When does the spirit of charity, helping and community begin to show in people? For Kaitlin, it happened before she graduated from kindergarten. Kaitlin asked guests attending her kindergarten graduation party to bring of food and money to help support the New Hampshire Food Bank. Kaitlin’s effort raised enough to provide 515 meals. Kaitlin’s mother contacted the NH Food Bank to find out what types of food were needed. June, when Kaitlin graduated, is Canned Vegetable Month. Vegetables are an important staple of a nutritious diet. Canned vegetables provide people with a shelf- stable, long-lasting healthy food that is available year-round. The NH Food Bank encourages people to donate certain kinds of food during different times of the year, such as peanut butter and jelly in August when children are getting ready to go back to school and canned soups in February when the weather is usually at its coldest. Kaitlin’s graduation party was not only great fun, but a great success. It is one of the many ways you can help the NH Food Bank support the over 400 agencies they partner with throughout the state aid the approximately 1 in 9 individuals who are food insecure. The guests not only brought a cornucopia of canned vegetables, they donated money and some of Kaitlin’s friends even volunteered to hold food drives for their parties. “I’m so proud of Kaitlin. She learned how important the New Hampshire Food Bank is to our state and she thought of a way to help,” Kaitlin’s mother said. “I thought she might miss not receiving any gifts, but I never saw her happier than she was when we delivered all the food she collected for the NH Food Bank.” About one in nine people in New Hampshire are food insecure and your support helps change their lives every day. And, as Kaitlin showed, together we can help to solve hunger at any age. 50% of the food distributed by partner agencies is from the New Hampshire Food Bank..

400 Partner Agencies The New Hampshire Food Bank serves over 400 partner agencies including: • food pantries • homeless shelters • soup kitchens • children’s programs • senior centers In turn, these agencies provide hunger relief to those suffering from food insecurity throughout the state.

22 | Catholic Charities New Hampshire Dear Friends: As I watched the residents, their families and donors come together this summer during the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Mount Carmel Healing Garden, it struck me that I was seeing the best of Catholic Charities New Hampshire and what your support means. We touch the lives of 1 in 13 people in New Hampshire though a variety of ways, including the Healing Garden project that is a place for our residents to fi nd peace and comfort. Without you, we could not help a young mother like Tonya to make a healthy and positive life for her daughter. Without you, it wouldn’t be possible to provide the support John needed to be a valued and productive member of his community. And without you, we could not inspire a new generation of young people like Kaitlin who help feed the thousands of people around New Hampshire struggling to put food on the table every day. We have shared the stories of Tonya, John and Kaitlin in this year’s Annual Report. They are stories of faith, compassion and moving lives forward. They are stories that are possible because of you. God bless,

Thomas Blonski President & CEO Dear Friends: As I write this introductory note for Catholic Charities New Hampshire’s Annual Report, I am compelled to comment on the number of donors, the number of clients served, the dollars spent on each program. I am also drawn towards the stories that CCNH’s staff has gathered to share with us, stories that demonstrate in a very particular way the results of their work: In these pages you’ll meet Tonya, a fi rst-time mother who was unprepared for bringing a new life into the world. She received help from OUR PLACE and our other services, to strengthen her family. You’ll meet John, a man who lacked a family support system and who was unable to work due to a birth defect. Illness forced him to seek aid from our Parish and Community Services, to help him build his self-suffi ciency. You will also see the newly-renovated Healing Garden at the Mt. Carmel Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and hear fi rst-hand how it improves the lives of the community of patients and residents who live there. As always, I thank you for generous response to those in need, and for all you do in service to our Lord and His people here in New Hampshire.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Peter A. Libasci Bishop of Manchester
