Event Management in Ice Hockey Case: Liiga (The Finnish Elite League) Södertörn University | School of Natural Sciences, Technology and Environmental Studies | Tourism Studies Master´s Thesis 30 credits | Autumn Semester 2016 Event Management in Ice Hockey Case: Liiga (The Finnish Elite League) Author: Maiju Heinonen Supervisor: Dr. Anders Steene 2 Abstract The aim of this research was to discuss about event management theory and how the Liiga (the major ice hockey league in Finland) team organisations could use this theory to improve their home game events. This topic has been divided into two research questions from which the first discusses the current situation and the other gives suggestions for future improvements for the Liiga team organisations. This research is conducted as a master’s theses and it has been conducted in years 2014 to 2016. In order to understand the research topic the general theory of event management has been told from the sporting event point of view. This theory has been divided into two different sections which are the five stages of event management and the operational strategies of event management. Answers for the research questions have been search with a qualitative research and its methods of interview and questionnaire, observation and content analysis. These methods and the way these have been used in this research are introduced after the event management theory. The data collected with the selected qualitative research methods has been introduced as empirical findings. These empirical findings are introduced a research method at a time and in a same order as the data has been collected. After introducing the collected data it has been carefully analysed. The analysis have also been divided into two section from which the first answers to the first research question concerning the current situation and the other the second questions concerning the future improvement that could be done. The first part of analysis has been made in a same chronological order as the event management theory has been written in order it to be easy to compere these two to each other. In the end the conclusions of this research and its research questions are introduced. Also the knowledge which this research is offering for the tourism industry and for its readers have been discussed. This are also a lot of different ways how this research could be continued and made further and these ways have been discussed as well. Last but not least the research has been viewed critically and the quality of it has been questioned. Around 2.4 million viewers view the Liiga every year (Ministry of the Interior 2014, 5). Unfortunately the amount of visitors at ice hockey games everywhere in Finland is decreasing and one of the reasons is the lack of proper event management inside the ice hockey organisations. Ice hockey team organisations are often taking the visitor for granted and are not investing enough resources to the event management which could improve the enjoyment of the visitor at their ice hockey games. For example the newest team in Liiga, Sport of Vaasa, had 4402 visitors at their home games in the beginning of the season and nowadays the amount is only 2792 at its lowest. The local newspaper did a research for the visitors in which 270 took part and the message was clear; the visitors were not satisfied how the event was managed by the organisation and were not ready to pay for that level of service. Scandals in sport AN ACCOMPANIMENT TO ON THE TAKE TONY JOEL AND MATHEW TURNER Contemporary Histories Research Group, Deakin University February 2020 he events that enveloped the Victorian Football League (VFL) generally and the Carlton Football Club especially in September 1910 were not unprecedented. Gambling was entrenched in TMelbourne’s sporting landscape and rumours about footballers “playing dead” to fix the results of certain matches had swirled around the city’s ovals, pubs, and back streets for decades. On occasion, firmer allegations had even forced authorities into conducting formal inquiries. The Carlton bribery scandal, then, was not the first or only time when footballers were interrogated by officials from either their club or governing body over corruption charges. It was the most sensational case, however, and not only because of the guilty verdicts and harsh punishments handed down. As our new book On The Take reveals in intricate detail, it was a particularly controversial episode due to such a prominent figure as Carlton’s triple premiership hero Alex “Bongo” Lang being implicated as the scandal’s chief protagonist. Indeed, there is something captivating about scandals involving professional athletes and our fascination is only amplified when champions are embroiled, and long bans are sanctioned. As a by-product of modernity’s cult of celebrity, it is not uncommon for high-profile sportspeople to find themselves exposed by unlawful, immoral, or simply ill-advised behaviour whether it be directly related to their sporting performances or instead concerning their personal lives. Most cases can be categorised as somehow relating to either sex, illegal or criminal activity, violence, various forms of cheating (with drugs/doping so prevalent it can be considered a separate category), prohibited gambling and match-fixing.

The aim is to show how big the difference is between small-sided games and 5v5 game from the scoring chance point of view. You can’t get more game like scoring situations than if you are actually playing the real game like drill. The thesis consists of a literature review, which discusses the characteristics of ice hockey and ice hockey statistics. It also goes into studies of small-sided games in other sports. The last part of the thesis is about how this research was planned and imple- mented. In this research based thesis I have first analysed three differed kinds of small-sided games with even strength and then compared the statistics from them to the statistics from five against five games played with even strength. Small-sided games were first compared as one unit and then separately to 5v5 game. There were six times more scoring chances and over seven times more goals in small- sided games. With in all small-sided games, 3v3 had the most goals and scoring chanc- es.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips March 25, 2021 Sabres’ winless streak hits 15 as Penguins roll to 5-2 win By Will Graves Associated Press March 25, 2021 PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins are tired. They’re hurting. And in a way, they’re scrambling. Nothing a visit from the reeling Buffalo Sabres can’t fix. Sidney Crosby picked up his 13th goal of the season, Tristan Jarry stopped 26 shots and the Penguins extended Buffalo’s winless streak to 15 games with a 5-2 victory on Wednesday night. Evan Rodrigues, Kris Letang, John Marino and Zach Aston-Reese scored also for the Penguins, who recovered from a sluggish three-game set against New Jersey in which they managed just one victory by pouncing on the undermanned and overmatched Sabres. “We’re a close group, a very resilient group,” Marino said. “We’ve had a lot of come-from-behind wins, a lot of bounce-back wins (like tonight). It says a lot about the guys in the room.” Buffalo goalie Dustin Tokarski, making his first NHL start in more than five years with Carter Hutton out due to a lower-body injury, finished with 37 saves and kept the Sabres in it until late in the second period, when Marino and Aston-Reese scored just over 2 minutes apart to give the Penguins all the cushion required. Rasmus Dahlin scored his second goal of the season and Victor Olofsson beat Jarry on a penalty shot in the third period, but the NHL’s worst team remained in a tailspin.

While this call to action has strongly influenced the interdisciplinary impulse of performance studies and prompted important cross- disciplinary investigations between performance genres such as theatre, dance, performance art, political performance, ritual, and play, sport has remained under- theorized in the field. In this project, I begin to fill this gap by approaching the practices, activities, and events of twenty-first century sport through the lens of performance studies.

  • FIFA Specific Recommendations to Combat Match Manipulation
FIFA Far the Came. Far the Warld. To the members of FIFA Circular no. 1424 Zurich, 30 May 2014 SG/mut Specific Recommendations to Combat Match Manipulation Dear Sir or Madam, Match-fixing is a known problem in international sport. Where football is concerned, legal proceedings around the world have provided evidence that it is agiobai concern that can no longer be ignored. The football community must be united in response. There must be a holistic approach, collectively employed with the will and commitment to fight against corruption and to safeguard the integrity of football. At the 63rd FIFA Congress in May 2013, FIFA member association delegates were presented with a thorough report on FIFA's ongoing fight against the scourge of match manipulation and were called upon to implement their own national integrity initiatives with FIFA's guidance and support. The Congress fully backed the FIFA President with overwhelming approval for renewed calls for member associations to take steps towards establishing anational integrity initiative, to seek more help from governments and law enforcement authorities, and to seek guidance and support to combat match manipulation through the five pillars of FIFA's integrity initiative: prevention, risk management, information gathering, investigations and sanctions. Match manipulation has no place in football. For prevention to be effective, the football community must collaborate in a concerted and cohesive manner by enhancing the exchange of information and best practices, overcoming loopholes in existing legislation, improving legal and judicial cooperation, ensuring that administrative systems with appropriate and effective legal means are established and creating preventive measures arid relevant training programmes.

  • Match-Fixing: the Role of Prevention
This content is drawn from Transparency International’s forthcoming Global Corruption Report: Sport. For more information on our Corruption in Sport Initiative, visit: www.transparency.org/sportintegrity 4.6 Match-fixing: the role of prevention Ulrike Spitz1 The need for prevention measures The causes of and influences on match-fixing are complex.2 Sporting events can be fixed to gain financial advantage or they can be fixed for sporting reasons – that is, to get the desired result. A pervasive culture of cash payments – from referees’ travel expenses to players’ goal bonuses to agents’ transfer fees – reduces misgivings about illegal activity and increases the risk of individuals becoming involved. High wages, abundant free time and exposure to gambling also heighten the vulnerability of professional athletes, while the huge rise of online gambling, in real time and across borders, has led to a sharp increase in activity by organised crime, which sees match-fixing as a low-risk venture with high returns. When sports organisations started to recognise the problem of match-fixing around 15 years ago, reactions varied. Some sports such as tennis or cricket put prevention programmes in place as early as 2000, but football did not start to tackle match-fixing seriously until 2009, when the big European football betting scandals were uncovered.3 Previously the initial reaction to any allegations had been to call in the police, as the problem was seen to belong exclusively to criminal elements from outside the game. However, no match-fixing can take place without the involvement of individual players, referees or officials, and therefore requires interrelated responses, from adequate legal frameworks and law enforcement procedures to public awareness and the engagement of sport supporters.
