Beth Troutman Is the Lead Host of the Popular Nationally Syndicated Show, Rightthisminute Beth Troutman is the lead host of the popular nationally syndicated show, RightThisMinute. Her extraordinary ability to ad-lib and her girl-next-door personality took the unscripted show from 40 TV markets in 2011 to more than 160 markets by 2013. In 2014, RTM was also added to the prime-time lineup on HLN. Beth’s path to an on-camera career makes her one of the most unique voices on TV. She earned bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and Women’s Studies from UNC and then packed her bags and headed West. After cold-faxing her resume to the offices of the Emmy-winning series The West Wing, she spent the next four years working with the show’s Executive Producer and Director, Alex Graves. At age 27, Beth was asked to be the first woman to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in North Carolina’s 8th District. She received tremendous support from her co-workers at The West Wing. Martin Sheen even joined her on the campaign trail. Although she did not win the close race, Beth’s performance during a televised debate landed her a job as the host of the morning show FOX News Rising. She covered everything from politics to pop culture and was the Red Carpet correspondent for American Idol during three of its most popular seasons. In 2009, Beth became the host of the national morning show The Balancing Act on LifetimeTelevision. In addition to her in-studio work, she was the host, writer, and producer of the show’s successful travel segments in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Miami, Las Vegas, Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, Savannah, and Richmond. Beth is also a voiceover artist, a motivational speaker and media consultant. Contact Beth. .

The West Wing Weekly 7.02: “The Mommy Problem” [Intro Music] JOSH: You're listening to The West Wing Weekly. I’m Joshua Malina. HRISHI: And I’m Hrishikesh Hirway. And today we’re talking about episode 2 from season 7, it’s called “The Mommy Problem.” JOSH: It was written by Eli Attie, it was directed by Alex Graves, and it first aired on October 2nd, 2005. HRISHI: In this episode, the astronauts who are stuck in the Space Station have been rescued, but the investigation into the leak about the secret military space shuttle gets ratcheted up as a grand jury gets convened. So, nobody is going to emergency, but somebody is going to jail. JOSH: Exactly. HRISHI: It’s all bad news for the Santos/McGarry campaign. We’re also having trouble getting their message out and projecting an image of Santos that is substantial. So Josh hires a Communications Director, and together they try to deal with the good luck or bad luck of Santos getting called up for Marine Reserve duty. JOSH: Very nice. Substantos. HRISHI: [laughing] Exactly. We may have covered this a little bit before. I think Richard Schiff mentioned that he was not a fan of the second half of season six and season seven, and I feel like you can hear it in his voice just when he says [West Wing Episode 7.02 excerpt] TOBY: Previously on The West Wing [end excerpt] JOSH: [laughing] That’s funny. HRISHI: What did you think of this episode? JOSH: I liked this episode.

The West Wing Weekly 4.06: “Game On” Guests: Bradley Whitford and Rob Lowe [Intro Music] HRISHI: You’re listening to The West Wing Weekly, where it is a very special and exciting day. JOSH: A Very Special Episode…of Blossom. HRISHI: I’m Hrishikesh Hirway. JOSH: And I’m Joshua Malina. HRISHI: You may know Joshua Malina from such things as this episode. JOSH [laughter]: Oh, man. Is there gonna be a lot of this? HRISHI: How did it feel to watch yourself on screen for the first time? JOSH: I’m almost embarrassed to admit I had butterflies in my stomach when I watched it. HRISHI: That’s great. JOSH: And it wasn’t nerves or anything, it’s literally like I was tying in organically to the excitement of that job and getting that job. I didn’t expect it at all. But yeah, that was like a very special time of my life, and as I started to watch it I just got, like, chills. HRISHI: You had a Proustian moment? JOSH: Yeah, exactly. HRISHI: You were transported. That’s great. In this episode, of course, we’re talking about “Game On.” It’s episode six from season four. JOSH: It was written by Aaron Sorkin and Paul Redford. It was directed by Alex Graves, and it first aired on October 30, 2002. HRISHI: This episode is a famous one because it features President Bartlet debating Governor Ritchie. There’s also some stuff about Qumar, there’s some stuff about Toby and Andy, but the real headline is that baby-faced Joshua Malina makes his first appearance as Will Bailey, who’s running the Horton Wilde campaign from a mattress store in Newport Beach.

  • On the Shoulders of Giants: How Aaron Sorkin's Sports Night
ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS: How Aaron Sorkin’s Sports Night Portrayed the Sports Journalist as a Modern, Educated Professional While Still Fitting the Classic Molds of Journalists in Popular Culture. By Eric Alvarez Abstract Aaron Sorkin’s Sports Night focuses on the events that unfold in the newsroom of a nightly sports highlight show. The impulse of the series stems from the relationships amongst the show’s two anchors, three producers and its managing editor. As individuals, the journalists are smart, talented and dedicated in their professional lives. Yet, despite their capabilities and professionalism, each echoes characteristics and faces problems similar to those of journalists in classic popular culture. They often put the job over their personal lives and struggle when faced with the consequences. But in the end, they always tend to band together as a newsroom family. * * * “Five minutes to air. First team in the studio.1” The voice echoes through the newsroom at 10:55 p.m. It is the nightly wake-up call for the Sports Night team. Journalists both in front of the camera and in the control room scramble as the clock ticks toward show time. And then it starts. The one thing that gives the journalists a home, a family and a sense of accomplishment. ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS: How Aaron Sorkin’s Sports Night Portrayed the Sports Journalist as a Modern, Educated Professional While Still Fitting the Classic Molds of Journalists in Popular Culture. By Eric Alvarez 2 The team of anchors and producers creates a nightly, one-hour highlight show from New York, “the most magnificent city in the world.

Abstract When it aired in Fall 2011 on Fox, Terra Nova was an experiment in creating a cult television program that appealed to a mass audience. This thesis is a case study of that experiment. I conclude that the show failed because of its attempts to maintain the sophistication, complexity and innovative nature of the cult genre while simultaneously employing an overly simplistic narrative structure that resembles that of mass audience programming. Terra Nova was unique in its transmedia approach to marketing and storytelling, its advanced special effects, and its dystopian speculative fiction premise. Terra Nova’s narrative, on the other hand, presented a nostalgically simple moralistic landscape that upheld old-fashioned ideologies and felt oddly retro to the modern SF TV audience. Terra Nova’s failure suggests that a cult show made for this type of broad audience is impossible.
