“THANK YOU” FROM THE BRUINS

CLAIRE WINTER Women’s Soccer • Redshirt Senior Communication Studies Major • Lafayette, CA “I am extraordinarily fortunate to be a student-athlete at the greatest university in the world. The lessons I have learned during my years at UCLA are timeless and valuable. Your generosity may perhaps be one of the greatest lessons I have learned so far. It continues to positively transform the lives of student- athletes. Your contributions immediately benefit the program, but the greater lesson is one of generosity and how your example will challenge the next generations of UCLA student-athletes to do great things and give back. Thank you for your gifts and thank you for the lesson of giving back. All of us will forever be grateful and honor your lesson.”

UCLA ATHLETICS’ COMPLIANCE CORNER NCAA RULES REMINDER: DEFINITION OF A BOOSTER A number of UCLA teams report this month for preseason practice, and August is a flurry of activity for many student-athletes as they return to campus. Team meetings are held during which important NCAA rules are reviewed, and every student-athlete signs a statement confirming their understanding of these rules as a condition of their eligibility for competition. In that spirit, now is a good time to review the definition of a booster for all of you, our loyal donors, supporters and fans. Under NCAA rules, you are considered a “representative of UCLA athletics interests” (commonly known as a “booster”) if you: • Made a financial donation of any amount to UCLA Athletics or to any sport support group • Made a gift-in-kind of goods or services to UCLA Athletics • Provided NCAA-permissible benefits (e.g., summer job or pre-approved occasional meal) to UCLA student-athletes • Provided information to UCLA coaches about noteworthy recruits (but no impermissible contacts please) • Hold or have ever held UCLA season tickets in any sport • Assisted in promoting UCLA Athletics in any way By definition, Wooden Athletic Fund members are boosters. Once identified as a booster, that status remains forever and NCAA rules will always apply to you. Why is it so important boosters be educated? When a booster commits a rules violation, the school may be held responsible by the NCAA and can penalize the institution as well as the prospective or current student-athlete. We encourage you to “ask before acting” and contact the Compliance Oce with any questions so that we can prevent any actions that might place UCLA Athletics, student-athletes, coaches or fans in jeopardy. Feel free to contact Dan Goldberg, Assistant Athletic Director Compliance at (310) 794-8813 or [email protected]. Follow UCLA Compliance on Twitter at @UCLACompliance
