Braid Course List 2017 THE ASSOCIATION OF JAMES BRAID COURSES 2016 Rules 1 Tee reservations for a two, three or four ball must be made in advance (at least 24 hours), stating you are booking under the ‘Association of James Braid Courses’ scheme 2 You will be required to provide proof of home club to Professional on your arrival – either handicap certificate or bar card which MUST show your name; a logo on your sweater is NOT acceptable…..cheeky! 3 Bookings will only be accepted based on Club’s tee availability and cannot be accepted with any other offer 4 The green fee being charged is shown below; green fees valid for both ladies and gentlemen 5 These rates are for members of member clubs only and NOT for a group/society. [I have had reports of groups trying to work the system by booking one four ball in one name, then another in another and then another; this is abusing the idea of the Association and will result in clubs refusing your booking/s. Please do not do this] 6 Certain clubs will accept bookings for away day/touring groups and these are signified by G followed by a number signifying the maximum number in a group at the green fee rates shown below. A full list of all participating clubs in this part of the scheme is shown at the end. Groups must be booked well in advance and all members must be members of an Association member club; other members of the group must pay the full green fee. The group organiser will be expected to provide proof of membership of member clubs. James Braid was involved in the design, either originally or the re-design, of more than 400 courses.   • Rothley Park Official Opening
    Rothley Park Official Opening May 1912 The official opening took place on May 1912. In an article in the Dundee Evening Telegraph on the 21st of May 1912, James Sorley wrote: “Rothley Park Golf Club is a new one, and the course has not yet been properly opened. At present we are playing over 12 holes , but we will have at our disposal in a few days 16 holes. When completed the Rothley Course will be 6000 yards, the longest hole measures about 500 yards”. The fact that the golf course consisted of only 12 holes at the time of the official opening probably explains why there was no record of an exhibition match being played at that time. It is interesting to note that in the above photograph, Braid and Vardon are both wearing golf shoes. It would be reasonable to assume that they perhaps had a drive in of some sort, with an exhibition match arranged when the 18 holes were completed. The Great Triumvirate In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a trio of players dominated professional golf to such an extent that they earned a collective nickname. “The Great Triumvirate” of Harry Vardon, J.H. Taylor and James Braid won 16 of the 21 Open Championships held between 1894 and 1914. The members of the Great Triumvirate made a very good living out of Golf Club openings and exhibition matches. The usual fee was £8 plus expenses, at a time when winning the Open Championship was worth £50. In the month of May 1913, Vardon played no less than five exhibition matches at golf clubs all around the country.

  • Golf Golfers to Have Captured All Four of the Modern Five Stamps Featuring Scottish Golf Courses Go on Majors

Royal Mail News The 25p denomination shows the 18th Hole at Muirfield, described by Jack Nicklaus, as “probably the best hole on the best Open Championship course in Britain”. In 1966, when Nicklaus won the Open he joined Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan and Gary Player as the only Golf golfers to have captured all four of the modern Five stamps featuring Scottish golf courses go on majors. The billowing rough was so deep that sale at post offices, the British Philatelic Bureau, Collections, Post Shops Plus, and Philatelic Counters on 5 July 1994. The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers promulgated golf’s first set of rules, The Thirteen Articles, 250 years ago in 1744. Having moved from Leith Links to Musselburgh, they settled in 1891 at Muirfield in East Lothian where The Open Championship was first held there in 1892. It remains one of the world- famed Scottish links on the Open Championship rota. The Open has also been played at the Old Course, St Andrews, Carnoustie, Royal Troon, and the Ailsa, Turnberry, which is the venue for 1994. Doug Sanders, commented “Give me the lost ball and hay concession and you can keep the prize money! The winners of the Open at Muirfield have been:- 1892 Harold Hinton, 1896 Harry Vardon, 1901 and 1906 James Braid, 1912 Ted Ray, 1929 Walter Hagen, 1935 Alf Perry, 1948 Henry Cotton, 1959 Gary Player, 1966 Jack Nicklaus, 1972 Lee Trevino, 1980 Tom Watson, 1987 and 1992 Nick Faldo.     INTRODUCTION The town of Musselburgh has a long association with the game of golf having hosted The Open Championship on the links course on six occasions in the 1870's and 1880's. The town can also boast having five Open Champions, who between them, won eleven championships - more than any other town. When The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers moved to Muirfield from their home at the 9 hole Links Course in 1891, they took with them the venue for the Open. In an attempt to re- establish its association with the Open, Musselburgh Town Council decided to build an 18 hole championship golf course in the town. Unfortunately it was not until the 1930's that suitable land became available and the 5 times Open Champion James Braid, who, in his later years became a renowned golf course architect, was commissioned to design the new course at Monktonhall. He designed a championship standard course, which at 6725 yards long is a true test of golf for even the most accomplished golfer. The new course was officially opened by a fourball of James Braid, Percy Alliss, Henry Cotton and Alf Padgham on 10th May 1938 and has been the home of The Musselburgh Golf Course ever since. For 70 years the layout of the course has remained virtually unchanged, a fact which bears testament to the ability and foresight of its designer. During these years the course has hosted many amateur championships and on two occasions the Scottish Professional Championship. At 6725 yards long and with tree lined fairways and a burn that comes into play at 5 holes, the course is an interesting challenge to all levels of golfer.

    UNLIKE GODOT, THE NEXT GREAT GOLFER ALWAYS SHOWS UP By Ron Sirak • @ronsirak Dec. 12, 2016 Comparing greatness in any sport across generations is pretty much useless since there is no way to factor in changes in equipment, conditioning, coaching and the quality of competition. But history does teach us there is no shortage of genius. Brilliance surfaces sparingly but regularly. In my opinion, golf has produced five dominant players since the U.S. Open joined the Open as a major championship around the turn of the last century. And each dominant player had specific challengers, except for Tiger Woods, who faced a rivalry by committee. In 1900, Harry Vardon made the U.S. Open the fourth of his seven career majors at the age of 30. In 1930, Bobby Jones won the U.S. and British Opens and the U.S. and British Amateurs at 28 then retied to finish with seven pro majors and six amateur titles. In 1950, Ben Hogan, 37, picked up the fourth of his nine majors at the U.S. Open. In 1970, Jack Nicklaus, 30, got the eighth of his 18 pro majors at the Open Championship. In 2000, Woods, 24, won the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship to get to five in a major total that now stands at 14. There is a clear cycle of greatness that produces a breakout player about every 20 to 30 years. By that standard, we are 16 years into the Woods cycle. In addition to the cyclical emergence of a great player there is also the recurrent pattern of a three-way rivalry.

    A SCOTTISH GOLF PIONEER DEVELOPS THE WEST IN AMERICA GOLF COURSE ARCHITECT WILLIAM WATSON 1860-1941 By Dean Knuth William Watson Circa 1920 at age 60 William Watson was an early pioneer in golf course architecture who immigrated from Fife, Scotland to America in 1898. In a successful career he had designed more than 100 golf courses by his retirement in 1929 when the Great Depression began. Many golfers know of Donald Ross and Alister Mackenzie but haven’t heard of Watson, yet many of his courses have survived close to a century or more. Minikahda Club in Minnesota was his first U.S. design and also his first job as head golf professional. He was prolific and a success in California. A number of his other best-known designs have hosted major USGA and PGA National Championships, including Harding Park, San Diego Country Club, the original Brentwood Country Club, Diablo Country Club, Berkeley Country Club and Orinda Country Club. He designed the original The Olympic Club Lake and Ocean courses plus many others which unfortunately did not survive housing developments on land that became more valuable as America grew. He was guided by the primary goal of maintaining naturalness in his designs. Watson wrote:, “A good rule is to stress the importance of fitting in all grading work to harmonize with the surrounding territory, mounds, slopes, grassy hollows, sand pits, all have their values in beautifying the setting of our greens and in giving them distinctive definition — if artificially arranged without appearance of artificiality.” He also believed that a course is more interesting if every green has a character all its own, giving the player something besides the flag to view in approaching the hole.
