In case of failure, it is death that awaits the suitors who dare to take up the challenge. A mysterious prince presents himself with the right answers. If Turandot does not discover the name of the reckless stranger before dawn, she will have to keep his promise and marry her in spite of herself. Soprano Christine Goerke plays the role of the ruthless Chinese princess while Roberto Aronica will sing Prince Calàf's famous '' Nessun dorma '' in the colorful setting of Franco Zeffirelli, which magnifies the oriental exoticism of the Puccini's work. Composer Giacomo Puccini Production Franco Zeffirelli Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin Cast Christine Goerke Eleonora Buratto Roberto Aronica James Morris (soprano) (soprano), (tenor), (baryton-bass) (Turandot), (Liù), (Calàf), (Timur) . However, Monsieur de Brétigny, a friend of Manon's cousin, does not intend to put aside his pretensions to possess the girl, that the promises of a life full of richness succeed in convincing for a time to abandon his beloved . In this production signed by the French director Laurent Pelly, stars of the rising American scene give freshness to the drama of Massenet: Lisette Oropesa will Epicurean Manon and Michael Fabiano his devoted Des Grieux. Composer Jules Massenet Production Laurent Pelly Conductor Maurizio Benini Cast Lisette Oropesa Michael Fabiano Artur Ruciński (soprano) (ténor) (tenor) (Manon) (Chevalier des Grieux) (Lescaut) Live from New York Saturday 9th Nov. 6.25pm While on a trip to Nagasaki, Lieutenant Pinkerton lightly negociates a marriage contract with a young geisha named Cio-Cio-San, or Madame Butterfly. When he returns to America, the young wife waits patiently for the return of her beloved, whose son she has had. Pinkerton, however, did not intend to fulfill his commitments and when he returns to Japan, it is with another woman on his arm. Mrs. Butterfly, she does not intend to undo the ties that bind her to her American husband. The cinematographic staging of Anthony Minghella charms with its delicacy and amplifies the solitary drama of the heroine. Plácido Domingo adds a feather to his cap by playing for the first time the role of the wise consul Sharpless. Composer Giacomo Puccini ProductionAnthony Minghella Conductor Pier Giorgio Morandi Cast Hui He Elisabeth DeShong, Andrea Carè Plácido Domingo (soprano) (mezzo-soprano) (tenor) (tenor) (Cio-Cio-San) (Suzuki) (Pinkerton) (Sharless) Live from New York Saturday 23th Nov. 6.25pm Philip Glass Akhenaton is the son of the powerful pharaoh Amenophis III. When he reaches the throne, he realizes that the clergy are corrupt and take advantage of the offerings reserved for the gods. This leads him to question not only the foundations of the religious tradition, but also the organization of Egyptian society as a whole, thus provoking the uprising of the religious elites and the people against him. The life and mystical beliefs of the pharaoh Akhenaton inspired Philip Glass an intense and captivating opera still unpublished on the New York scene, with acrobatic choreographies perfectly aligned with the score. Another first, that of the talented conductor Karen Kamensek who officiates for the first time at the Met. Composer Philip Glass Production Phelim McDermott Conductor Karen Kamensek Cast Disella Lárusdóttir J'nai Bridges Anthony Roth Constanzo (soprano) (mezzo-soprano) (conter-tenor) (Queen Tye) (Nerfertiti) (Akhnaten) Live from New York Saturday 11th Jan. 6.25pm Alban Berg Wozzeck is an anxious soldier haunted by visions of death and apocalypse and subjected to the experiences of an ill-intentioned doctor who despises him. Marie, who had a child of Wozzeck without going through the sacred union of marriage, moves away from him because of its gloomy hallucinations and is easily seduced by the Drum Major, much to the chagrin of the poor manhandled soldier. Created at the end of the First World War, this Expressionist jewel, which is one of the most important operas of the 20th century, paints with intensity the dismay of a victim of a corrupt society. Baritone Peter Mattei performs for the first time the role of Wozzeck in a staging by William Kentridge, producer of among others thinks cartoons and film projections. Composer Alban Berg Production William Kentridge Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin Cast Peter Mattei Elsa van den Heever Christopher Ventris (baryton) (soprano) (tenor) (Wozzeck) (Marie) (le Tambour-Major) Live from New York Saturday 1st Feb. 6.25pm Georges &Ira Gershwin Life goes on at Catfish Row, near the old Charleston Harbor in South Carolina. Men play dice while a woman sings a lullaby to her child. But when the thug Crown loses the game and kills his opponent, he flees the city, leaving behind his wife Bess who finds himself left to herself. Only Porgy, the crippled beggar of the neighborhood, helps the beautiful. Mixing jazz with traditional orchestral music, this opera draws its sources from American folklore. A work of captivating originality, in which we recognize in particular the timeless air of Summertime. Composer George & Ira Gershwin Production James Robinson Conductor David Robertson Cast Eric Owens Angel Blue Frederick Ballentine Alfred Walker (baryton) (soprano) (tenor) (baryton) (Porgy) (Bess) (Sportin' Life) (Crown) Live from New York Saturday 29th Feb. 6.25pm Geor Friedrich Haendel When Agrippina learns that her husband, the Emperor Claudius, died at sea, she is determined to place her son Nero on the throne. She is about to achieve her ends when Claude reappears miraculously. He was saved from drowning by Otho, who tells Agrippina that the Emperor has chosen him to succeed him, but that he prefers the love of Poppea to the throne... Not previously seen at the Met, Haendel's Agrippina illustrates the baroque repertoire that is poorly represented in the house. The staging by Sir David McVicar, transposes the story into an imaginary present where the Roman Empire would never have collapsed, with the American diva Joyce DiDonato interpreting the ambitious wife and mother. Composer Georg Friedrich Haendel Production Sir David McVicar Conductor Harry Bicket Cast Brenda Rae Joyce DiDonato Matthew Rose Lestyn Davies (soprano) (mezzo-soprano) (bass) (contre-tenor) (Poppée) (Agrippine) (Claude) (Othon) Live from New York Saturday 14th March 5.25pm Richard Wagner Blaspheming during the passage of a difficult course, a Dutch sailor sentenced his ship to roam the waters, his crew only being able to land once every seven years. Arrived on a Norwegian coast, the unfortunate sailor finally intends to find the redemption that only the absolute love of a woman can grant him. When he meets the beautiful Senta, he is allowed to hope what he dared not see. Québec's François Girard transforms the New York scene into a giant painting that accentuates the fantastic dimension of this nugget of Wagnerian youth, where unconditional love can be so powerful as to grant salvation to the damned navigator played by Bryn Terfel. Composer Richard Wagner Production François Girard Conductor Valery Gergiev Cast Sir Bryn Terfel Anja Kampe Franz-Josef Selig Sergey Skorokhodov (baryton-bass) (soprano) (bass) (tenor) (Le Hollandais) (Senta) (Daland) (Erik) Live from New York Saturday 25th Apr. 6.25pm Giacomo Puccini The political prisoner Angelotti has fled from his place of detention and finds help from his friend painter Cavaradossi. Baron Scarpia, chief of the police, suspecting the complicity of the painter, manipulates his lover Floria Tosca by taking advantage of his jealousy. He uses an odious blackmail which obliges the young woman to make a sacrifice to which she can not consent. Art and love, politics and conspiracies: this essential repertoire knows how to keep everyone in the world on the alert for more than a century. Superstar Anna Netrebko takes on the role of the jealous singer Tosca in majestic settings that faithfully reconstructs the grandeur of the scene of the action masterpiece of master Puccini. Composer Giacomo Puccini Production Sir David McVicar Conductor Bertrand de Billy Cast Anna Netrebko Michael Volle Brian Jagde (soprano) (baryton) (tenor) (Tosca) (Scarpia) (Cavaradossi) Live from New York Saturday 9th May 6.25pm Geatano Donizetti Elizabeth, Queen of England, is in love with Leicester, appointed by her ambassador to the King of France. • William Kentridge Brings 'Wozzeck' Into the Trenches
William Kentridge Brings ‘Wozzeck’ Into the Trenches The artist’s production of Berg’s brutal opera, updated to World War I, has come to the Metropolitan Opera. By Jason Farago (December 26, 2019) ”Credit...Devin Yalkin for The New York Times Three years ago, on a trip to Johannesburg, I had the chance to watch the artist William Kentridge working on a new production of Alban Berg’s knifelike opera “Wozzeck.” With a troupe of South African performers, Mr. Kentridge blocked out scenes from this bleak tale of a soldier driven to madness and murder — whose setting he was updating to the years around World War I, when it was written, through the hand-drawn animations and low-tech costumes that Metropolitan Opera audiences have seen in his stagings of Berg’s “Lulu” and Shostakovich’s “The Nose.” Some of what I saw in Mr. Kentridge’s studio has survived in “Wozzeck,” which opens at the Met on Friday. But he often works on multiple projects at once, and much of the material instead ended up in “The Head and the Load,” a historical pageant about the impact of World War I in Africa, which New York audiences saw last year at the Park Avenue Armory. Mr. Kentridge’s “Wozzeck” premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 2017. Zachary Woolfe of The New York Times called it “his most elegant and powerful operatic treatment yet.” At the Met, the Swedish baritone Peter Mattei will sing the title role for the first time; Elza van den Heever, like Mr. Kentridge from Johannesburg, plays his common-law wife, Marie; and Yannick Nézet- Séguin, the company’s music director, will conduct.

In 1891, Theodore Thomas took the stage to conduct the Orchestra’s first concert nearly 125 years ago. As the Orchestra looks back at its distinguished history this season, its programs reflect the CSO’s heritage and legacy, with most weeks including at least one work that was given its world or U.S. premiere by the CSO. Many of these premieres featured the composer as conductor or soloist, and have since taken their place as cornerstones of the standard orchestral repertoire. CSO Concerts Muti leads a wide range of programs and events between September 17–October 3, 2015, beginning with the season’s first subscription concert at Symphony Center on Thursday, September 17, at 8 p.m., which includes Liszt’s symphonic poem, From the Cradle to the Grave, Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.

He turned opera in a new direction by conceiving the whole score on the basis of a compelling dramatic conception involving naturalistic effects, orchestration, and musical form, thereby pointing the way for such opera composers as Rossini, Wagner, Berlioz, and Meyerbeer. As a grand opera it was ahead of its time and was full of spectacular scenes showing a Vestal Virgin’s forbidden love for a Roman general; it made Spontini the most important composer of the Napoleonic period. Here directing his first opera, the French stage director Éric Lacascade focuses on a highly topical subject: ‘More than passionate love, what is at stake in this opera is the liberation of a woman who frees herself from the power of religious authority.’ COMPOSER & WORK Born in 1774 in Italy, Gaspare Spontini (1774-1851) imposed a new style to French music, mixing his Neapolitan inspiration to the genre of French lyric tragedy and thus creating what may be termed as Grand Historic Opera. The Italian composer, who became French in 1817, began a brilliant career in Rome and Venice after his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Naples.
