The two had sung together in church as adolescents, and had traveled with the Northern Jubilee Gospel Singers and the Traveling Souls Spiritual Church. It was Butler who con vinced his friend Mayfield to leave his own struggling group, the Alfatones, and join him, Sam Gooden, and brothers Richard and Arthur Brooks— the remnants of another strug gling vocal group called the Roosters. In the middle of 1970, Curtis Mayfield quit the Impressions and began one of the most groundbreaking and successful solo careers in history. Nothing happened to force his hand—no dramatic falling out or heated argument. In his customary seat-of-the-pants way, he simply picked up the phone one evening, called fellow Impression Fred Cash, and said, “Fred, I’m going to try to go on my own and see what I can do. You and Sam [Gooden] can do the same thing. Y’all go on your own and see what you can do.” Fred called Sam and told him the news, and that was it. My father left the group. Fred, Sam, and the Impressions, three of the most important forces in my father’s life for more than a decade, no longer occupied his mind. The boyhood dreams, the endless miles traveled on tour, the lonely nights trying to steal sleep in motel beds, the harmonizing and fraternizing all came to an end. Dad struggled with the decision. For years, the three Impressions were so close that if you saw one of them, you usually saw the other two. They spent more time with each other than they did with their own wives. Yet, my father had the ability to turn off his emotions and make cold, calculated business decisions when he felt it necessary. Recalling this side of him, my brother Tracy says, “You saw a good and evil. The evil part came out when it was about business. I always separated the parent from the businessperson.

2021 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 75 BY SENATORS PRICE AND SMITH A RESOLUTION To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of Lloyd Price, American Rhythm and Blues artist. WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the passing of Lloyd Price on May 3, 2021, at the age of eighty-eight; and WHEREAS, Lloyd Price, while a resident of Westchester County, New York, was born on March 9, 1933, and raised in Kenner, Louisiana; his mother, Beatrice Price, owned the Fish 'n' Fry Restaurant where he picked up lifelong interests in business and food from her; and WHEREAS, he received formal training on the trumpet and piano, sang in his church's gospel choir, and was a member of a combo in high school; and WHEREAS, Lloyd Price helped draw national attention to New Orleans' unique and burgeoning Rhythm and Blues (R&B) sound when he recorded his first No. 1 R&B 1952 hit "Lawdy Miss Clawdy"; and WHEREAS, he followed up with singles such as "Oooh-Oooh-Oooh", "Ain't It a Shame", and "Tell Me Pretty Baby", which reached Top 10 R&B between 1952-53; and WHEREAS, due to a stint in the United States Army in Korea, Lloyd Price didn't return to the charts until 1957 with the release of "Just Because" which reached Number three in R&B and became his first pop crossover at no. 29; this was the first release through Price's own KRC Records; and WHEREAS, with distribution through ABC Records, KRC issued several more Price classics: 1958's million-selling no.

Formerly the cool baritone of the Impressions, Jerry "The Ice Man” Butler just returned from an oldies show in Pittsburgh, where he appeared with the Flamingos and the Moonglows. During a conversation in his fifth- floor offices at the County Building, I asKed the CooK County commissioner what goes through his mind when he listens to the permanent magic of the old songs - the stark beauty of "For Your Precious Love," the snap- fingered soul of "It's Alright" and the grizzly power of "Only the Strong Survive." "It's difficult to thinK in those terms," he said. "The one thing that came to my mind was that most of the members in those groups were either dead or no longer in the group. "Those things really flash at you when you're in that environment." Butler will appear in an arena of his own next week in the Moulin Rouge at the Fairmont Hotel, 200 N. Columbus. By all rights, the Impressions should have blazed the same trail of glory as the Temptations. Butler’s appointed lead baritone was the ideal complement for the vulnerable falsetto of Curtis Mayfield. Through such wide emotional range, the Impressions could be masculine with Butler’s booming voice or feminine through Mayfield's soaring sentimentality. Butler and Mayfield were the original river deep, mountain high. Butler formally left the Impressions in 1959 - only a year after their first hit, "For Your Precious Love" - although he continued to collaborate as a songwriter and singer with Mayfield.

“People Get Ready”—The Impressions (1965) Added to the National Registry: 2015 Essay by Brad Erickson (guest post)* Original sleeve As a small, dark child, Curtis Mayfield was stung by the nickname “Smut.” As a songwriter he would transform stigma into anthems of Black pride, yet when praised for his contribution to the Civil Rights Movement, Mayfield demurred, “I’m just an entertainer.” Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield met as teenagers in a Chicago church choir. In 1958, they joined forces with a vocal trio from Tennessee to form the Impressions. By 1962, Mayfield, Sam Gooden and Fred Cash remained. Mayfield wrote the songs and played guitar with nuanced sensitivity. When the group teamed up with producer Johnny Pate in 1963, Pate’s polished arrangements propelled the Impressions to popular success. Curtis Mayfield sings “People Get Ready” in a silken falsetto over pizzicato strings and Sam Gooden responds, “There’s a train a-coming.” Mayfield’s guitar marks time with staccato upstrokes over low French horns while bell-like glockenspiel tones rise to the heavens. “You don’t need no baggage,” sings Mayfield; Gooden and Cash respond, “You just get on board.” This is a train song; this is a gospel song delivering good news. But 1965 was the height of the Civil Rights Movement, when the suppression of Black voters spurred the march from Selma to Montgomery and police assaulted peaceful marchers. To be confined in segregated schools, jobs, or neighborhoods is to lack freedom of movement. To be incarcerated, terrorized or dispossessed—and thus all too often to be Black in America—is to lack the mobility others take for granted.

“I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)”— Otis Redding (1965) Added to the National Registry: 2003 Essay by Cary O’Dell Otis Redding Original label Like a surprising number of America’s most revered and best-known rock ‘n’ roll classics, Otis Redding’s remarkable “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)” originally wasn’t much of a hit. Alarmingly, it didn’t make it above #21 on the pop charts when it was first released in 1965. But, since then, the burning power of Redding’s heartfelt soul has made this record a true standard. As Dave Marsh in his book “The Heart of Rock & Soul” puts it, “[it’s] the ultimate slow dance, a nonpareil seduction song,...a song that will be covered as long as men and women want an excuse to clutch each other tight in public.” It took about two weeks for Redding and co-writer Jerry Butler to take the song from a fragment that Butler first played for Redding in a Buffalo motel room to the final version. It was recorded on April 19, 1965 and put out on the Volt label (a subsidiary of Stax). While the song did have some success on the pop chart, it was far more popular in the R&B rankings; it made it all the way to number two. Otis Redding was born in 1941 in Dawson, Georgia. The son of a gospel-singer preacher and his housekeeper wife, Redding showed an early inclination towards music. Quitting school in his sophomore year, Redding eventually went to work as a member of Little Richard’s house band.
