March 8, 2021 Next SCA DEMS CLUB MEETING: Wednesday, March 17, 2021, 5:00 pm Speakers: Kate Marshall, NV Lieutenant Governor Mark Bettencourt, Project Director, Nevada Coalition Against the Death Penalty Topic: Death Penalty ZOOM invites will arrive via an Alert email 2 days before we meet The Death Penalty is a very complicated and emotional issue, and a topic in the current Legislative Session. It is a major area of concern for Kate Marshall and Mark Bettencourt. So we hope you will join us for an informative meeting. And if you have never heard Kate Marshall speak, you are in for a treat! Speaker Information: Kate Marshall is our current Lieutenant Governor, sworn in to this office on January 7, 2019. She is a member of Governor Steve Sisolak’s Cabinet and serves as President of the State Senate. She is also the Chair of the Commission on Tourism, Vice-Chair of the State Board of Transportation, a member of the Board of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, and a member of the Executive Budget Audit Committee. Serving as Lieutenant Governor is only the latest chapter in Kate’s history of elected service to Nevada. In 2006 and again in 2010 she was elected Nevada’s State Treasurer. Her many accomplishments as Treasurer include eliminating no-bid contracts and off-the-book accounts, reduced spending to make government more efficient, and identifying innovative methods to increase economic development for Nevada Businesses. In the difficult economic downturn in 2009 Kate managed Nevada’s investments so well they earned money every single quarter. One of her proudest achievements as Treasurer was creating the College Kick Start program. In the first statewide program of its kind, Kate partnered with local banks to open and fund college savings account for every kindergartner in public school in Nevada - and she did it at no expense to taxpayers. Mark Bettencourt is Project Director for the Nevada Coalition Against the Death Penalty. He is an experienced non-profit director with a demonstrated history of working in the political organization industry. He is skilled in issue advocacy, environmental politics, intersectional community organizing, and has a deep passion to improve racial justice and equity, working within the field of organizing and non-profit management. He is a strong community and social services professional with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree focused in History from University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
