ASIAN AND AFRICAN STUDIES, 78, 2009, 2, 305-323 CALVINISM IN THE CONTEXT OF THE AFRIKANER NATIONALIST IDEOLOGY Jela D o bo šo vá Institute of Oriental Studies, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Klemensova 19, 813 64 Bratislava, Slovakia [email protected] Calvinism was a part of the mythic history of Afrikaners; however, it was only a specific interpretation of history that made it a part of the ideology of the Afrikaner nationalists. Calvinism came to South Africa with the first Dutch settlers. There is no historical evidence that indicates that the first settlers were deeply religious, but they were worshippers in the Nederlands Hervormde Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church), which was the only church permitted in the region until 1778. After almost 200 years, Afrikaner nationalism developed and connected itself with Calvinism. This happened due to the theoretical and ideological approach of S. J.du Toit and a man referred to as its ‘creator’, Paul Kruger. The ideology was highly influenced by historical developments in the Netherlands in the late 19th century and by the spread of neo-Calvinism and Christian nationalism there. It is no accident, then, that it was during the 19th century when the mythic history of South Africa itself developed and that Calvinism would play such a prominent role in it. It became the first religion of the Afrikaners, a distinguishing factor in the multicultural and multiethnic society that existed there at the time. It legitimised early thoughts of a segregationist policy and was misused for political intentions. Nolte: There are many interesting parallels between the South African Coloured people and the Nnerican Negro. Each is a group today only because colour singles them out for dis- crimination. They each have developed a culture that has little in common with that of the tribal African. And perhaps their most striking s iw.ilarity'lies in their mutual desire for full cit.zenship in their respective countries. However, while the position of the Negro ]as improved considerably in the last fifteen years the opposite has been true in South Africa. e Coloured population has not yet reached tle toint where they have a strong group consciousness, nor do they have the hope of a national government implementing a consti- tution in which their rights are fully guaranteed. They lack what ot-er South African racial groups have and that is a distinct cultural identity of their own. Their culture is that of the White South African, especially the Afrikaner. Even the Cape Malays, who with trei: loslem faith are about the most 'foreign' of the Coloureds, speak Afrikaans. Because there is so little difference in culture, light skins have made possible easy entry into the hite community. One social worker estimates that in recent years 25,000 have left the Cape to establish White identities in the Transvaal. -

Coetzee, Diary of a Bad Year (2007) In 1825, the Russian Tsar Nicholas I suppressed an uprising of 3,000 army ofcers against his assumption of the throne, following its surprising renunciation by his brother Constantine. Te members of the group in which the revolt was seeded, called simply the “Decembrists” in what is considered a defning event of the Russian intelligentsia’s formation, divided their aims across two main factions: the moderate Northerners sought a constitutional monarchy and the serfs’ liberation, while a more radical Southern contingent sought the end of the monarchy and mass redistribution of land.1 Tsar Nicholas’s response was more direct. Beset by logistical mishaps over a day-long stand- of, the Decembrists eventually faced open fre by around 9,000 tsarist troops. Many of the rebels were shot and then dumped in Saint Petersburg’s icy Neva River, and those who survived were executed, lashed, or exiled to Siberia.2 It is a story of tragic proportions, chronicled most famously in the poetry of Alexander Pushkin, the so-called Father of Russian Literature. In the background of this lofy act of rebellion, though, is a macabre fecklessness that infects Russia’s legacy no less than its nobler aspects do. -

Marlene van Niekerk Time: 13 to 14h, 23 September 2016 Locatie: VOC Zaal, Bushuis, University of Amsterdam (map) The question here is whether and how certain forms of augmented, patterned and foregrounded language known as “poetry” matter in times of extreme crisis. The crisis of the Anthropocene involves a paradigm shift of the notion of the “human” itself and also the relationship of the “human” to “Nature”. Since 1950 humans have become a marked geophysical force that has changed earth systems to such a degree that several planetary boundaries are already seriously violated. In her response (climate warming, biodiversity loss, acidification of the seas, the disturbance of the nitrogen/phosphate cycles), the earth, now understood as a secular Gaia, has revealed herself as a finely tuned reactive entity – not only wholly materially transcendent but also utterly indifferent to us. We now relate to her, not necessarily as exceptional human beings but as one type of earthbound critter amongst others that need to survive in the severely damaged and increasingly dangerous conditions of our own making, the ravenous excesses of the Capitalocene. As poets we have to find radical and critical alternatives to our Beautiful Soul habits of aesthetic distancing from/objectification of and immersion in “Nature”. We have to face Gaia with a new respons-ability. What kind of ethos, modes and voices, what kinds of political interventions, can one try to map for the earthbound poet? And who cares? Marlene van Niekerk is one of South Africa’s most influential and thought provoking writers. -

It does so by analysing two recent South-Afia oels i.e. J.M Coetzees Disgrace (1999) and Marlene van Niekerks Agaat (2006). Both Disgrace and Agaat are examples of how the singularity of great literary works needs an interdisciplinary approach that does justice to the way in which a novel is part of, and simultaneously co-constructs, the discourses on history, identity and citizenship. The erstwhile hegemonic identity of apartheid, ‘the Afrikaner’, University of Pretoria, was a product of Afrikaner nationalism. The Evolution and Fall of the South African Apartheid State: A Political Economy Perspective• John M. Luiz Abstract: The article reviews the history of state intervention in South Africa's political economy. Both the political and economic evolution of the apartheid state are traced. More imponantly, it appraises the erosion of the apartheid state from the 1970s onwards as a result of the growing costs of apartheid and the increasing challenges it faced as South African society became increasingly mobilized. This is evidenced in the rise of tax revolts, paramilitary forces, people's courts, crime rate, and the collapse of black local authorities. Finally, it evaluates the strength of the apartheid state and argues that it represents a strong state within a weak one. The state in effect had a schizoid existence possessing pockets of extraordinary strength but with its power being narrowly diffused. The result was the slow but steady collapse of the state that led to the negotiation of a new constitutional settlement from a position of weakness. l. lntroduction The "grand plan" of apartheid required enormous supremacy by the central agent, the state. The state fashioned almost every facet of South African life. Its intervention in the economy determined the course of industrialization and the character of social relations. It co-<>pted white suppon through rewards and enforced black compliance through its security system. Its disintegration in the last decade is not surprising. However, it is remarkable that the state was able to manage this complex system whilst simultaneously directing the transformation of the South African economy. -

Upheaval About a Song 1.1 THE “DE LA REY” DEBATE In the summer of 2007, it started with small groups of fans bringing the old apartheid flag of South Africa to Bok van Blerk concerts. The young Afrikaners would wrap the orange, blue, and white flag around them as they sang along to van Blerk’s song “De La Rey.” It was a typical rock song, almost a military march with a catchy melody, but it was the lyrics that made the song a hit. -

Historia 55,2, November 2010, pp 121-146 The local role of a Wellington Afrikaner Broederbond branch, 1937–1994 Johan Zaaiman* Introduction The history of the Afrikaner Broederbond (AB) is well documented. Its functioning is closely examined in the books by Ivor Wilkins and H. Strydom,1 and by J.H.P. Serfontein.2 In Hermann Giliomee’s recent work, the influence of the AB has also received attention.3 According to Giliomee it is a misconception, perpetuated by South African historiography, that the Broederbond’s influence was on a par with that of the NP.4 The Afrikaner Broederbond itself has also produced histories of the society,5 and in 2009, Rev Nico Smith published his inside perspective on the AB.6 The aim of this article is to contribute to the discussion on the role of the AB in the politics of South Africa by focusing on the local functioning of the AB. This is done by examining the minutes of one of the oldest AB branches, the branch in Wellington, a Western Cape rural community, from 1937 to 1994.7 It is clear that the results of this study cannot be generalised to include other communities, especially those in the north of the country, because the political orientation of the southern and northern Afrikaners differed significantly, with those in the south being more accommodating, especially towards the coloured population.8 Another unique factor of Afrikaner politics in Wellington was that black people formed a very small minority of the local population; issues on coloureds thus featured more prominently in discussions in this AB branch.
