We are particularly thrilled that Tommy Smith, Scotland’s most prominent jazz artist and a leading and prolific educator is such an integral part of this project. The Euroradio Jazz Orchestra is a unique initiative which supports jazz at the highest level. Each player here tonight has been nominated to represent their country by their national broadcaster. We hope that they will enjoy both a profound musical experience and also make lasting friendships as they build on their professional careers. The concert at RCS Glasgow on 17th November will be recorded, and made available for broadcast by EBU radio organizations from 25th November onwards. Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi- Cultural Tonality By Carlo Estolano Commentaries for the PhD folio of compositions University of York Music December 2017 2 3 Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi-Cultural Tonality Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of a PhD degree in Music at The University of York, December 2018 by Carlo Estolano. Abstract This folio is conceived to propose and demonstrate music realisation of original compositions throughout the employment of elements of mainly two distinct sources: a selection from the wide palette of Brazilian folk styles that have improvisation as a strong element, which is internationally acknowledged as Brazilian Jazz; and its intersections with a certain style of European Jazz represented by artists notable by their keenness to combine elements from distinct musical genres with their Classical background, such as Ralph Towner, Jan Garbarek, John Abercrombie, Eberhard Weber, Kenny Wheeler, Terje Rypdal, Keith Jarrett to name a few. Both Brazilian and European approaches to Jazz seem to share processes of appropriation of foreign musical languages, as well as utilising characteristic features of their own traditions. Another common ground is their relation with some elements and procedures of classical music. The methodology to accomplish an organized collection of musical material was to divide them in five major influences, part of them by composers and part by genres notable by having evolved through absorbing elements from distinct cultural sources. In five projects, fifteen original compositions are provided along with their recorded and/or filmed performances and commentaries about the compositional aspects, concerningthe style or composer focused on.

Jazz Collection: Ralph Towner, mit Marcel Ege und David Sautter Dienstag, 3. März 2015, 21.00 - 22.00 Uhr Samstag, 7. März 2015, 22.00 - 24.00 Uhr (Zweitsendung) Orchesterwerke, Kammer- und Filmmusik – das sieht nicht gerade wie der Werkkatalog eines Jazzgitarristen aus. Trotzdem ist Ralph Towner (*1940) genau das: einer der innovativsten und vielseitigsten Jazzgitarristen seiner Generation. Zwei Dutzend Aufnahmen mit der World-Music-Formation Oregon und nochmals so viele Einspielungen als Solo-Künstler für das Label ECM belegen das eindrücklich. Auf der klassischen Konzertgitarre oder der zwölfsaitigen Stahlsaitengitarre hat Ralph Towner einen ganz eigenen, sofort identifizierbaren Sound geschaffen. Daneben setzt er auch Klavier, Trompete und weitere Instrumente höchst virtuos ein. Als klassisch ausgebildeter Gitarrist weiss er sehr genau, wie er für Ensembles mit Gitarre(n) schreiben kann, um den grösstmöglichen Effekt zu erzielen. Auch das Schweizer EOS Gitarrenquartett hat ihn mit der Komposition von Musik beauftragt. Zwei der EOS-Gitarristen, David Sautter und Marcel Ege, sind Gäste von Peter Bürli. For his follow-up — Rising Grace — the Austrian guitarist has convened a very special quintet, adding jazz luminary Brad Mehldau on piano and the out- standing young trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire to the subtly virtuosic Grenadie r/Blade rhythm section. Muthspiel moves between electric guitar and classi - cally tinged acoustic six-string, his playing by turns grooving (“Boogaloo”) and enchanting (“Rising Grace”). The lyrical flights of Akinmusire’s trumpet and the probing improvisations of Mehldau run through Muthspiel’s rich set of compositions like golden threads, the tracks including a warm tribute to a late, great ECM artist, Kenny Wheeler (“Den Wheeler, Den Kenny”). ECM Manu Katché Neighbourhood Tomasz Stanko: trumpet; Jan Garbarek: saxophones; Marcin Wasilewski: piano; Slawomir Kurkiewicz: double-bass; Manu Katché: drums, percussion ECM 1896 CD 6024 986 9815 (0) Release: September 26, 2005 Manu Katché’s first leader date for ECM finds him fronting a remarkable band, assembled by producer Manfred Eicher, which brings the French-African drummer together with Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek and Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko. Two of Stanko’s gifted young associates, pianist Marcin Wasilewski and bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, complete an ensemble which plays Manu’s music with enormous assurance, as if they’ve been playing together for years. Which, indeed, some of them have. As so often with this record label, a “first encounter” trails a network of associations and interwoven histories.... Katché loomed into public consciousness as a pop drummer in the mid-1980s, his loping, floating beat eagerly embraced by musicians from Peter Gabriel to Sting to Joni Mitchell. In 1988, Manfred Eicher heard him playing on Robbie Robertson’s untitled Geffen album and felt that his pulses and patterns, simultaneously modern and tribal, could easily be adapted to improvised contexts. In fact, Katché had already given the matter some thought. It turned out he’d been an ECM follower since his teenage years, when he was studying percussion at the Paris Conservatory, and listening to the label’s albums – particularly those of Jan Garbarek, Keith Jarrett and John Abercrombie - had helped him shape some of his own ideas concerning jazz and ensemble playing and the relationship of sound and silence. Invited to participate in ECM’s 20th anniversary concerts in Paris in 1989, Katché jumped at the opportunity, playing first in a trio with Jan Garbarek and Indian violinist Shankar in a concert at La Cigale (the venue to which Katché returns for the launch concert for “Neighbourhood” on October 4th).
