ew FIRST PLACE FOR FUN OF Thank you Virginia Association of Fairs!

2018 DATES: Sept. 28 – Oct. 7, 2018 The , Caroline County, VA Visit statefairva.org for updates on what’s new in 2018!

Soaring Into the Next Century !!

The sky’s the limit! Whether our 2017 fair season was ‘off the charts’ with great weather, record attendance and a smiling bottom line, or proved to be a challenge due to circumstances beyond our control, we can all be grateful and encouraged to be part of an industry that is still family focused, aiming our youth into leadership, as well as enjoying life in our ‘today’ while reaching for and enjoying that cutting edge of the future.

How’re we doing that?!? The planned program for this year’s VAF 2018 annual conference at The Homestead is chocked full of topics/speakers/round tables which will address some of the most pressing concerns of our fair operations. AND, you’re going to be treated to pure fun while enjoying one of America’s highest acclaimed resorts.

Great food, fabulous showcase, best trade show, $100 give-aways, showing off our fair’s best, and a special treat! Be sure to get your banquet tickets for Saturday night and enjoy special guest entertainment “Little Texas”.

“It IS a BIG DILL!!!!” One of the grass root qualities any fair/festival can possess and which is the foundation for a successful event – customer service. Let’s always remember the phrase, “Get ready, company’s coming”. Be sure to mark your schedule to view the fun-filled theatre presentation, “Just Give Them the Pickle” on Saturday morning. Be on the lookout for friendly ‘pickles’ all weekend!

Our past 100 years as the Virginia Association of Fairs has given us a great jump start on a stellar next century. Enjoy some fun and relaxation and a refueling at the upcoming annual conference in January. See you there!!!!

Remember Wrigleys,

Betsy Brown, VAF President

Special Saturday Night Entertainment

As part of the Young Country movement of the early ‘90s, Little Texas were responsible for shaking up the country music world with a new, energetic sound that fused the look and attitude of modern rock music with traditional coun- try themes and styles, bringing a much appreciated bolt of life into the genre. For their efforts, country fans the world over richly rewarded the band, buying up over 7 million of their albums, while critics showered them with 3 Grammy nominations plus honors from both the Academy of Country Music (Vocal Group Of The Year) and the Country Music Association (Album Of The Year). Their first radio release in 1991, “Some Guys Have All The Love,” became a Top-10 hit, as did their next single, “First Time For Everything.” After the albumFirst Time For Everything was released, five singles reached the top of the charts. The second album, Big Time, truly was the big time for Little Texas. Early in their career, Little Texas was designated as an arena act. They first signed on as an opener on an arena tour headlined by Clint Black. Later, they traveled with Travis Tritt and Trisha Yearwood on a tour sponsored by Budweiser. After that, they were on their own, with Crown Royal, singing to packed arenas across the United States and Canada. During this time, the band played a part in Common Thread: The Songs of The Eagles, which later earned their first Country Music Association trophy for “Album Of The Year.” Currently, the line up’s on the concert circuit celebrating its official 24th year on the radio since their first single, “Some Guys Have All The Love,” hit the airwaves in 1991. The music the band has generated over the years is timeless, and has been featured on hundreds of television programs and sporting events including Good Morning America, American Idol, Don’t Forget The Words, America’s Got Talent & HBO’s “True Blood,” while “God Blessed Texas” has been the theme music for the Texas Ford Dealers commercials since 1998. This year, Little Texas is breaking new sonic ground with the release of their 8th album, Young For A Long Time. Undoubtedly the band has never sounded more confident, as the chorus of the titular lead off track proudly declares, “Don’t you know by now we’ve got this down / That Friday night fire still hasn’t gone out / We got a rock solid life and a rock n’ roll state of mind / We were born to run / So sit down, son / We’ll show you just how it’s done / ‘Cause we’ve been young for a long time.” The musicianship has only improved with age as well with Porter Howell truly coming into his own as the band’s lead vocalist in addition to his dazzling lead guitar work, and backed by the always solid playing of drummer Del Gray. “Young For A Long Time pretty much runs the gamut of everything we’ve ever done, plus takes us down some new roads as well,” Propes continues, “the vocals are there, the guitar work is there, the party songs are there, the ‘make you cry’ love songs, the songs about Texas. We even dive off into swamp rock and torch music, so each song has a totally different fuel behind it.” “The four of us appreciate each other and still have a ball on stage,” says drummer Gray of the band’s chemistry on stage after all this time. “There is a comfort level that happen to us when we play together that can only happen with 20-something years of experience.” Proud Sponsor of the Virginia Association of Fairs and The Miss Virginia Association of Fairs Pageant

The Virginia Association of Fairs embraces and promotes two youth scholarship programs, the Youth Leadership Award Program and the Miss VAF Scholarship Pageant. Each year young people are awarded approximately $10,000 in scholarship funds during the VAF Conference. Award winnings are paid to the winner's choice of higher education institutions in the award winner's name. The educational institution may be a college, university or technical school.

Proceeds from the sale of items donated by fairs and associate members during the Live and Silent Auctions are directed exclusively to the Youth Leadership Award Program fund. Additionally, proceeds from the Raffle ticket sale are for the sole purpose of the Youth Leadership Award Program.

The YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD PROGRAM is open to youth ages 14-19 as of January 1, 2018, who have been an active participant in a VAF member fair or festival.

The Youth Leadership Award Program contest goals are as follows:

1. Recognize superior leadership characteristics among junior members of the Association and the industry

2. Encourage and develop leadership and speaking skills among junior mem- bers so that they will be able to serve their local boards, the industry, and their local communities.

Six young leaders will participate in this year's competition on Saturday, January 6th at the OMNI Homestead Resort. The 2017 VAF Youth Leadership Scholarship competition partici- pants will be:

The MISS VIRGINIA ASSOCIATION OF FAIRS PAGEANT is held annually at the VAF Conference. This year twenty-four young ladies, Queens from their respective or regional fair, will compete in the 2017 Miss Virginia Association of Fairs Scholarship Pageant on Sunday, January 8, at 10:00AM in the Commonwealth Room.

The Virginia Association of Fairs Board of Directors welcomes these young ladies, chosen in competitions among their peers from their respective member fair across the Commonwealth, to participate in the Miss Virginia Association of Fairs (Miss VAF) Scholarship Pageant.

The Board’s purpose in sponsoring the Miss VAF Scholarship Pageant is to select the young lady that best represents the values that Virginians hold dear. These include, but not limited to, a nice appearance and presentation, well-spoken, well-behaved, and knowledge of a wide array of topics. The lady chosen as Miss Virginia Association of Fairs will represent not only the association, but the fair industry, her fair and her community. The Board’s expectation is that the Miss Virginia Association of Fairs be a responsible individual, whose desire is to con- tribute to the greater good through education, volunteerism and personal contribution.

In 1997, Virginia Association of Fairs Executive Director, Hazel Staley, introduced the formation of an annual “Fair Person of the Year” award. The purpose of the award is to give fairs the opportunity to express appreciation for the leadership, dedication, and often unnoticed 'grunt work' performed by this person to make their Fair the best it can be. The first recipient was Bud Walsh, New Valley County Fair in 1998. The award has be- come a highly coveted acknowledgment among peers, and is awarded at the VAF annual convention banquet.

Presenter Alan Nogiec Dennis Gammon Presenter Mehrle Staley

In 2016, Field Day of the Past celebrated its 25th year. There has been one constant throughout that quarter of a century – our volunteer Dennis Gammon. In his time with this association, Dennis has been involved in almost every aspect of the establishment and organization of our show. From the early years, he worked on the structures which have now become an integral part of the Field Day event. He helped to build our petting zoo, the first permanent structure on the grounds, our announcer’s stand, an engine building and the Field Day Post Office. Dennis “stole” the idea of an operating post office on the grounds during the fair from another show. He came back to Field Day and constructed the building, then nagged until we got permission to operate an official post office at Field Day of the Past. It has been in operation at our show since that time. When Springfield Baptist Church was donated to the organization, Dennis worked tirelessly for months prepar- ing the church for the move to our grounds. Once the building was in place, he spent the entire summer reconstructing the interior of the building in preparation for the show. The next year, he tore down old walls, dragging in any volunteer possible, including his own children, until the interior boasted all new sheet rock and was painted. He rewired the structure then search diligently for lighting which he thought was appropriate to the old building. Dennis has worked building, repairing or modifying almost every structure on the grounds, including the cov- ered bridge, the bleachers, the large engine building and a metal working shop. He organized the spoon factory, a work shop in our sawmill building, and our sorghum complex. In 2015, Dennis designed and was instrumental in the construction of a storage/exhibit hall on the grounds. In addition, Dennis created much of our infrastructure at Field Day of the Past – lying electrical and water lines and developing plans for these systems. If anyone wants to know why a light doesn’t work or where the water lines run, they are sent to Dennis. Heart attacks, lung surgery and a bout with lung cancer have not stopped him. Dennis has been on the grounds for every event, show or otherwise, which Field Day of the Past has hosted for 25 years. He has suggested new exhibits and demonstrations which have become part of the show tradition. He has worked behind the counter selling drinks and cheese in the Short Pump Grocery Store, operating engines in our large engines exhibit, including the operation of the steam operated Corliss Engine, making ice cream spoons in Grasberg- er’s Spoon Factory, and making walking sticks on our machinery during the show. Although the walking sticks are offered for sale at the show, it’s not unusual to “catch” Dennis passing them out (along with Field Day buttons) free to the young children who attend. In 2014, it was Dennis who headed up the effort to reorganize our farm exhibit to make it more visitors friendly and in 2015, he pushed to get the antique hay baler which had been donated put in operating condition – and it was in operation during the show. He also outfitted the newly donated corn crib in the manner which was both visitor friendly and appropriate for the time period. For several years, Dennis has also undertaken the growing of tobacco and cotton on our show grounds to be used in exhibits for the show. He plants the cotton seeds and young tobacco plants, works the weeds out of them, checks for tobacco worms, waters, fertilizers and coddles the plants throughout the season, harvesting in September in time for the annual event. If you visit our show and want to know how an engine works, how an ice cream spoon is make, how to pick cotton or tobacco, or what a piece of farm machinery does, just ask Dennis. He’ll tell you. During show days, he is also “on call” for any water, electrical, or other emergency. In our off season, he works on bathrooms, winterizes the machinery, rebuilds engines and originates new ideas for the next show. Dennis suggested the idea of our holiday celebration which serves as an open house to our community and is geared to holiday activities for the entire family. This “Celebration of the Season” has become an important part of our offerings and now attracts several hundred visitors. Since his retirement, Dennis volunteers at the grounds almost every day, including weekends year- round. He is our “go to” guy for almost every program in which we become involved. It was also Dennis who suggested we place our emergency numbers on the back of the volunteer name tags which are worn throughout the show, thus placing these important numbers close at hand in the event of an emergen- cy on the grounds. It was Dennis who attended the Emergency Action Plan seminars at the IAFE convention in Las Vegas and came back adamant that we develop our own plan for Field Day. Dennis suggested that we initiate the Volunteer of the Year program in 2006 and became our second Volunteer of the Year in 2007. Dennis has inventoried acquisitions, made pickles at the show, and entertained children and adults with his tales. There is not an area of our grounds or of our show of which Dennis does not have intimate knowledge. SERVICE TO THE FAIR INDUSTRY For more than ten years, Dennis has attended both the VAF Conference and the IAFE conference in Las Vegas where he has participated in seminars, workshops, tabletop and round table discussions, bringing back ideas which would help Field Day, and offering to other attendees the ideas which have worked at our show. He helped organize and attended the VAF requested Central Virginia Regional Meeting at Field Day – a meeting in which fairs in our area were invited to the grounds to discuss issues which were a concern to all. During the VAF annual conference in January 2016, Dennis was one of the people who originated the idea of the VAF Commemorative Quilt. The quilt was meant to represent all VAF fairs and to be auctioned at the 2017 VAF Convention to benefit the Scholarship Fund. Last year, Dennis was also one of the biggest supporters of the first Field Day of the Past school trip by 175 first graders to the show grounds last Spring. The trip underscored his belief that the fair industry needs to reach out to children of all ages to educate them and attempt to bring them “into the fold.” He had a hand in developing the program, designing the booklet which was given to each child and devising hands on methods to teach them. Dennis has never met a stranger when it comes to promoting Field Day of the Past and the fair industry in Virgin- ia. He will exchange ideas and discuss the working operation of an event to anyone at any time, for any length of time. He is open to suggestions and is quick to offer his own ideas on how to operate and promote a fair and the industry. Dennis attends local Chamber of Commerce functions and participates in public relations events, including school functions, heritage and similar events, which promote Field Day of the Past and the industry. He passes out Field Day newspapers everywhere he goes and invites strangers who wander onto the show grounds during the off season for a tour of our grounds. In 2015 and 2016, Dennis co-hosted a “behind the scenes” tour of Field Day of the Past for the local historical society. At 75 years old, Dennis Gammon is still the number one volunteer who exemplifies a dedication to and love of the fair industry.
