Baird, Ph.D. Hinton‘s theology of pain posits that an individual‘s suffering contributes to God‘s redemptive work in the world. This dissertation explores Hinton‘s theological appropriation of pain in four ways. First, we examine Hinton‘s life and writings to establish his personal interest about pain. Factors that contribute to Hinton‘s theological interest were the death of his brother, his sojourn in Whitechapel, his mental health, and his practice and skepticism of medicine. Second, we examine Hinton‘s redemptive nexus of suffering, beneficence, and deification in light of the Jewish and Christian traditions. While our exploration shows that the biblical tradition interweaves suffering, beneficence and deification, we also see that the biblical tradition adds elements that Hinton‘s treatment misses. The tradition shows that society also has an obligation to those who suffer. Suffering and wellbeing are ultimately social issues that require social, not simply iv personal, solutions. The serendipitous nature of suffering in the Hebrew bible fleshes out what in Hinton is simply an argument. In light of the serendipitous suffering in the Hebrew tradition, we examined participants in medical trials and the advancement of medicine as possible instances to bolster Hinton‘s theological nexus. The New Testament suggests that Hinton is too unidirectional in his understanding of the nexus of suffering, beneficence and deification. The New Testament places identification with Christ preeminently ahead of the suffering of the individual. Third, we explore the relevance of Hinton‘s thinking about pain in his contemporary setting in light of the philosophical, theological, and scientific developments in the nineteenth century. Hinton‘s metaphysical speculations bridge theology to Darwin‘s theory of evolution. Darwin was unable to connect Christianity to his thinking about natural selection because of his acceptance of ideas within natural theology. Hinton‘s metaphysical conceptualization allows him to reject natural theology while embracing the Darwinian revolution from a Christian perspective. Finally, we explore modern pain theories and the literature on the role of religious coping on pain and illness to see if Hinton‘s theology of pain remains intelligible. The modern medical and social science literature sustains Hinton‘s basic premise that theological outlook can influence one‘s tolerance of pain. v DEDICATION In memory of my mother, Edna Hansen, and my wife‘s mother, Shirley Johnson, they reflected God‘s love in life and suffering. vi ACKNOWLEDGEMENT A basic insight in this dissertation is that suffering is not merely a personal phenomenon; suffering is a social issue that necessitates a societal response. We will summarize some of the characteristics of the Hinton family that contributed to James‘ personality and views. We will also briefly summarize James‘ life and writings to offer a sort of Sitz im Leben for his thinking about pain. Then we will focus our attention on four episodes or situations from his life that significantly contributed to his understanding of pain in a personal way: his brother‘s death, his experience of Whitechapel, his own mental health, and the state of medicine in the mid nineteenth century. These factors directly contributed to Hinton‘s understanding of pain. By exploring his family, life and experiences

That is why Jesus was willing to die in our place. He loved us. God’s law for the people was plain. Read Deuteronomy 6:5. But God’s people, and all people, have broken the law. We have loved other things more than we love God. That is sin. Jesus’ purpose for coming to earth was to save us from our sin. (Matt. 1:21) Jesus came to die to show God’s love to us (Rom. 5:7-8) so that whoever believes in Him might not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) Jesus came to die so that we would be forgiven. (Eph. 1:7) Jesus came to die to bring us to God. (1 Pet. 3:18) Jesus died on the cross to satisfy the wrath of God toward sin. Jesus’ resurrection proved that God was satisfied with Jesus’ sacrifice. If Jesus had died but not been raised up, He would have been like other military leaders who died without a throne. (Acts 5:33-37) But Jesus conquered death, just as He said He would. (John 2:19-21) Jesus’ resurrection gives us hope for our resurrection. (Rom. 6:5) And Romans 8:11 says that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead will raise our bodies to life.

Hsieh Ph.D. Candidate The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary While many biblical-theological scholars claim that Matthew 5:5 is a straight- forward expansion of the OT land promises to now encompass the whole earth, the original text of Matthew 5:5 (κληρονομήσουσιν τὴν γῆν) makes no clear indication that it is referring to the “earth” rather than to the “land” of Israel. It is possible to interpret Matthew 5:5 as referring to an inheritance of the land of Israel, but un- fortunately, such an interpretive possibility has been obscured by English transla- tions and ruled out by supersessionist theological assumptions regarding Israel’s future. Based on careful word study and sensitivity to the Jewish-focused literary- historical context of Matthew’s Gospel, this article will argue that Matthew 5:5 re- affirms a future Jewish inheritance of the land of Israel, an inheritance that does not exclude Gentiles but complements and fits within the worldwide inheritance for all of God’s people. * * * * * The promised land of the Abrahamic covenant is such a major theme in the OT and Second Temple Jewish literature, but seems to fade in the New Testament. Using the spatial and literary density of London as their subject, these new urban writings juxtapose the present with the past, presenting a cityscape of heavy fragmentation, elusiveness as well as dynamics. Of these, Iain Sinclair’s work stands out as “our greatest guide to London,” and “the most distinctive voice among an array of lyricists-cum-satirists of fin-de-siècle British life.” Sinclair has made a vocation of excavating the hidden, the lost or erased spatial configurations of London’s cultural marginalia, in order to construct an oppositional space on the material and everyday level against the official historical and spatial discourse of Thatcherite corporatism. Sinclair practices a method of psychogeography, where the city and subject collapse into one, and the city becomes a psychological entity and a shifting character. Walking the streets of London has in particular become a recurring theme and metaphor. This paper examines two of his most famous works, his breakthrough novel White Chappell, Scarlet Tracings (1987) and Lights Out for the Territory (1997), a non-fictional prose work on London. It focuses first on the spatiality of London’s East End, which is the primary territory of Sinclair’s psychogeography, and then on his mode of spatial investigation, that of the walker/stalker.

    CHAPTER FIVE Romantic selfhood in the comics of Alan Moore Writers of alternative comics are characteristically an eccentric bunch, members of a culture that sets itself apart from producers and consumers of mainstream comics and other media. Nevertheless, Alan Moore is often considered to be weirder than most. Even before he declared himself to be a magician and worshipper of the Roman snake-god Glycon, his physical appearance, outspoken views and unorthodox, sometimes volatile relationships made him the subject of a reasonable amount of gossip in the comics world.1 This eccentricity is important because it is impossible to separate Moore’s representations of selfhood from his unorthodox beliefs about human perception, history, magic and contemporary culture. Moore has been nothing if not prolific, and the bibliography provided by the Alan Moore Fansite lists several hundred titles.2 What I am seeking to demonstrate here is that Moore’s later works, particularly From Hell (1991-6, collected 1999), The Birth Caul (1995) and Lost Girls (1991-2006) are the products of a neo-Romantic sensibility which developed in parallel with his identity as a magician. I will begin with a brief examination of an earlier comic, Swamp Thing, in which traces of his later preoccupations can be seen, but which differs in several significant ways from his 1990s work. I will then discuss those comics written during and after Moore’s magical “mid-life crisis” (as he put it),3 as it is in these works that Moore most clearly privileges the visionary and the non-rational, and attempts to describe a lost, intuitive, spontaneous selfhood uncontained by social convention.

    EXTRA-BIBLICAL REFERENCES TO THE CRUCIFIXION DARKNESS By Randy Roper There was a discussion going on amongst secular historians and intellectuals in antiquity about a strange darkness that took place in 33 A.D. which lasted for 3 hours -- from the 6th hour until the 9th hour (i.e., from noon until 3 p.m.) at which time it became so dark that the stars came out. The only explanation they could come up with is that it must have been an eclipse of the sun. Note that the Greek historian Phlegon (below) says it took place in the fourth year of the 202nd Olympiad, which was 33 A.D. – which can be verified by clicking on the link following Phlegon's quote in red below. (The Olympics began in 776 B.C., and by counting every fourth year you come to the 202 nd Olympiad, and the fourth year of same is 33 A.D.) Most historical chronologies date Jesus’ crucifixion in the Spring (at Passover) in 33 A.D. The Gospels state that the sun was darkened from the 6th to the 9th hour while Jesus was being crucified. (Moreover, an earthquake took place which split rocks open and the veil of the temple was torn in two). This darkness was prophesied by the prophet Amos in approximately 700 B.C., who said it would occur just prior to God’s judgment on Israel for all the sins they committed: “And it shall come to pass in that day,” says the Lord GOD ,“That I will make the sun go down at noon, And I will darken the earth in broad daylight; I will turn your feasts into mourning, And all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on every waist, And baldness on every head; I will make it like mourning for an only son, And its end like a bitter day” (Amos 8: 9-10).

Waddington Summary Astronomical calculations have been used to reconstruct the Jewish calendar in the first century AD and to date a lunar eclipse that biblical and other references suggest followed the Crucifixion. The evidence points to Friday 3 April AD 33 as the date of the Crucifixion. This was Nisan 14 in the official Jewish calendar, thus Christ died at precisely the time when the Passover lambs were slain. The date 3 April AD 33 is consistent with the evidence for the start of Jesus’ ministry, with the gospel reference to 46 years to build the temple and with the symbolism of Christ as our Passover lamb. The mention of a solar eclipse at the Crucifixion in some texts of Luke is discussed and explained. A new chronology of the life of Christ is suggested. I. Introduction The date of the Crucifixion has been debated for many years, but there has been no agreement on the year nor the day. However, astronomy can be used to reconstruct the Jewish calendar in the first century AD, and hence to rule out many possibilities. For example, an AD 36 Crucifixion, recently revived by Lane Fox,1 appears to be calendrically impossible as will be shown later in this paper. Furthermore, astronomy can be used to identify the most probable date of the Crucifixion. In this paper, which is based on earlier work of the authors,2 we use two approaches to dating the Crucifixion: first, a process of elimination, showing that every year but one is incompatible with the available evidence; second, lunar eclipse evidence which positively identifies a particular date.

    Raniero Cantalamessa Come, Creator Spirit – meditations on the Veni Creator Liturgical Press, Collegeville, Minnesota, 2003 Alison Morgan June 2005 Introduction Veni creator is a C9th hymn by Rabanus Maurus. His sources were the same as ours: scriptures plus philosophy (to tell us about God), history (to tell us about Jesus), and experience (individuals and the collective Church, which we call Tradition). This last is the work of the Holy Spirit. Cantalamessa’s book explores the work of the Holy Spirit through the verses of the hymn. 1. Spirit, come! The name ‘Spirit’ is just a translation; his real name is ruach. It was first translated as pneuma, the name given to him in the NT. The name ruach, like all Hebrew names, says something about the origin/function of the one named. We cannot understand the HS unless we understand his name. Ruach means: The space/air between heaven and earth (why we have ended up saying ‘in the HS) Wind/breath. Pneuma and Spirit retain these linked meanings (inspire, respire). Ghost derives from gast – breath. Wind and breath are more than symbols of the HS; symbol and reality share the same name. Wherever we read ‘wind’ in scripture, people also understood ‘spirit’. The wind gave its name to the HS – in human experience we do not know spiritual reality first, but material reality, and only then what is spiritual (1 Cor 15.46). ‘so it is that we start our study of the Spirit in the open air’. Other symbols will be water, fire, oil, light. The Bible teaches us about spiritual realities by using as symbols the ordinary things found in nature; God wrote 2 books, creation (made of things and elements in themselves mute) and the Bible (made up of letters and words); these books explain one another.
