The Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands is outreaching to fill a permanent full-time position for an Administrative Support Assistant (ASA), GS-0303-05/06, in the Supervisor’s Office located in Chadron, Nebraska. The Position:

The primary duties of this position comprise of internal and external customer service and support, working closely with Forest Service employees as well as the public. The ASA is the primary purchase cardholder for the Supervisor’s Office, processes IAS requisitions, maintains inventory of the organization’s accountable property, receives calls and visitors while providing support for front desk operations, serves as a Unit Collection Officer in the POSS system, responds to non-technical requests for information regarding office functions, assists employees with travel questions and keeps employees informed of Human Resources policies and changes including assistance with submitting personnel actions. Works as a COR on contracts as needed for the unit and offers other areas of clerical support such as processing of data including validation for correctness and entry into existing or development of new databases using the appropriate software systems. Receives data from multiple sources in multiple forms, including email, reviews the data, and processes it to meet a variety of administrative needs.

Quick facts about the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands

 Responsible for the management and sustainability of the Bessey Nursery, the Nation’s oldest Federal Nursery and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Home to the largest hand-planted forest in the western hemisphere, second only to Johannesburg South Africa.  Internationally known Hudson-Meng Education and Research Center, which encompasses the largest extinct bison bonebed in the world, adjacent to it is the Toadstool Geological Park.  Hosts the National Grasslands Visitor Center.  Supports a diverse wildlife program with numerous partnership agreements for habitat improvement that support species like the Black Footed Ferret, Burrowing Owl, and Black Tailed Prairie Dog.  Habitat for significant populations of huntable and viewable wildlife, such as, wild turkey, mule and white-tailed deer, and elk.  Manages the , two proposed Grasslands Wilderness Areas, and the , along with developed campgrounds and over 100 miles of hiking trails.  Administers permits for over 300 grazing allotments, 60 direct permittees, and seven grazing associations.

The NNFG encompasses over 1.1 million acres of land in both Nebraska and South Dakota, including five Ranger Districts and one Nursery. The Pine Ridge Ranger District includes part of the Nebraska National Forest and all of the Oglala in the northwest corner of the state. The Bessey Ranger District includes a portion of the Nebraska National Forest in west-central and the McKelvie National Forest in north-central NE. The Bessey Nursery is co-located with the Bessey Ranger District at Halsey, NE. The Fall River Ranger District and Wall Ranger District share management of the Buffalo Gap National Grassland across southwestern South Dakota. The Ft. Pierre National Grassland is managed by the Ft. Pierre Ranger District and is situated in south- central South Dakota.

The Supervisor’s Office is located in Chadron, Nebraska and is co-located with the Pine Ridge Ranger District. The Pine Ridge Job Corps Center is located 10 miles south of Chadron and is a close partner with the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands.

Duty Station Information:

Chadron, Nebraska is a full-service community of approximately 6,000 and is located in the northwest part of the state. The Pine Ridge area of Nebraska provides a wide range of recreation opportunities. Hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, wildlife watching and a variety of other outdoor activities are available in the immediate vicinity. Besides the National Forest and Grassland, the area supports , with a wide variety of activities, and State Park, with a depth of history rarely available in other places.

Chadron is the county seat of Dawes County and is located 100 miles south of Rapid City, South Dakota; 300 miles northeast of Denver, Colorado; and 450 miles northwest of Omaha, Nebraska. Chadron's elevation is 3,365 feet above sea level. Basic economic activities include education, retail and wholesale sales, farming, ranching, transportation and tourism.

The community of Chadron offers a new hospital, a medical clinic with five doctors, a nursing home, 19 churches, a public library, three banks, a theater, two senior citizen centers, four dentists, swimming pool, tennis courts, several city parks, a golf course, baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, and youth programs. It also has an outstanding volunteer fire department and volunteer emergency medical technicians, an airport with daily commercial flights to Denver, police department, sheriff's department, and a thriving retail business community.

Chadron is also the home of Chadron State College. This state college has an annual enrollment of approximately 3000 students and it employs approximately 260 individuals. Chadron State College offers both bachelor and master degree programs and is well known for its education (teaching) program. The college has a very impressive physical activity center, which has an indoor track, weight facilities, racquetball courts and pool that are open to the general public through a membership program.
