Selman University of Tennessee, Knoxville 1 Acknowledgement Many thanks to my advisor, Dr. Anthony Nownes, for his advice and encouragement throughout this project. His expertise was invaluable, and I could not have completed this thesis without his constant feedback and support. I also owe special thanks to Dr. Michelle Brown, who first introduced me to punitive politics and reformative justice in her Sociology 456: Punishment and Society course. It is because of this class that I found a new perspective on social accountability and healing, inspiring me to dig deeper into how sex offender registrations took shape in the United States and how they may have gone too far. -
A Numbing Cold That Added to the Sting of Losing One of Our Own
CPO FAMILY Spring 2011 A Publication of The CPO Foundation Vol. 21, No. 1 ON FEBRUARY 4, 2011 in Rosendale, New York the temperature was a “mere” 6 degrees -- a numbing cold that added to the sting of losing one of our own. On that day a service was held for Officer Casimiro “ Maxi “ Pomales of Eastern New York Correctional Facility. Maxi was killed in an automobile accident while transporting an inmate to a medical appointment. Over 400 uniformed staff from around the State braved that cold morning to pay their respects and say good-bye. After the continued on page 5 Spring11_CPOF.v2.indd 1 4/26/11 2:07 PM In Memory of Corrections Offi cer Gary Chapin EOW: November 15, 2010 by Wendy Baur, CPO Foundation Pennsylvania Representative I received a call last October from CPOF Volunteer Dana Arington at SCI Albion. She had little information initially other than that a horrible assault had taken place in Crawford County. Little did I know when I received “that call” that it would be a true “life-changer.” I made the journey to Crawford County and contacted Warden Tim Lewis to fi nd out the details about the assault and to offer our support. Unfortunately, the assault ultimately would turn out to be a line-of-duty death. For me, what was a life-changing call turned into a “life-chang- ing meeting.” The senseless assault/murder of County Corrections Offi cer Chapin is a grave reminder of the violent offenders you as Corrections Offi cers are surrounded by every day. -

One Voice United National Medal of Honor
One Voice United National Medal of Honor 2020 One Voice United National Medal of Honor Candlelight Vigil May 14, 2021 7:00 PM Vigil Video Link https://fb.me/e/I0yVr4Q2 The National Pandemic touched everyone, causing pain and heartache far and wide. We as a nation can never fully express the gratitude owed to frontline workers who gave so much throughout the pandemic. Some of those who were tragically lost were the brave men and women who work every day in one of America’s most difficult and dangerous jobs. The Correctional Officers and other front-line staff who have made the ultimate sacrifice have gone largely unrecognized. Over the past 15 months we have suffered the loss of over 260 Correctional Officers, Supervisors and Essential Personnel to COVID-19 Line of Duty Deaths. We have done our best to verify those losses and memorialize the names of those lost. Please accept our apologies if we missed anyone or mispronounce any of their names during the Vigil. The first list of nine names represents a cross section of the agency’s we work with. The remaining presentations are listed by state in alphabetical order. Thank you to all the volunteers who worked extremely hard to gather the information and make this Vigil a reality.
