North, East & West Voluntary Support Group of

Welcome to the February Newsletter for the N,E&W Cumbria group of Coeliac UK. This time around we have our new Feb feature; YAKS on Tour. There’s also more fun, frolics and no information at all about celebrities and reality tv shows. YAY! 2016 Storm Desmond Hits!

Storm Desmond caused chaos in Cumbria and a number of local Coeliacs were flooded out. Gluten Free food producers came to the rescue by supplying large quantities of Bread, Rolls, Christmas Cake, Biscuits, Flour, Cereals and many more to help local people in those first few days after disaster struck. Group organisers Jean and Peter, spent 2 weeks clocking up thousands of miles across Cumbria delivering amongst other things, over 3,500 loaves of bread!

One resident who was flooded out in the centre of expressed her thanks, commenting that there had been lots of help for flood victims, but support for her particular dietary needs was Food arrived in great quantities extremely helpful. and took over Jean and Peter’s house whilst waiting for Some food was given to local food banks and distribution to Cumbrian Flimby and Keswick deserve special mentions for Coeliacs. their help and support. One other distribution centre didn’t cover themselves with glory, but we won’t mention them here!

Special thanks also has to go to the following companies who supplied thousands of food items: Udi’s, Juvela, Pulsetta, Bells of Lazonby, Schar, Sainsburys and Tesco.

Michael Rigg also helped with distribution and none of this would have happened without the help of Mike and Susan Taylor who stored pallet loads of food for us! Fingers crossed that Cumbria won’t need similar support in the near future but if you do need support, please contact us and we will do our best to help.
