The competition is open to all Kingston borough businesses and is a great opportunity for entrants to be recognised for their innovation and excellence. Don’t forget to submit your entry by 27 June. At the recent Annual General Meeting our new President, Bruce Burrowes, announced the Chamber will support Friends of Dysart School as its nominated charity for the coming year. The school is a provision for pupils, from Kingston and beyond, who have a range of severe and complex learning disabilities. Dysart is highly commended for the work it does and I know our members will do all they can to assist our fund-raising activities throughout the year. The 2014 awards, organised by Kingston Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Kingstonfirst and the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, were officially launched at Warren House in April. Entries are being invited in 12 categories with all companies going forward to the sale overall Business of the starts Year title. The artnership is known as the Integrated Business Support group (IBuS). Early successes of the group include reviving the annual Business Expo event, the Business Excellence Awards programme and support for extending business opportunities around major borough events like the Prudential RideLondon cycle races. The group have pooled all services offered into a single searchable database which will shortly be available on the business pages of the Council’s website. Other priorities of the group are: attracting funding, incubation of new businesses, local skills development, building a landlord dialogue, bringing empty shops back into use, reducing business crime, enterprise and entrepreneur development and data acquisition.     REACH 04 KINGSTON The Thames Landscape Strategy Review 2 1 3 Landscape Character Reach No 4 KINGSTON 4.04.1 Overview 1994-2012 • The Kingston reach has undergone a dramatic change over the past 15 years. This is the result of a combination of factors – the town centre’s status as a regional centre, and the survival into the fourth quarter of the 20 th century of its traditional industrial base, much of it based on the river that has now largely been redeveloped. • The Surrey side has a livelier leisure-based waterfront now than it did in the late 1980s – and a continuous river walk – and has become an important and attractive leisure and cultural destination. • Timber-yards and boat-yards in Hampton Wick, the Power Station and British Aerospace in Kingston have disappeared and the riverside is more densely built up. • The character of Kingston is still assured by the rare mix of rural seclusion (on the towpath to Ham and Teddington), a major shopping centre grown around the historic market town, and a charming residential suburbia along the river. • Development of Charter Quay which enabled the continuous river walk, wetland area and construction of the Rose Theatre • There has been a concerted effort with projects and strategies to reverse the historic impression of Kingston ‘turning its back on the river’, through joint action by the Borough, Kingston First and the TLS to improve landscaping and street furniture, and integrate wildlife and boat activity with the recreational uses. This has helped to balance the intensity of development, so that the river plays an increasingly large part in the life of the town.

The assessment finds that there are considerable opportunities to enhance the historic environment of Kingston Town Centre, for example in the public realm and setting of Kingston Guildhall, the Hogsmill River and Coronation Stone, and in the relationship of a leisure centre and other development on the Kingfisher site to the Public Library and Museum and adjoining streets. The options in the Feasibility Stage Report: Guildhall Masterplan (EPR Architects, February 2018) and the Kingfisher Leisure Centre: Concept Design Report (Faulkner Browns Architects, April 2021) also contain elements of risk. Some of these, such as alterations to the interior of the Guildhall and possible rooftop development, are medium risks that can be addressed through design development.
