Collections in National Contexts’, in Setting the Standards: Institutions, Networks and Communities of National Historiography, eds Ilaria Porciani and Jo Tollebeek (Houndmills and New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2012), 89. 1 ‘TRUE Biographies of Nations?’ ‘compare a variety of its modern manifestations’, it took place over three days, with the proceedings published as National Biographies and National Identity: A Critical Approach to Theory and Editorial Practice.2 Musing on the genre in the introduction to the collection, Iain McCalman suggested that the genre of the national biographical dictionary stood ‘at the heart of the most ferocious and divisive contemporary debates about the epistemology and hermeneutics of knowledge’.3 In the late twentieth- century context of fracturing national identities and the assertion of multiculturalism and multilingualism in Europe and the antipodes, he stated, ‘[m]akers of national biographies stand in the front line of these identity wars’.4 McCalman’s characterisation of dictionaries of national biography as prisms through which debates over identity—national, global, or even individual—are refracted remains pertinent 20 years later. Many of the issues discussed at the earlier conference, and in the resulting collection of papers, involved questions about the nation: its composition, its meanings, or its future. James Walter asked ‘seven questions’ of national biography, including how well such works could encapsulate ‘the imaginative life of the nation’ or embody the whole community rather than merely elites within a society, and what role collective biography plays in nation building.5 Focusing on female lives, Patricia Grimshaw too considered ‘the tradition of nation-making’, suggesting that recording women’s significance in these processes required understanding ‘the racial and gender dimensions of the construction of the idea of “nation”’, as well as the ways in which women were themselves ‘enmeshed in’ that idea.6 Elizabeth Baigent

    Brian Manning A Blast From the Past: An activist’s account of the Wave Hill walk-off The 6th Vincent Lingiari Memorial Lecture Delivered by Brian Manning Northern Territory University 23rd August 2002 Photo - Manning Collection [from Freedom Day website - http://freedomday.info/] There was an expectation amongst Aboriginal Workers that the 1965 application to vary the Cattle Industry Award by the North Australian Workers Union would at last grant them wage justice and remove laws which arbitrarily denied them equal value for equal work. For a seven day week, working from sun-up to sun-down Aboriginal pastoral workers in the Northern Territory were paid around 3 pounds 6 shillings ($7.00) when white workers were paid around 23 pounds ($46). In addition Aboriginal workers were to be fed in accordance with a schedule in the Wards Employment Ordinance, which provided for an adequate and varied nutritious diet. Daily fare in the Wave Hill stock camps consisted of dry-salted beef, dry bread, tea and sugar. Employer advocates asserted that most Aboriginal workers were merely hose-holders; an inference that they were only capable of watering the vegetable garden on the station and therefore were not deserving of the same wage and conditions as non-Aboriginal workers. Contrary to the argument expounded by many of the employers that Aborigines either couldn’t handle money or alternatively had nothing to spend it on there was eager anticipation amongst Aboriginal Communities who would be able buy up on consumer goods: radios, record players, records, stockmen’s outfits clothes and toys for their wives and kids and maybe even a second hand motorcar when the travelling hawkers came round.

    Heritage Newsletter of the Blue Mountains Association of Cultural Heritage Organisations Inc November-December 2015 ISSUE 41 ISSN 2203-4366 The Hydro Majestic Hotel The iconic hotel was created by Mark Foy the Sydney businessman, sportsman and playboy, in 1904. The initial complex comprised three earlier buildings: The single storey country retreat of WH Hargraves, son of Edward Hargraves of gold discovery fame. This home had been built in two stages, a Victorian style cottage, followed by a two storey extension which became the Delmonte Hallway. Hargraves land also included 9km of bush walking tracks, available to the public. Foy leased the property in 1902 and purchased it in 1903. The existing hotel called the Belgravia, opened in 1891 by Mr & Mrs Ellis. Cottage owned by local solicitor Alfred Tucker. In 1904 Mark Foy created his hydropathic establishment, opening the facility on 4th July to attract American visitors, advertising cures for nervous, alimentary, respiratory and circulatory ailments, but did not include sufferers of infectious diseases and mental illness. 1 HERITAGE November-December 2015 He believed that the land contained mineral springs, although this was probably in error, as Foy was importing mineral water from Germany. The town was then known as Medlow, and Foy petitioned the NSW Government to change the name to Medlow Bath. Belgravia Hargraves House Tucker cottage Hydro Majestic 1904 - Casino A striking prefabricated casino was brought in from Chicago, and erected between Hargravia and Belgravia with the picture gallery joining the buildings together. The dome was built to Foy’s specifications and dismantled for shipping. Guests enjoyed the magnificent view over the Megalong Valley and a resident Swiss doctor, George Baur, attended to their ailments.

    A Diet for a Sensitive Soul: Vegetarianism in Eighteenth-Century Britain Anita Guerrini While vegetarianism has a long history in Western culture, it reemerged forcefully in late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Britain. Three main motivations for vegetarianism converged in this period: religious, medical, and moral. In addition, a vegetarian diet entered mainstream medical and popular thought in the works of the physician George Cheyne. By the time of Joseph Ritson's Essay on Abstinence from Animal Food in 1802, however, vegetarianism was about to rejoin the irrational fringe, exemplified in the nineteenth century by Sylvester Graham and his followers. 1 In this essay, I shall focus on three vegetarians of the period: the radical hatter Thomas Tryon (1634-1703), George Cheyne (1671-1743), and the man of letters Joseph Ritson (1752-1803). Cheyne's work, especially his Essay of Health and Long Life (1724) and The English Malady (1733), defined the nascent concept of the sensitive character and explicitly connected it to diet and lifestyle. To Cheyne, a vegetarian diet was preeminently a diet for the sensitive soul. Over the century, the sensitive soul negotiated a path from the overtly religious Tryon to the covertly religious Cheyne to the professedly antireligious Ritson. To each, in addition, vegetarianism was part of a wider critique of contemporary society. Tryon was one of a number of religiously motivated vegetarians in the period following the English Civil War. 2 The context of his ideas can be delineated by examining an earlier

Lord Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies Wilfrid Laurier University (Canada) For the past three years I have been designing a series of exercises in English to Latin prose translation to complement a third and fourth semester university reading course in Latin prose and poetry. In the last year I have begun to extend my work to cover the first two semesters as well, an area which intersects with the high school curriculum. Although I have designed a fair complement of traditional military and political passages and material based on social history, I expect students to translate an increasing number of texts which are either unexpurgated or subject only to minor adaptations. For this reason I tend to ‘mine’ much of what I read—or would like to reread—for its suitability for translation into Latin prose. Each of the pieces ultimately chosen is meant to engage an idea as well as to illustrate various issues of syntax and style, but some encapsulate my overall approach more fully than others. A favorite page from Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom is perhaps the most striking illustration of the changes in both Classical scholarship and the world as a whole since the publication, nearly a century ago, of the textbook which I used to use.
