Our spacious grounds create a scenic setting for your learning experience Notre Dame High School, a Roman Catholic secondary level college preparatory school, has educated more than 11,000 young men since its founding in 1954. Located in Niles, Illinois, on 28 wooded acres, Notre Dame currently enrolls over 830 students. Our students come from Chicago and 29 different suburban townships. Notre Dame’s approach to education is holistic. We educate and form minds, bodies and souls.

Notre Dame partners with parents and families in challenging our students with our college prep program. Individual attention is provided to each young man throughout his formative years at Notre Dame. Our goal is to prepare him not only for college, but for life. Our students grow in wisdom as well as knowledge: in faith, in values, and in morality. Notre Dame’s partnership with our families begins with their sons’ first day of high school, and it lasts for their lifetimes. Notre Dame High School: 1954-2008 “On September 1, 1954, Notre Dame High School was born. Samuel Cardinal Stritch, the Catholic Archbishop of Chicago, and priests from the Congregation of Holy Cross from South Bend, Indiana, broke ground in Niles, Illinois. Priests and Brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross expanded their educational ministry in the Archdiocese considerably with this new endeavor. Holy Trinity High School in Chicago and Holy Cross High School in River Grove were also secondary schools sponsored by the Holy Cross Priests and Brothers.” mission Under the patronage of Mary, the Mother of God, Notre Dame High School is a college preparatory school committed to educating young men within a Christ- centered and family-based community. We cherish and respect each individual. Our values are Gospel based. In our Catholic tradition, and faithful to the spirit of our Holy Cross founders, we endeavor to inspire life-long learners, committed to scholarship, to personal excellence, and to social justice. ownership Ownership of Notre Dame High School now rests in an independent two-tiered Board comprised of Notre Dame alumni, parents, educators and Catholic leaders from the larger community of Chicago. The top tier, the Executive Board, partners with representatives of the Archdiocese of Chicago to ensure the Catholicity of our school. The Executive Board appoints members to the Governance Board. This second-tiered assembly oversees the daily operations of the school. Our character, charism, and heritage, formed by the Congregation of Holy Cross, remain appreciated and strong. life prep Notre Dame partners with each student and his family to provide a challenging college preparatory academic program. Our goal is to prepare each Notre Dame man for academic success in college. We are equally committed to preparing each student in his spiritual life, in his moral life, and in his behavioral life. personal growth plan The Personal Growth Plan is developing under the direction of the Counseling Center, the Principal’s Office, and the President’s Office. Notre Dame will help each student to create an individual plan for his high school career. His development at Notre Dame, maximizing his unique qualities, utilizing his special interests and needs, and building on his particular values and goals, will be measured and evaluated regularly. At the beginning of his first year, each student and his family will meet with counselors to formulate his Plan, thereby establishing his unique path to success. faith & service As part of our Christian Service Learning Program, students attend monthly Mass, study the Catholic faith in the classroom, experience the sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation, make an annual retreat and serve the local community.

By the time they graduate, Notre Dame students will have given a total of at least 115 hours in programs serving their school, parish and community.

retreats and kairos Notre Dame’s four-year retreat program is designed to help our students develop a mature faith that can augment a solid academic foundation with a real desire to deepen one’s faith and relationship with God. During Kairos, the culminating 4-day faith experience for our senior Dons, young men discover how God is present and working in their lives, especially among family, friends and others with whom they interact on a daily basis. They will learn the importance of sharing their gifts with others and becoming leaders in their faith. President father smyth leading by example:

The Executive Board of Notre Dame High School named Father John P. Smyth the school’s first president under its new governance structure on March 1, 2007. A Chicago native, Father Smyth is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary. Widely regarded as one of the top fundraisers in the Chicagoland area, Fr. Smyth has also dedicated much of his life to the education of the area’s youth. thoughts from father smyth:

“With blessings from Our Lady, we will guide our student body by enlightening their minds and enhancing their spirits so that when they walk out the doors into the world upon graduation, they will possess the qualities for success in the path of their choice with a full appreciation of not only what they have received and achieved at Notre Dame High School, but also what they may return to the community and society as a whole.” Father Smyth at the University of Notre Dame is a college preparatory high school. The instructional program has distinct levels of challenge: Honors, College Prep Core, and the Brother Andre Program (for students needing additional learning assistance). Through our capital campaign, “Past, Present, Promise”, we can make that happen.

Daniel Burnham the great Chicago architect and planner said, “Make no small plans. They have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and in work...”

With families in our communities showing renewed interest in the value of single-gender education and appreciation for the quality programs we provide, we are more comitted than ever to our mission of preparing young men for a lifetime of success. Here are some of the big plans that we are making over the next few years to ensure that the Notre Dame tradition has the same relevance today as it did when we started over fifty years ago:

1 Add Our Lady’s Grotto to the campus, providing a place where students can focus on their faith and celebrate their spirituality.

2 Enhance our educational space, giving our students the best possible environment to grow and learn in.

3 Construct a new field house, providing much needed athletic accommodations that align with our students’ needs.

4 Renovate our stadium, ensuring safe and ample playing conditions for our students.

5 Grow our endowment, providing financial aid for students in need and supporting our educational mission.
