The song was both produced and written by Jermaine Dupri and contained a sample of The Isley Brothers 1983 hit “Between the Sheets”, for which the brothers and Chris Jasper were given songwriting credits. The single was released in the summer of 1994 and quickly became a hit, reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the R&B charts (held from the top spot by Janet Jackson’s “Any Time, Any Place”) and number one on Hot Rap Singles. To date, “Funkdafied” remains Da Brat’s most successful single and is her only single to have been certified platinum for shipments exceeding one million copies, earning the certification on August 16, 1994. By the end of the year, it had sold 800,000 copies. It reached No. 37 on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1994 as one of the year’s most successful singles. (Wikipedia) Funkdafied. Purchase and download this album in a wide variety of formats depending on your needs. Buy the album Starting at $11.99. The first album by a female rapper ever to sell one million copies, Funkdafied is a promising debut effort that finds da Brat still solidifying her style. She's a very good rapper without a strong identity of her own yet, and despite her own obvious intensity, she seems infatuated with the offhanded drawl of Snoop Doggy Dogg on much of the album. She's not just influenced by him, but cops recognizable inflections, phrasing, and vocal riffs, and producer Jermaine Dupri sometimes supports her with Dr. Dre-style G-funk tracks, most obviously on the single "Fa All Y'All." But even at its most derivative, Funkdafied has spirit. Repeatedly announcing, "I ain't no muthaf*ckin' joke," da Brat paints herself as a cussin', weed-smokin' badass bitch who can hang with the boys and beat them at their own game. Cuts like "Da Shit Ya Can't Fuc Wit," "Fire It Up," and "Give It 2 You" effectively establish her tough-talking persona, and the smash title cut is a breezy, laid-back party jam. On quite a few tracks, da Brat augments her Snoop fixation by referencing lines from '80s classics, almost as though she feels compelled to prove she knows her history; she can also rely a little too heavily on her catch phrase, "Brat-tat-tat-tat." But even if she isn't quite there yet, da Brat knows who she wants to be, and she has the talent and production to make the journey entertaining. © Steve Huey /TiVo..

  • Black Women Queering the Mic: Missy Elliott Disturbing the Boundaries of Racialized Sexuality and Gender
Journal of Homosexuality, 58:775–792, 2011 Copyright © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC ISSN: 0091-8369 print/1540-3602 online DOI: 10.1080/00918369.2011.581921 Black Women Queering the Mic: Missy Elliott Disturbing the Boundaries of Racialized Sexuality and Gender NIKKI LANE, PhD Candidate Department of Anthropology, American University, Washington, DC, USA Though there were and always have been djs, dancers, graffiti artists, and rappers who were Black women, they are placed on the periphery of hip-hop culture; their voices, along with “gay rap- pers” and “white rappers” devalued and their contribution to the global rise of hip-hop either forgotten or eschewed. This article is an attempt to articulate the existence of Black women who work outside of the paradigms of the “silence, secrecy, and a partially self-chosen invisibility” that Evelynn Hammonds describes. At the center of this article lies an attempt to locate a new configura- tion and expression of desire and sexuality, opening a door, wide open, to gain a different view of Black women, their sexuality, their expression of it, and the complexities that arise when they attempt to express it in hip hop nation language. KEYWORDS Black women, hip-hop, linguistic anthropology, queer, rap INTRODUCTION Cecilia Cutler (2003) writes that “there is a powerful discourse within hip-hop that privileges the black body and the black urban street experi- ence” (p. 212). What is important to understand, however, is that there is a particular gendered Black body that is privileged in hip hop. The body is of the urban Black heterosexual male, and his set of experiences shape not only the discourse, but also the language of hip hop itself.

  • A Look in Our Lives: Mary J. Blige's My Life, the 4991 Series, and Black Women's Narratives As Working Cultural Memories - Ada New … ISSUE NO
2/25/2021 A Look In Our Lives: Mary J. Blige's My Life, The 4991 Series, and Black Women's Narratives as Working Cultural Memories - Ada New … ISSUE NO. 6 A Look In Our Lives: Mary J. Blige’s My Life, The 4991 Series, and Black Women’s Narratives as Working Cultural Memories Regina N. Bradley The initial inspiration for my critical dialogue project The 4991 Series stemmed from fleeting moments of nostalgic recognition that some of my favorite albums and films were turning twenty years old. The string of pivotal moments from 1994’s year in black music paralleled my own coming of age story growing up black in the 1990s. While select anniversaries have been discussed at length – i.e. Nas’ Illmatic album – little attention focuses on staple moments from 1994 produced by or featuring black women. TLC’s CrazySexyCool, Mary J. Blige’s My Life, Aaliyah’s Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number, Da Brat’s Funkdafied, and Brandy’s Brandy are major milestones in popular music that update the trajectory of black women’s narratives in American culture. Thus, the premise of The 4991 Series is to highlight these albums as entry points for discussing late 20th and 21st century race, gender, and identity politics. A Breakdown of The 4991 Series Production Process Aesthetic Influences The 4991 Series exists as a crux of public space, race, and popular scholarship. Perhaps most unique about this project is the intentionally unorthodox approach to scholarship and archive – the loose, conversational style of the interview/dialogue format is meant to reflect the unorthodox if not messy experiences of being black and female in a deemed postracial era – post everything? – society.

  • So So Defvirgin's First Hip-Hop Release
So So DefVirgin's First Hip-Hop Release Written by Robert ID1243 Friday, 22 April 2005 02:45 - Inspiration from the streets and the booming beat laboratories of Atlanta, Miami, New Orleans and all points in between, the upcoming So So Def/Virgin collection "JERMAINE DUPRI PRESENTS... YOUNG, FLY & FLASHY VOL. 1" promises to inject a heavy dose of Southern flavor into the national hip-hop & rap scene at its release on July 19. Virgin Records Urban Music President Jermaine Dupri noted that the album continues a decade of Southern-based talent development that has yielded both crossover hits and music for the hardcore. Says super-producer Dupri, who has helmed current smash hits for superstar artists like Mariah Carey and Usher: "''Young, Fly & Flashy'' is the definition of myself and the lifestyle of So So Def. This collection is an introduction of the new, up-and-coming So So Def artists: Young Capone, T. Waters and The Kid Slim, among others." The first single and video release from the collection is the club banger "Gotta Getcha" from Dupri himself. Concurrently, the streets will continue to bubble with two additional tracks: the serious-as-a-heart-attack battle rhyme "I''m Hot" by Young Capone with West Coast rapper Daz and T-Roc guesting; and "Throw''d Off," by T. Waters. The song "I Think They Like Me," by Franchise featuring So So Def kingpin Dupri, has already been leaked pre-release and is currently heating up mixtapes and underground rap radio mix shows from coast to coast. Dupri also heads up "10 Toes," with help from rap artists J-Kwon, Stat Quo, Slim and Daz.
