  • R&B Legend Natalie Cole Joins Rock Legend Gregg Allman, Merck
NEWS RELEASE R&B Legend Natalie Cole Joins Rock Legend Gregg Allman, Merck and The American Liver Foundation to Turn Up the Volume Around Hep C 7/26/2011 Cole to Perform with The Allman Brothers Band at the Tune In to Hep C Benet Concert Tomorrow on the Eve of World Hepatitis Day Merck (NYSE: MRK) (known as MSD outside the United States and Canada) today announced that GRAMMY® winner Natalie Cole is adding her voice to the company's public health campaign, Tune In to Hep C, with the American Liver Foundation (ALF) and rock legend Gregg Allman. The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness of chronic hepatitis C virus infection. Cole will join Allman onstage at a benet concert featuring The Allman Brothers Band and other special guests in New York tomorrow, July 27, the eve of World Hepatitis Day. This cause is personal to Cole, who was diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C during a routine blood test in 2008. It was then that she realized she'd been living with the virus for more than 25 years - nearly half of her life. Cole's experience is not uncommon. In fact, chronic hepatitis C is often referred to as the silent disease because – for many people – it can be in the body for decades without any symptoms. Cole is joining the campaign to encourage others with chronic hepatitis C to put aside fear and stigma and take action. "One thing is for sure – there's a stigma surrounding hepatitis C because it's associated with IV drug use.

Scott Amendola: Drummer/Composer/Bandleader/Educator “Amendola’s music is consistently engaging, both emotionally and intellectually, the product of a fertile and inventive musical imagination.” Los Angeles Times “If Scott Amendola didn't exist, the San Francisco music scene would have to invent him.” Derk Richardson, San Francisco Bay Guardian “Amendola has complete mastery of every piece of his drumset and the ability to create a plethora of sounds using sticks, brushes, mallets, and even his hands.”Steven Raphael, Modern Drummer “...drummer/signal-treater Scott Amendola is both a tyrant of heavy rhythm and an electric-haired antenna for outworldly messages (not a standard combination).” Greg Burk, LA Weekly For Scott Amendola, the drum kit isn’t so much an instrument as a musical portal. As an ambitious composer, savvy bandleader, electronics explorer, first-call accompanist and capaciously creative foil for some of the world’s most inventive musicians, Amendola applies his wide-ranging rhythmic virtuosity to a vast array of settings. His closest musical associates include guitarists Nels Cline, Jeff Parker, Charlie Hunter, Hammond B-3 organist Wil Blades, violinists Jenny Scheinman and Regina Carter, saxophonists Larry Ochs and Phillip Greenlief, and clarinetist Ben Goldberg, players who have each forged a singular path within and beyond the realm of jazz. While rooted in the San Francisco Bay Area scene, Amendola has woven a dense and far-reaching web of bandstand relationships that tie him to influential artists in jazz, blues, rock and new music. A potent creative catalyst, the Berkeley-based drummer is the nexus for a disparate community of musicians stretching from Los Angeles and Seattle to Chicago and New York.

  • Ick! Eek! Encore! Creators of 'Bug Opera' Hope Debut Connects with Children and Parents
Ick! Eek! Encore! Creators of 'Bug Opera' hope debut connects with children and parents By Sarah M. Taylor, Globe Correspondent | November 16, 2006 The plump green Caterpillar looks out and asks, "Why change?" A know-it-all Paper Wasp explains that after metamorphosis, Caterpillar will turn into a moth. Paper Wasp strolls around his library, looking for a picture of a Luna Moth to show him. Caterpillar lets out a large burp; he ate the paper. After being shooed out, and after a lively twilight quartet with three other bugs, Caterpillar reaches a birch tree as night descends. He whips out a telescope and sings, "There is still so much to see," while a chorus of insects makes clicking and swishing noises, eventually fading into the darkness. This is the world of "The Bug Opera," a work by composer Geoffrey Hudson and librettist Alisa Pearson, where imagination flies free.
