MEMBER NEWS Memory Café in the heart of Kingston May saw the launch of Home Instead’s Memory Café at the Rose Theatre in Kingston. The idea of the memory café came about through the needs of one of their client’s daughters – her mother suffers from dementia and she couldn’t find anywhere in Kingston to take her that didn’t feel institutionalised ...and where she could get a good cup of coffee!

Clare Jefferies, owner of Home Instead, saw there was a real lack of dementia services in Kingston, so she decided to open and fund the memory cafés on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month offering morning and afternoon sessions. These sessions recognise that not everyone over a certain age wants to be regarded as old and therefore the activities involve stimulating reminiscence conversations; brain stimulating Zumba; singing for the brain; art and sensory flower work. All the activities available are mindful and respectful of who the attendees are and the dementia they suffer.

The Memory Café was officially opened by the Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Penny Sheldon. Penny expressed her excitement at Kingston having this new service and congratulated Home Instead, saying what they have done is incredible! Family members are also invited to attend and enjoy the atmosphere, and share experiences with other carers and drink good coffee. Refugee Action Kingston (RAK), a local independent registered charity, exists to enable people from refugee backgrounds in Kingston and surrounding areas to become active and accepted participants in our local communities.

All our clients show resilience and determination to adjust to change and become independent. However, one of the barriers they face when trying to get into employment is related to their lack of understanding of the UK recruitment requirements. As a result, although the skills and experience of people in Kingston with refugee backgrounds are representative of those required by the local market, they struggle to find jobs.

Since October 2013, RAK have been guiding and supporting 44 clients through various stages of the UK job search process, from sourcing opportunities, placing applications, understanding of the interview process as well as raising awareness of the terms and conditions of employment in the UK. We are looking for opportunities locally for our clients who are keen to work or volunteer as cleaners, administrators, qualified veterinary assistants, teachers, engineers, interpreters and ICT professionals. If you are able to contribute by offering a voluntary or work experience placement, please contact us.
