Around the same time Fujiko Nakaya's video Friends of Minamata Vic­ tims (1972), a record of a sit-in protesting a Japanese factory's negligent disposal of mercury and the ensuing poisoning of the residents of a town, became part of the protest it documente(l. In the mid-'70s, members of Video Hiroba engaged in important cross-cultural ex­ changes. In '73, Hiroba videos were shown at a conference in Vancouver, B.C., and they received encouragement as well from New York documentarians John Reilly and Rudi Stern, who lectured at the Tokyo American Center. In '74 the "Tokyo-New York Video Express" presented the work of 30 Ameri­ can artists along with that of 15 Hiroba members at a hall in Tokyo.

By examining the first two print- ed materials on SAC, the first of which served as an introductory guide to the Center (published on September 1st, 1958), and the second printed exclusively for the Center’s opening (September 13th, 1958), we will consider the Center’s appearance and facilities and point out its functions, which Teshigahara assigned from its begining. After considering the proposals of five short-listed international architects, the Tokyo-based firm of Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa/SANAA Ltd. was chosen to design the new New Museum. SANAA has designed several art museums in Japan with other international projects currently underway. They have proposed a stunning design and ingenious solution to our requirements which will be unveiled in November. The building will be dynamic, unique, and bold , and will be a destination for people interested in contemporary art and architecture around the world. As we move forward in the design development phase, we are simultaneously starting our Capital Campaign for the new building. As of this writing, we are nearly halfway toward reaching our goal required to build this new state-of-the- art facility. We are also expanding our board of trustees and staff.
